Opinions voiced about voices — the shouting woman (Hillary) and the quiet man (Ben Carson).

On "State of the Nation" this morning, Jake Tapper, interviewing Bernie Sanders, played a video clip of Hillary Clinton getting off a great feminist sound bite: "I've been told to stop, and I quote, 'shouting about gun violence.' Well, first of all, I'm not shouting. It's just when women talk some people think we're shouting."
TAPPER: She's basically calling you a sexist... You're the one she's quoting, Senator Sanders. She is suggesting in public that you have a problem with women speaking out.

SANDERS: Well, you know, all that I can say is I am very proud of my record on women's issues. I certainly do not have a problem with women speaking out. And I think what the secretary is doing there is taking words and misapplying them. What I was saying is if we are going make some progress on dealing with these horrific massacres that we're seeing, is that people have got to stop all over this country talking to each other. It's not Hillary Clinton. You have some people who are shouting at other people all across this country. You know that. This nation is divided on this issue. ...What I was talking about, clearly, across this country you've got people shouting at each other.
On "Meet the Press" this morning, Chuck Todd, interviewing Ben Carson, played a video clip of Donald Trump mocking: "We have a breaking story: Donald Trump has fallen to second place behind Ben Carson. We informed Ben, but he was sleeping." Asked to respond, Carson said:
DR. BEN CARSON: You know, everybody has their own personality. And if he'd like to do that, that's fine. That's not who I am. And I don't get into the mud pit. And I'm not going to be talking about people. I will tell you in terms of energy I'm not sure that there's anybody else running who's spent 18 or 20 hours intently operating on somebody.

CHUCK TODD: Do you think that people mistaken your soft-spokenness with a lack of energy?

DR. BEN CARSON: I think so. I have plenty of energy. But, you know, I am soft-spoken. I do have a tendency to be relaxed. I wasn't always like that. There was a time when I was, you know, very volatile.... As a teenager, I would go after people with rocks, and bricks, and baseball bats, and hammers. And, of course, many people know the story when I was 14 and I tried to stab someone. And, you know, fortunately, you know, my life has been changed. And I'm a very different person now.

Wow, so Carson decided to use his knife was niceness instead of evil.

Good show.

I wonder how many idiots are going to vote for - or against - Hillary! because she wears a dress?

Carson is insane-he will win the Iowa caucus and then fall.

New Hampshire is a very different electorate-libertarian and not religious.

Thank God for New England-the most fab part of the country.

tits.

With Rodham, it's always womens' issues first. I hope she keeps it up.

Now there's a slogan that will win over the undecideds and independents.

I've read Archie comics with more gravitas than Chuck Todd.

This quote from Ben Carson reminds me of a lyric from Dylan’s “Please Mrs. Henry,” which -- for those not thoroughly versed in The Basement Tapes -- is half Dylan song, half bunch of stuff you made up with your friends when you were wasted: “I’m a thousand years old/I’m a generous bomb/I’m T-boned and punctured/I’ve been known to be calm . . .”

"a great feminist sound bite: "I've been told to stop, and I quote, 'shouting about gun violence.' Well, first of all, I'm not shouting. It's just when women talk some people think we're shouting.""

Great feminist soundbite = half century of whining.

In this case, no one tells her to stop "shouting" about gun violence, opponents just want her to stop lying.

The claim that she has been told to stop shouting about gun violence is a double lie.

I'd guess the "ayes" have it - with ease.

"Shouting," Hillary? What do you suppose Bernie Sanders has been doing for the last couple of weeks? Speaking quietly and rationally?

Look, if you've any real grounds for going after Sanders on this, then do it. Otherwise, leave it be. And be aware, as I've said before, that for every "shout" (or "shriek," or "shrillness") there is a "bellow," or an "erupted," or a "laid out," or what have you. "Shout" is actually gender-neutral, itself. "Shrillness" and "Shriek," not so much.

Hillary's answer to criticism is, "It's because I'm a woman and they are sexist!"

Carson's answer to criticism, thank the Lord, is, "I'm not going to go into that mud pit. I'll stand on who I am as a person." Nothing about racism, or being black.

Perfect.

No, most people do not, at this point.

Again: Trump got Carson to say what Trump wanted to be said.

Good progressive Democrats will NEVER vote for a black conservative. And too many "independents" and yes, Republicans, even the "moderate" ones will be unable or unwilling to look beyond the example of Barack Obama and say "let's take that chance again." Barack Obama and the Democrats have burned the bridge for another black President in our lifetimes...

I like Carson but don;t know if I will vote for him. Whoever the GOP nominee is I will vote for but I would prefer it not be Trump.

Carson is a very intelligent man who has a lot of experience with stress handled well. That is what neurosurgery is about.

I worry a little about who his advisers would be but we know about Obama and it could not be worse. Hillary is the worst person ever to be in reach of the presidency since Aaron Burr.

Not at all. They've burned the bridge for another black Democrat President. Not that I think Carson has a chance in Hell for reasons that have nothing to do with race.

That's not a slogan. That is a statement of fact. Hillary ought to be less concerned about the too stupid to vote and rather concern herself with the voir dire. 2017 Hillary! For The Big House.

Do 7th Day Adventists drink alcohol? 'Cause I'd love to tip a few with Dr. Ben. He seems like a cool guy. (I don't mean "cool" like Prof. Althouse thought Obama was; I mean for real.)

Now just do a mind experiment with me. Think about sitting down for a chat with Dr. Ben, and then think about sitting down for a chat with The Donald. Imagine what those two experiences would be like.

I don't say that's the best way to pick a president, but it might be a good way to pick between these two prospects.

Sanders doesn't want to win. He is just spending all of the money people gave him and trying to make sure his disenchanted followers go to Hillary.

The Godfather - I think you summed up why Carson is outpolling Trump in Iowa, where politics is up-front and personal. Carson would be massively more interesting.

It's all too obvious that Hillary's constant playing of the "woman" card in this election--in contrast with her more muted use of it in 2008--that this has nothing to do with personal conviction but simply what her political handlers have told her will work. Are enough women dumb enough to fall for it?

And of course Hillary is just not a good enough politician to use the woman card wisely--she's here shoehorning it in out of left field. Someone saying we shouldn't be "shouting about gun control" might just have nothing at all to do with women! But way to clumsily pull that back in.

The only question left is will the GOP be more awful than Hillary at campaigning. We are really gonig to see the dregs next year.

It's why I'm hoping Trump wins.

Want to neuter Hillary? Find somebody who will both piss her off AND not apologize.

Apologizing has become the biggest vice we have in this country. Apologizing for the most inane bullshit and it suddenly makes the inane bullshit legitimate in some people's eyes.

We need people to stop apologizing. Period.

Sounds like more assertion that any criticism at all of Hillary! is/must be de-facto evidence of sexism and therefore can only be evidence of deficiencies in the critic, and can nothing at all to do with any possible deficiencies in Hillary! herself.

Pretty much. Voters are going to have to ask whether they can stomach another presidency where no criticism of the president is legitimate, as it is really latent bigotry rearing its ugly head. Not a healthy thing in a democracy.

It would be really nice if people woke up to this danger and rejected it.

Reread that sentence and ask yourself what part of what you just wrote would suggest the general public knows he tried to stab someone? I follow political news, and the MTP interview was the first time I heard it.

"A candidate whose biggest argument for being elected is having a vagina is a candidate that should be laughed out of primaries, not embraced."

It's things like this--Hillary's clumsy use of the gender card--that makes me wonder if even the hapless GOP can beat her. To the extent that Obama used the race card, he was smart enough to either leave it to his surrogates or be subtle enough to not overplay it and offend enough whites.

I wonder if enough women will be turned off by such hamhandedness.

Hillary will win the votes of females, because of The View and Oprah and feminism.

Hillary will win the election because no Republican is able to stand before the public and openly denounce her corruption, incompetence, lies, or even her & her husband's misdeeds running a charity.

Hillary will then make Obama look Reaganesque in foreign policy and like FDR on the domestic side. People will forget Carter existed as the extent of her failures spread worldwide. I will be amazed if we get out of 4 years of Hillary without a nuke exploding somewhere important, killing millions. God help us all.
