It turns out the American Sniper only had one silver star.

You know, having just one is an honorable thing :-)

When I was issued my DD-214 at the retirement ceremony, I was pissed. I went over it with a clerk not two-weeks before and it was correct. What I got at retirement was something fabricated a few days later. I'm sure the clerk lost the original.

Anyway, I flew 14 years, and nowhere on there does it have my wings. So, I was awarded all these Air Medals, and had no wings?? That doesn't make sense.

So I asked for a correction. oops, sorry, you will have to contact the VA. I did, it was a circle jerk. Finally I gave up. Who cares.

Maybe I'll write a book and people will say I'm a fraud because my DD-214 is f'd-up by some tit-less WAF...

Is that one plant Tovara virginianum? How long has it been in your garden? Mine became invasive, dug some of it out, and now I try to remember to remove the tiny red flowers after bloom. I have mine growing in a hosta bed (love your hosta, what's the vaviety?) as well, and keep a close eye on it.

Heh. That's some weak discrepency they've managed to dig up. One set of Navy records says one thing, another set of Navy records says another.

As for the picture, that's some masterful gardening there.

For some good laughs go to the NYT and read some comments to the State Dept IG report.

That's something that was already there. Neither of us planted it. It just stays in one place so it's not invasive. We like the little v on the leaf, resonating with the hosta.

We don't remember the name of the hosta, but we both like the paintbrush-stroke of the design.

Now that his garden is growing, here's a new project for Meade:

The Collings Foundation has their B-17 and a P-51 at Moffett NAS right now, so for the last 5 days I've been treated to the sight and sound of them in the air every couple hours.

Andrew Napolitano on the O'Reilly show said the latest revelations on Hillary!'s e-mail server is that when it went down, the State Dept. offered her one of their Blackberrys and the use of their system, and she turned the offer down due to concern for the FOIA acts. He says that shows intent to evade the laws, which is much more serious than negligence.
I think it also shows that the State Dept. knew about her system all along despite all the denials they have issued.

My brother and I think we are strange, because we can tell when a P-51 has a Merlin engine, or an Allison. We rib each other, and the people sitting next to us think we're two old coots...

As a kid we couldn't wait to go to the B-17 Gas Station in Gladstone, Oregon. Back in the 60's it had a ladder up to it (it was above the pumps), and we could operate the gun turret, and crawl around from tail gun to nose. You had to be careful crossing the bomb bay as it was just a beam, wide enough for your foot. If you fell, you might end up scraped and bloody.

My dad loved it too, as there was a bar across the street and he could drink for 4 hours and not have to worry about us.

O'Reilly says it is all too complicated for him to understand.
I don't understand what is so complicated.

Megyn Kelly started out with overwrought language about "angry protests" in Albuquerque last night and today in California. Wrong on both counts. These ruckuses were both planned and organized mayhem by identified groups with corporate names and have nothing to do with "protests" - angry or otherwise.

The MSM is reporting it as "Trump protestors . . ." See what they are doing there? It is all Trump's fault for running for office and making these people so "angry" they just cannot help themselves.

During the last pass of the P51 I found myself explaining the history of the Allison and RR engines in the P51 to my 90;year old mother in law. Sadly I do not know the difference in sound from personal experience.

My garden could use more water. I am unsatisfied with today's meager shower. Also, I thought I had gotten rid of the Spikenard in my garden, but apparently I missed a root, or tuber, or whatever they're called, because it's emerging once more.

It's unusual to end May with a string of 80+-degree days like we're about to. (We might have 10 in a row! Today was #4). But my metabolism has adjusted to the heat -- caloric expenditure has plummeted so I gain weight, just like every early Summer.

What is the flower? It is too early for Hostas to flower.

Isn't it that fake phlox lookalike that's invasive? It's not really called fake phlox, I'm just blanking on the name right now. It's all over my garden. Pretty, and fragrant, but invasive.

@MadisonMan.. you can have some of our rain.. it has been wet for the last 3-4 weeks. Tired of it.

Tent caterpillar and the spray to kill them (RIP) have left my garden looking lost.

BTW, I have the same Hostas in my garden. I like them. Low maintenance and flowers look good but they can grow really big if left to their own devices year after year.

Meade and Professor A,

My Dearest Husband was elected to be a Delegate to the GOP National Convention in Cleveland. Not really excited about Cleveland but we plan to travel throughout the Great Lakes area afterwards, including a stop in Madison to visit nephew who is a Resident at UW Madison Hospital. He doesn't know much about Madison - do either of you have a recommendation for a hotel or "inn" that is out of the ordinary? (That is, something other than Holiday Inn - not that there is anything wrong with HI).

If we take a hike near Lake Mendota (sp?) we'll keep our eyes out for Meade and Zeus.

One quarter of an inch. I'm going to need to start watering, which seriously slows down progress on garden building.

Very interesting guy. He was passed over for general after Gulf War I by a corrupt wing commander who was later cashiered for flying his girlfriend around in Marine Corps planes.

Several years ago, he sold his company that he founded after retirement for $23 million.

He preceded Ollie North as Marine Crops Aide in the White House and also had Fawn Hall as his secretary.

I talked to Ollie about him at a meeting.

"Leatherneck" had a profile about him last most,

Hey, maybe that's why John F. Kerry still hasn't released his DD-214; maybe he is still trying to get his record sorted out.

Isn't this the same argument they have been using to refuse to testify when subpoenaed? Over and over they say they can't testify because their testimony might be distorted, as if they have no recourse to correct the record. I think they believe that they are above the law in a deep way, not that it's just a position they are taking on a particular case. They believe that conservatives are illegitimate critics, and expect judges to agree with this as a matter of law.

Wow. These are the people you kiddies want to see in power! What happens when they do something YOU don't like, Democrats? How will YOU hold them responsible? What happens if a Republican president has rulings like this as precedent?

I know, you never thought that far, amiright?

"any relation to Hanna Reitsch (the Me 163 test pilot)? "

I don't think so. His father was a German soldier being held in a Russian POW camp who, the day after Manfred's mother visited him, died suddenly. She got her two kids out of east Germany to Minnesota where he went to college and joined the Marine Corps.

He had over 600 sorties in Vietnam and another 60 while group commander in Gulf War I.

The "Leatherneck" bio is wild but it is behind a paywall.

How much will you spend? :)

Hotel Red is not ordinary, and has a nice bar, and it's close to Mickeys Dairy Bar for breakfast. Or you can book a room at Union South on Campus, or the Union, on Lake Mendota, but sometimes those fill up for things like Weddings in the summer. The Best Western Inntowner has a good location close to the Hospital, but it's really just a gussied Holiday Inn. There's also a B&B down at the end of Monroe Street that's all Green and Environmentally friendly, the Arbor House Inn.

Dan Gurney could stand with his back to a Can-Am track and tell you which cars were passing by.

I remember going to the 1964 Indy 500. I was a sophomore in high school and had a seat by myself on the inside of the track down from the finish line. Got to my seat and was surrounded by adults who had no interest in me, so I ended up talking to a 10 year old boy who was in the seat in front of me. He knew more about Indy racing than anyone I ever met in my life. During the race, I remember one car going by and he said, "That car will be out in 3 laps - the engine is going." And sure enough, in 3 laps it was gone. That was the year of the transition from the front engine Offy roadsters to the rear engine cars. He was fiercely partisan for any of the roadsters, and hated the high pitched whine of the V-8s. After talking for a while, I found out he was Tony Bettenhausen Jr. His dad had been killed a couple of years earlier at Indy along the main stretch right in front of where we were sitting. Early in the race, there was a huge flaming crash in the 4th turn that stopped the race. After about an hour delay, they announced that Eddie Sachs had been killed. Tony had been down by the fence by the pits just before the race started talking to Sachs, who he told me was his Godfather. After the announcement, he sat down, cried for a while, and then stayed for the rest of the race. In later years, he would race Indy cars along with two of his brothers. One brother was badly burned in a racing wreck, another brother lost an arm in a different accident, and Tony Jr. ended up dying in a plane crash while on a racing related trip after he retired from driving and was managing the Provimi Veal Indy car team. Open wheel racing took a tremendous toll on that family.
