“There was some mutton in the fridge which was taken away yesterday,” Sajida told the Express. “They thought it was beef. The police have taken it for examination... If the results prove that it was not beef, will they bring back my dead father?”

"A mob in India just dragged a man from his home and beat him to death — for eating beef."
"In a cruel irony, Akhlaq’s family insists that the meat in question wasn’t even beef."

So if it tests positive for beef ... justifiable homicide?
Be it so. This burning of widows is your custom; prepare the funeral pile. But my nation has also a custom. When men burn women alive we hang them, and confiscate all their property. My carpenters shall therefore erect gibbets on which to hang all concerned when the widow is consumed. Let us all act according to national customs.

Read some of the comments to today's NYT article on Vegans...
The problem with many cultures, and some religions like Islam, is that the concepts of the separation of church and state or live and let live are entirely foreign to them.
Are there lots of COEXIST bumper stickers in India?
Cow farts are a major greenhouse gas and contributor to Climate Change. Maybe we should have NASA do an outreach to the Hindus in India.
How many cows are there on Earth? Most estimates are 1.5 billion. If we all stopped eating beef (and stopped having our pets eat beef) then how many cows would there be? A lot, lot, lot fewer. Most vegans are, down deep, really just anti-bovinists.
My understanding is that the cows have always gotten eaten, after they die from causes other than slaughter, by the lowest classes, but that's a taboo subject in India.
Cows are worth more alive than slaughtered, was what they taught us in that Intro to Cultural Anthropology course.
That seems to be a standard academic business model: Take something that looks totally stupid on its face and show why it actually makes sense, once properly understood.
Mob of Hindus murders Muslim.
I'm thinking they had a different beef with him.

The police have taken it for examination.
So if it turns out to be beef, it was OK to kill the guy?

Where's the beef?
The religious wars of this century will make the 80 years war look like a picnic. We continue to sow the wind.
My Father in law, spends a fair amount of time studying Hindu scriptures (in Sanskrit no less) and is himself a vegetarian. He tells me that there is no prohibition on eating meat or beef.
That being said, these mobsters are not Hindu scholars and feel toward cows like we feel toward pet dogs, only more so.
Every member of the mob should be prosecuted and the government should not bother with forensics on the meat. To do so, validates the mob. Doing forensics implies that if it is beef, then the actions of the mob are validated.
Incidentally, when we were in New Delhi at the end of 2009 our fancy hotel had hamburgers on the room service menu--served with a fried egg on top--messy, unexpected and Delicious.
Completely off topic -- but: RIP Leon Varjian!
Soon we will be accepting beef-eating Indians as poltically persecuted refugees.

This.
At some point if we had a diligent press we would find out the real story. My guess is there are 2 communities that don't get along because no matter where Muslims are they cause problems. My guess would also involve the word child and the words sex/rape.
"This isn't beef, it's actually *mutton*" has been a thing in India for a long time now.-
Hindus eat meat and some eat beef without this type of backlash. Having spent much time there, Balinese will occasionally eat beef and don't seem to mind if people eat it, although it is not a common staple.
This is just a Hindu on Muslim crime.
I didn't know India had a "Beat Generation".
Muslim attacked by Hindu mob, says he dindu nuffin and ties it to their religious intolerance.
WaPo runs with it, at a time when we're supposed to be spreading out legs and thinking at least we're doing it for a good cause of poor Muslim refugees who, to a man (literally, all grown males), also dindu nuffin.
Nothing the least surprising about this.
let he who is without sin cast the first stone. Oh, wait, they don't believe in that.
If its not cow you must allow.
It reminds me of the time the vegans found out that the dentist hunted Cecil the lion. If they had found him at his office, would he be alive now?
When Cecil's brother ate the tour guide a week later, not too much uproar either way.
For the next Althouse exam hypothetical: Suppose the victim had been a Hindu and he really had eaten beef -- would it be all right to kill him? Support your answer with relevant authority.
Gotta shake my head after reading that. This is what vibrant diversity results in, absent an aggressive police state, or occupation force. Diversity, liberty, or social order. A society can have two out of three, if they try, but never all three.
