Bill Clinton says, and if only Hillary could speak so aptly and succinctly, she'd have the presidency clinched by now. Since we're talking about China state dinners this morning, here are Bill and Hillary at the China state dinner in 1997:
ADDED: As I was working to complete this post my way, Meade — who'd sent me the link to the article — goaded me to look at the last line — which I'd not yet read — because he thought I'd have the same association with it that he had. The last line — which I'm only reading after I copy it here — is:
But when Mr. Zakaria asked if the questions about Mrs. Clinton’s emails were a “Republican plot,” Mr. Clinton resisted the term.Meade is out walking the dog, so I can't check if my answer is right, but I know it's right:
“No, I’m not going there, because that’s what the — it’s not a — a plot makes it sound like it’s a secret,” he said. “I think that — that there are lots of people who wanted there to be a race for different reasons. And they thought the only way they could make it a race was a full-scale frontal assault on her. And so this email thing became the biggest story in the world.”
"This whole thing is the biggest fairy tale I've ever seen."

Bill is just a much better liar. Everybody knows that.
We need the President to be a good liar. We need him/her to lie FOR us some of the time. We need a liar we can trust to be for us. Gotta have both. It's not easy to find that! Especially when you're talking about getting a good liar. That liar could lie about being for us. That's what some people think we got in Obama. What a conundrum!
If the Rule of Law had any meaning left in this country both Clintons would be indicted right now. The both of them for the million dollar bribery scheme they ran (see the book "Clinton Cash") and Hillary for her mishandling of top secret information with her unsecure private server.
The Clintons are the greatest criminals in the history of America only because they have never been indicted.
Hillary Clinton must be defeated.
Carthage must be destroyed.
Ann:
My favorite Bob Kerry line, "Bill Clinton is an unusually good liar. Unusually good."
Hmm, I would've guessed "vast, right-wing conspiracy."
Oh, C'mon. Obama is behind the Hillary hate.
The GOP couldn't get Lois Lerner fired, but they can keep Hillary from the getting the D presidential nomination?
"Oh my!" sez the libtard media person "who could hate Hillary so much? It must be the Republicans!"
Jesus Christ on a surfboard.
"We need the President to be a good liar."
I don't agree. Remember Eisenhower and how furious he was (and he could be furious) about the U2 flight before the Summit with Kruschchev. He did not want to be seen lying about that even though he had previously advocated "Open Skies" which was what the U2 was about. The concept of a president being "a good liar" is a modern one and not a good precedent. Once he/she starts lying, where does it stop ?
The administration has been telling her for months that they have her e-mails and they will be produced if she does not find a way to bow out gracefully.
But Hillary! has a reputation for deafness.
"He did not want to be seen lying..."
That's the definition of BAD lying. Seen.
And I disagree with the assertion that Bill Clinton is an unusually great liar. That's the perspective after he was caught lying. He's known as a big liar. The greatest liar is someone we don't see as a liar. Who is that?
Here's the real conspiracy:
http://www.redstate.com/diary/6755mm/2015/09/25/myra-adams-clinton-foundation-collusion-irs/
Hillary enlisted Steven Spielberg to help her appear more likable.
This is the new kind of primary where the White House "mangles up" Hillary on behalf of Biden. Also known as "court intrigue".
"That's the definition of BAD lying. Seen."
When did Eisenhower lie about anything as president ? We know Roosevelt did but Truman didn't as far as I know. This is a recent thing and I don't like it.
I know the left is all about Bush lying but I don't know of a real instance, Roosevelt sort of made it OK but I don't think it is.
Not saying something is not the same. Kennedy was a slimeball personally but I don't know of an instance of him lying as president. Do you ?
Kennedy may have lied about the Bay of Pigs invasion. I'd have to look back at the record. It was a disaster but I'm not sure publicly lied about it.
Not Bering seen is one definition of a good liar but not the only one. With Clinton, for instance. I'd say he is a good liar because we know he is one but in any individual circumstance it's hard to detect him lying because he's so comfortable with it
Billy Jeff is a great liar because everyone knows he is lying, but thinks his lying is just wonderful.
My nominee for a being a great liar, but not seen as a liar is Thomas Jefferson.
The greatest liar is someone we don't see as a liar. Who is that?
Er - how would we know? If I understand your definition correctly, Professor, a great liar is someone who is never caught.
"We need a liar we can trust to be for us."
Having grown up in government-related circles, the idea that the government needs to dissemble – and maybe a little bit more – doesn't strike me as bad; diplomacy is "lying for one's country" and all that.
There was a time, though, that I thought of Hillary: she's devious and conniving but she will work in my interest. Now I think: she's devious and conniving and seems to be targeting people like me.
Of course it was the Repubs who made Hillary make the incredibly stupid and incredibly dangerous decision to use a private, insecure email system as Sec of State.
I guess that was just one of the "Hard Choices" she got wrong.
Well Hillary got canned from her first legal job because she was a liar; and some habits, once started, are hard to break.
And despite Obama's snide, "You're likeable enough Hillary" shot in 2008, he really doesn't like her. So to some extent this drip drip drip of revelations from the gubmint about Hillary's e-mail escapades are like a cat toying with a mouse. (Nice to think of Hillary as a little rat, isn't it?)
Will Obama and his minions pounce? I dunno. Obama is concerned enough about his "legacy" [he sees it as a plus--realists see it as a catastrophe] that he might choose to help Hillary get into the White House. Better a Dem in the Oval Office who will (to use LBJ's terms) be pissing out, rather than a disappointed Dem slate outside denouncing Obama's terrible legacy which "cost them the White House".
But it may not matter; Hillary carries enough baggage without the e-mail scandal to make her election difficult--despite the fact that the 52% or so of voters who are female will vote with what's below their belt rather than what's above their shoulders. Our host may not like that last crack, but facts are facts--especially where a Democrat female candidate is concerned.
"The greatest liar is someone we don't see as a liar. Who is that?"
That's interesting. It would need to be someone who we never suspected until we found out, probably many years later, that were lying all along. George H.W. Bush got voted out for "Read my lips....." He had been the head of the CIA (must of done a lot of lying but I think he was considered to be very straight and honest) and Chinese Ambassador, I think. Other important posts. When he raised taxes we were totally unforgiving, maybe because we were horrified that he actually lied. No one is horrified by Clinton lies.
I'm sure there are better examples.
"that was just one of the "Hard Choices" she got wrong."
The White House star has written that the Clintons were the most paranoid people ever to reach the presidency.
I think it is a little like being Sonny Corleone. You know that everyone is out to get you and that they have good reason to do so.
Althouse is working on her, "Why I am voting for Hillary" post. Don't be rubes, folks. Althouse will vote for the bitch, it's professional courtesy.
Sonny had a 9 inch dick. Bubba has a 5 inch and it's crooked.
I'm guessing that my life experiences must be substantially dissimilar from the Bill Clinton detractors who nevertheless admire his mastery of the dark arts.
I simply do not see anything admirable about his style. To me he comes off as a patent sleazeball phony.
Maybe he reminds me of someone I disliked in high school or something.
I really don't know.
Presidents ought to use deception as a weapon in foreign affairs. National security is at stake and he should lie when appropriate to defeat our enemies and advance our interests.
But in domestic political affairs, a president should not lie. Trust matters. It would be nice to believe that the head of the US government is an honest dealer and has respect for his opponents and the voters.
"National security is at stake and he should lie when appropriate to defeat our enemies and advance our interests."
I disagree. I think presidents have people who do things he/she should not talk about. Lying is a way to make our friends wonder what our real policies are. Of course, after Obama, we may have no fiends left.
Reagan, for example, probably authorized a great CIA operation that caused a huge explosion in the Soviet gas pipeline he openly opposed.
Obama blabbed about SEAL Team Six and may have gotten them killed.
Althouse wrote if only Hillary could speak so aptly and succinctly, she'd have the presidency clinched by now.
Well she can't so don't let your little hypothetical stand as indicative of any national mood. Your thought is subjective.
" if only Hillary could speak so aptly and succinctly, "
She has been liar and crook all along. She was the "bagman" in Arkansas and has been the money grubber for those two since the beginning. She is sort of the Wallace Warfield Simpson to the Prince of Wales in American history. Neither was an admirable person.
Bill Clinton is taking this stuff personally. It's his weak spot and why he lost to Barack, who keeps roiling him. Obama doesn't want Hillary to be President and Bill is helpless. Let it go, dude.
I anxiously await Bills lies about the trips to Fantasy Island with the pedophile and Dershowitz.
here are Bill and Hillary at the China state dinner
I forget, how much did the Clintons get from the Chinese while selling us out?
They only lie for themselves - to hell with everyone else.
Obama went far beyond blabbing about SEAL Team 6. He helped Hollywood make the campaign movie about the event. Was it Smiley or SlowJoe that gave-up the doctor to Pock-e-ston? So very charming.
Bill Clinton says, and if only Hillary could speak so aptly and succinctly, she'd have the presidency clinched by now.
"Bimbo eruptions"
"a willful suspension of disbelief"
"At this point, what difference does it make"
I think the statements above are apt, and succinct. They speak volumes. She is contemptuous, incompetent, and way past her pull-date.
O is the greatest. Sure, the cynical commenters on this blog have his number. But he is not "seen" as a liar.
You have to be utterly stone-cold about it, completely self-possessed at all times, ruthlessly determined in pursuit of your goals. The Prince was a squish by comparison.
We need the President to be a good liar.
Althouse is channeling a cartoon that showed Obama and Bill Clinton playing golf and Obama saying to Clinton that Hillary is not as good a liar as they.
The greatest liar is someone we don't see as a liar. Who is that?
Oh, oh, this is so easy. You didn't see that but a good percentage, not enough to stop but who saw it for it is.
So typical of the Clintons to never apologize, show remorse or admit wrongdoing--no, it's always the fault of shadowy Republicans.
Anyone who doesn't see how dangerous that way of thinking is for a democracy deserves what we're about to get.
Sorry, but I seem to have missed where Bill Clinton refuted all the charges about Hillary's use of a private email server. It seems to me that he ignored all the issues and just asserted that "they" are out to get Hillary. That's what Hillary's been saying, but now we should believe it because Bill says it? Because he has such great credibility?
Give me a break.
Sociopaths agree with you Ann. Lying is good.
Some Clinton: "...or what to do with the epidemic of prescription drugs and heroin out in America."
Bill Clinton says, and if only Hillary could speak so aptly and succinctly,
He's not just succinct:
Alarm About a 'Heroin Epidemic' Skyrockets As Heroin Use Falls
I feel bad for Hillary. I don't think she should have started this campaign. The guys in the WH more than the GoP are part of this email hype up to screw her(of course, BC cannot say that). In the end, Obama and his cronies are more crooks and better at hoodwinking than the Clintons.
The President does not need to be a good liar. The President needs to be surrounded by people who tell the President the truth, while potentially called upon to lie on the President's behalf, I would submit.
The lies this President's press secretary is asked to tell are so obviously lies that one cannot take him seriously, despite his last name. The lies this President has told are obviously lies. His lies were obviously lies before he took office. But some wished to be fooled.
I want a president who is honest.
Gotta love professionals. Bill makes ordinary BSers look like the dull amateurs they are.
"The greatest liar is someone we don't see as a liar. Who is that?"
We can rule out Ryan Braun.
Bill Clinton is merely repeating the Clinton party line. The polls show that (1) 98% of the electorate have already made up their minds about her, and (2) 60% of that 98% would wade five miles through chest-deep snow in below zero temperatures to vote against her. If the Democrats are sane they will not nominate her. If she is sane she won't run if nominated.
Is it important for a president to be able to lie? It depends on what he (or she, President Carly!) is lying about. Should JFK gone on TV and told the people that he expected every American city within an arc from New Orleans on the southwest up to Baltimore or New York on the northeast to be turned into a radioactive hole in the ground if Khrushchev didn't back down? I think not! But there are things that a president shouldn't lie about:
(1) Things that strain credulity past the breaking point. For instance Hillary saying that all her official Emails had been turned over, when there was a five month gap where apparently she conducted no official business via Email. In the 21st century is that even remotely possible?
(2) Things that leave you badly positioned when the truth comes out. As it always does.
"We need the President to be a good liar."
No wonder you voted for the One. Democrats admire lying above all else, especially when the liar gets away with it. You haved outed yourself again.
100 % chance is next president. Only way she can be brought down is by Obama. But Debra at dnc is clearly running interference to keep for her and I have my money on Debra in this one instance because no way Obama can survive another year without white women
Hey Big Mike! I don't know how old you are, but I remember Pres Kennedy did tell the radius of the Russian "Defensive" missiles were. You're entitled to your opinion but not entitled to your own facts
PS Big Mike! I agree with your other points.
Lawyers (and especially the Clintons) are quite good at delaying, denying and deferring. She violated the law.
https://www.law.cornell.edu/uscode/text/18/1924
She's toast, bring on Bernie or Joe.
"... out in America."
What an odd turn of phrase.
In addition to all the lies mentioned above, I recall (yes I honked if HE was guilty)that she was fired from a Legal Staff position of the Democrat side of the Watergate Committee! The reason being "untrustworthy". Amazing how some things never change!
@Mazo, I was in high school back then, well outside the radius. It was a long time ago and my memory may be faulty.
@Unknown, how do you plan to keep 60% of the electorate at home?
"The other party don't want to run against her."
BS ---The GOP would LOVE to run against Hillary!! Ann Coulte has been saying so everywhere:
From Breitbart.com:
Ann Coulter declared, “”I wish Fox News would go a little easier on Hillary Clinton. She’s the one we want to run against” on “Lou Dobbs Tonight” on the Fox Business Network. Coulter argued, “I wish Fox News would go a little easier on Hillary Clinton. She’s the one we want to run against. Could you guys just back off? Because I feel like I’m living through this, I feel like this is déjà vu again. We used to say, ‘Oh, the next president isn’t going to be a guy named Barack Hussein Obama.’ Our next president could be Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) if you people keep this up.”
http://www.breitbart.com/video/2015/08/12/coulter-go-a-little-easier-on-hillary-because-shes-the-one-we-want-to-run-against/
My nomination for the biggest liar(s) are the mullahs of IRAQ. Even the Quran allows lying to the infidels. "peaceful" purposes, my a$$
Hey Big Mike! I did too nestled here in the Big WI
clint said...
"... out in America."
"What an odd turn of phrase."
But directly applicable. DC and America are two different places now. DC does nothing now that is in common interest with the people "out in America."
Don't speak ill of the dead.
Question, Professor!
"We need the President to be a good liar. We need him/her to lie FOR us some of the time"
Does that mean to lie to coverup own wrong doing? I see the Clinton's entire career is lying to "CYA"; NOT to protect US!!
"that is catnip to the people who get bored talking about what’s your position on student loan relief or dealing with the shortage of mental health care, or what to do with the epidemic of prescription drugs and heroin out in America.”
Ah..trying to change the subject to anything she has no fingerprints on.
“This is just something that has been a regular feature of all of our presidential campaigns, except in 2008 for unique reasons,”
That's raaaacist.
The mullahs are not lying; they have said right along they are not going to be bound by any agreements, and Death to America!
"That's the definition of BAD lying. Seen."
Like promised here
Per George Costanza, it isn't a lie if you believe it's true.
So Obama believed you would keep your doctor and save $2500 per year.
Also understanding human nature involves people have one standard for themselves and another for everyone else.
So rather than "lie," the person deceiving will deceive themselves such that any consideration given to any statements of misfact would be owed to the situational disadvantages inherited because of prior bad choices and worse choices made by Richard Mellon Scaife and Newt Gingrich and the Kochs and George Damn W. Bush and Rush Limbaugh.
And Sarah Palin.
Presidents who lie deserve the same fate as lawyers who lie.
What's sadder:
Needing Bill Clinton to vouch for your honesty and trusworthiness
People actually putting stock in Bill Clinton's profession of his wife's honesty and trustworthiness?
That's the spin their puttinmg on it: All the accusations or possible accusaions against Hillary are attacks by political opponents.
Hillary was on Meet the Press today.
She laughs - a more natural and milder laugh than before, indicating she doesn't take any of that seriously, and we shouldn't either.
And she says the accusations in the 1990s were proven false, and has the line that this was disregarded by the voters when she was elected to the senate in the year 2000.
She didn't personally decide what were work related e-mails. Yes she made a bad joke one time.
The thought never entered her mind that a private e-mail account would be a way to make things more difficult for Congressional investigators or for Freedom of Information Act Requests. And besides 90% of the e-mails were in the State Dep't poseession (disregarding the fact that they weren't indexed and wouldn't be supplied by a subpoena - you'd have to search all e-mail of other people to find hers) and she says they supplied so much e-mail they didn't need to that the State Department returned 1,200 e-mails.
Mail concerning the Clinton Foundation couldn't go to her for legal/ehthical reasons. It went to other people at the State Department
Q? Isn't the story you told about all secretaries of statew being asked inaccurate?
A. The State Department discovered a problem - it was somewhat gobbledegooky and not an answer to the point.
a five month gap where apparently she conducted no official business via Email.
A 5 month gap where there is nothing that was sent to the Gowdy Committee which requested e-mails dealing eith Libya and Benghazi. This included a trip to Libya, I think.
she was fired from a Legal Staff position of the Democrat side of the Watergate Committee! The reason being "untrustworthy
Hillary wasn't exactly fired, and the persons who were really unethical in this respect were her bosses John Doar and Peter Rodino. John Doar had been given a special job just in charge of the impeachment inquiry. Jerry Zeifman, the majority counsel was not her boss and had no authority over her..
Zeifman refused to temporarily hire her on the committee payroll after the impeachment inquiry suddenly ended and he also refused to give her a recomemndation.
She had secreted the committee records from 1970 about giving the target of an impeachment inquiry the right to have a lawyer appear before the committee (they wanted to deny this to Nixon) This had been granted to Justice Douglas and the arguments that had prevailed were bottled up and kept away from minorty (Republican) counsel. Nixon did get the right to counsel anyway.
Zeifman considered her unethical because he thought her job was to write an honest appraisel and he did not realize that John Doar had told her or authorized her to seize all that stuff from 1970 - stuff she never referred to even to distinguish the two cases.
Honesty is a very western, Judeo-Christian quality. Most cultures do not think honesty is important. Some, in fact, think it is a hindrance.
People in Western Europe, Canada, and especially America have trouble understanding that cultural difference. It is huge. It is the difference between successful, inclusive cultures and disastrous cultures.
Sammy there's always an explanation from the Clintons. And some folks--like Sammy--will swallow it. After all some people still believe in the Tooth Fairy.
What terrible luck that the one time Bill Clinton lied, new evidence came to light... The one time! OMG, the guy cannot catch a break!
There is only one reason for her to have a private server. That is the only theoretical way that she could effectively delete an email.
Plus her providing the emails as printed pages.. classic.
Nothing to hid though, no siree!
"...Honesty is a very western, Judeo-Christian quality..."
Don't confuse post-modern progressivism with Judeo-Christian culture. Lying is like breathing with them. Ask any Clinton, any Obama, any climate change cultist. Or Althouse herself. She loves a good liar.
Ann is working around to voting for her now that her man-crush withdrew from the race.
My daughter, an SJW in training at an expensive east coast university doesn't know of a Hillary supporter.
I don't either, for that matter, except on line here.
I had coffee with her this weekend and asked her to make sure they are teacher her how to think, and not what to think.
Like bad luck and celebrity deaths, Sammy Finkleman posts always come in threes.
Hillary will likely skate on the issue because she has the MSM talking about the emails and not the private server. Because most reporters probably don't know the difference between an email account and a server or a router. And so we let this go beyond the threshold matter which was she should not have had a private server for public business. Period. You don't get to use your private server for business or government.
I don't see why we would want a liar, good or otherwise, in the White House. If you're honest, and competent, you don't need to lie all the time. And people who like their leaders lying because it "serves the greater good" are a lot like women who date cads who are jerks to others thinking "well he's nice to me" and then get surprised when he cheats on her.
That's not to say you don't want someone with tact and diplomacy, but there's a big difference between that and lying.
The Clintons will make everyone, liberal and conservative, rue the day we let them get elected. They need to be stopped.
There is a difference between not telling all you know and telling lies.
Some people think they have been lied to because they heard things that was not said.
But it is not the same thing; not at all.
"The other party doesn’t want to run against her. And if they do, they’d like her as mangled up as possible."
Mangled Up In Blue.
""...They’d like her as mangled up as possible.""
Projection.
The day I turned on Bill Clinton was the day I found out that he was lying with the finger wagging. I believed him. I thought all the Drudge stuff was fantasy.
After I found out he was lying, I said I will never trust again a man who can get past my bullshit detector as easily as he did.
White lies matter.
Meade snarked: White lies matter.
Isn't that more appropriate for the Bill Clinton thread?
Sorry, Meade, my bad. This is the Bill Clinton thread!
You consider that interview Bill speaking succinctly?
They say the key to being a successful liar is to believe what you're saying at the moment you're saying it. They say Bill possesses that skill.
"The other party doesn’t want to run against her. And if they do, they’d like her as mangled up as possible."
That right there is vintage Clinton bullshit. Makes me feel like I'm back in the 1990s.
"The greatest liar is someone we don't see as a liar. Who is that?"
Me.
Slick Willy is so slick there is no way to push back as he uses Hillary one more time. Do you understand that Bill controls Hillary...totally.
"What's sadder:
Needing Bill Clinton to vouch for your honesty and trusworthiness
People actually putting stock in Bill Clinton's profession of his wife's honesty and trustworthiness?"
Or that we will elect her anyway? Or some other Dem liar (e.g. Obama).
Embrace the decline.
Skeptical Voter said...9/27/15, 4:19 PM
Sammy there's always an explanation from the Clintons. And some folks--like Sammy--will swallow it.
Did I say that? Did I indicate I agreed?
I said that the spin they are putting on it is that all the accusations or possible accusations against Hillary are attacks by political opponents.
I didn't say I believed anything at all like that!
I did explain that that assertion that Hillary Clinton was fired by the Democrat side of the Watergate Committee (House Judiciary Committee) is not really accurate.
Jerry Zeifman, who was the Democratic counsel of the House JJudiciary Committee was not her boss. John Doar was hired as a special counsel just for the impeachment and reported directly to Peter Rodino. Jerry Zeifman was out of the chain of command.
Hillary Clinton was unethical, but she was not acting independently, and the people who were truly unethical, or had her act unethically, in trying to hide legal arguments from the minority counsel, and treating the arguments and the decision made in 1970 to allow Justice Doglas to be represented by counsel before the committee, as if it had never happened, were John Doar and Peter Rodino. It's just that Zeifman doesn't or didn't want to blame John doar for her seizing the records from 1970. (of course she couldn't hide the general fact that Justice Douglas got permisison to use counsel, and in fact the committee in the end gave Nixon the righgt to be represented by counsel in front of the committee)
When the impeachment inquiry ended rather suddenly, Hillary Rodham asked to stay on as an employee of the committee in general. This Jerry Zeifman refused to do. But he didn't exactly fire her. He refused to hire her.
He also refused to give her a letter of recommendation - and that was the only person from the impeachment inquiry that he refused to give a letter of recommendation to.
