Men holding their babies wrong.

1. This guy at a Cubs' game shouldn't have been catching the ball anyway. It was fan interference. And he's holding a baby.

2. And Blake Lively's hunky husband did not put the baby in the front-pack carrier properly. "'James' feet are dangling out of the bottom of the carrier, and they're together. When baby's feet are pushed together in a carrier, it increases the risk of hip dysplasia, as their little hips are basically pushed out of their sockets. The other thing going wrong here is that James' head seems to be completely obscured. Babywearers always want to make sure they can see their infant's face, and keep their airways clear."

Questionable on fan interference. He barely entered the field of play to snag the ball.

Great catch and excellent job of holding the baby while doing it! I love that guy!

When they were small enough, I carried my kids like a football with the back of their head in the palm of my hand. Worked great (and caused female tsking which was a bonus).

You need a license to have a dog but not to have a kid.

The Cubs were at bat. No one was going to boo that guy.

The menace of infant manspreading needs to be our next target.

the baby's head is visible to Ryan Reynolds, just not the photographer.

The dad isn't holding the baby that way as a pattern, the dad is holding a baby while doing something else, and that leads to momentary shifts. Something busy dads and moms experience throughout every day. He's not in danger of dropping the baby. The picture is the sort that gets a place in grad or wedding slideshows, with the presenter making some joke about dad's priorities.

Yeah, as long as he robbed the opposition of an out. I remember when the governor of Florida offered a Cubs fan called Bartman asylum for giving the Marlins another out that way.

I had a lady stop me in a store to lecture me about how to hold onto my baby.

I just laughed and said that my previous two had survived and I thought this one would too.

Then she followed me around the store offering helpful advice.

That is not hip dysplasia.

Hip dysplasia means that the hip joint is the wrong shape, or that the hip socket is not in the correct position to completely cover and support the femoral head.

Todd said...

Would this all fall under "womansplaining"? Or is my saying that a macro-aggression? Or both?

You have to understand, anything a man does differently from the way a woman does it is automatically wrong. It's like the joke, "If a man alone is a forest says something, is he still wrong?" Most women will automatically reply in the affirmative.

Ryan Reynolds's baby's feet are not together. And his face is not obscured to him.

I love women who need to prove they are the best mothers in the world by telling other parents how to do things. Those are the Mommies. The Public Mommies.

Most men are quite capable of catching a ball and holding a ten pound child at the same time. No problem.

Front mounted papooses are ridiculous on men. No man should ever carry a papoose. He should use his arm to hold an infant. There's no "getting tired" either. The baby is ten pounds, he can hold it all day long.

I agree, I was not referring to you, sorry for the confusion.

My girls always liked it when I held them the ball game guy way. Now my granddaughter likes it.

Saint Croix said...

The Cubs fan is not holding his baby wrong. That is entirely the right way to hold a baby while you catch a baseball. That father is awesome.

The Cubs fan is holding the baby wrong by holding it in the front row in the area where foul balls come.

Look at the people in the background of that shot. There's a young woman who's just delighted — squeeing over a man with a baby — and an older man who's quite angry and disgusted.

Birches said...

That Cubs Dad is awesome.

I can't believe people are freaking out over a picture. I am so tired of the Mommy Brigade telling the rest of us how we're doing it all wrong. I'm surprised no one has commented on the fact Cubs Dad was feeding his child Bottle! possibly filled with poisonous formula!.

Ambrose said...

I bet Old Man is not disgusted because of the baby, but because of the memory of Bartman. Or maybe he is annoyed with baby, but not that Cubs Dad caught the ball with baby, but that baby is at the game in the first place. My FIL would be pissed if he had seats next to an infant, even if that infant were his own grandchild.

But this one is better. No glove. That poor guy in red never gets the carom.

He's assessing the danger risk, which is minimal. And when danger shows up anyway, he handles it.

That was good, but that's not a baby as the headline claims, that's a toddler.

I have no sympathy for Ryan Reynolds and his faux womb mishap.

Freeman Hunt said...

Maybe they're hiking. He should wear the baby if they're hiking. The terrain is uneven.

My dad once rollerskated at a rink with me on his shoulders. We were at another child's birthday party. I was probably three or four. There weren't so many nannies then, so no one told him no to do it. We both figured out that it was a bad idea when he fell.

Freeman Hunt said...

I used to ride on his shoulders when he mowed the lawn too. It was great because it was the only time I could see over the neighbors' fences and into their yards.

mccullough said...

Nice catch. This is still the greatest fan interference ever and with replay review will never be duplicated again.

Ryan Reynolds' technique looks quite dangerous for the baby. What happens to its ankles when he sits down? That's not where the legs are supposed to go at all, how's the blood flow down there?

Henry said...

I personally think the fan interference rule should be retired, except where a fan actually falls out of the stands.

Players can go into the stands to make a catch. Let the fans lean out a little if the ball is that close.

First women complained that men weren't involved enough in their children's lives. Now The Mommies are complaining that men don't do things the way a woman would.

Meade: I read the story, it's awful. When mothers kill, though, there's usually a quick follow up about the need for better mental health support, better community support, more understanding about postpartum mental challenges, that sort of thing. I submit there is a qualitative difference in the ways our society reacts to (and talks about) harm (or possible harm) done to children by mothers vs the same by fathers.

I'm a lifelong Cub fan, and was amused by the dad's catch like everyone. I was watching MLB Network and I believe they showed it live.

But I agree with our dear host that it is incredibly stupid and dangerous to bring a child that age to a baseball game and sit in the line of fire. For that matter, any individual who cannot protect themselves is playing with their life.

A baseball, lined foul, can get on you quicker than most people can reasonably react. The reaction by most spectators, even on a high pop foul, is a cringing coverup. Many years ago, I saw a child - maybe 10 years-old - get carried off on a stretcher, a bloody mess, at Wrigley Field from being struck with a foul ball.

Greater likelihood of the baby being hurt by a foul ball or hurt in a car accident going to/from the game?

They should keep that child in a locked room at home where nothing can hurt him/her!!

Gahrie said...

Impossible. Nothing a woman can do is wrong. Unless it offends gay people...then you have to find the man who caused her to do wrong.

On a day I was there, the same happened to a man who showed up early and decided to read a paper during batting practice. I doubt he knew what hit him.

I didn't say you couldn't switch arms. And men carried Garands around for four years without a lot of breaks.

St. Croix, I like this one better -- although it would be even better if a Mom was present in it too.

Gonzalez probably should have tried a bit harder for the ball. But he's an excellent hitter and it makes no sense to risk injury trying to make that catch, especially since it was a pitcher at bat. He got the interference call and the out anyway.

Gonzalez is a smart player. Smarter than anyone in the stands paying to watch the Cubs.

Holding the baby is like cooking or housecleaning. If a man does it right, he risks getting assigned that duty in the future.

Only as long as players are allowed punch fans in the face.

Having had baby siblings, babysat other kids, having four kids of my own and a granddaughter, you can actually hold them pretty much anyway. Of course, if they are like my granddaughter or son #2, holding them at all took monumental effort,

I've also learned that when asleep, even a fifteen pound baby feels like a hundred pounds.

natatomic said...

Okay, more than one person here so far has commented along the lines of, "The baby's feet aren't together!" As if to say there's no issue. Ummm...the BIGGEST issue is that the baby's feet are poking out the bottom. Ya'll see that that doesn't even look remotely right...right? :S
At that age, the baby should have her legs in an "M" or frog-legged position and tucked inside the carrier. Once her legs are long enough to fit knee-to-knee with her legs dangling on the sides of the carrier (without the legs being over extended, to the point to where the knees can bend freely and the fabric of the carrier is not bunched underneath), then she can ride with her feet out. But again...NOT through the bottom. Now, I don't expect everyone to know THAT much about babywearing. Those are some fairly specific rules. But who on earth (besides Ryan Reynolds) thinks that's even REMOTELY correct to have her legs dangle out the bottom, with the strap pulled tight against them?
