Living in the country...
1. Can you picture it? From interior of the TT, yesterday, we saw some interesting parcels of land.
2. Use the comments for talking about anything, including real estate dreams... and Badgers football/basketball.
3. If you need to shop, may I recommend The Althouse Amazon Portal?

I'd like to buy a piece of property with dark skies for my astronomy. The light-polluted skies of Madison are a drag.
Still waiting for Daughter 1 to deliver our first grandchild. Was hoping for yesterday (my birthday), but no joy. :(
The DOW is at 17,959.
I feel vertiginous.
It's Dartmoor. You finally travelled and took the TT with you.
The pic looks at first like the fireman's view on the left side of an E8 diesel locomotive.
Probably, like Tootle, messing around off the tracks.
Althouse, have you ever thought that the first people to engineer an automobile were likely in similar frames of mind to those now engineering space travel?
And that space tourism might benefit all parties just as much as car tourism clearly did at one point, and does today?
May the first space tourists be your grandchildren and also men-in-shorts. May one day they tour parcels of land from Earth orbit.
Country living??
Are we thinking of retirement?
I've come to the conclusion that if you aren't working the land, then you better live in the city.
I should say, may the first be you, but may your grand kids take a spin to see the stars up closer
2. They do not make any more of it.
Woops, 1!.
"I've come to the conclusion that if you aren't working the land, then you better live in the city."
Amen. Especially if you don't like the smell of manure or the sound of guns.
Retirement planning by air.
A Saudi Sheik just took a helicopter tour over houses for sale in Beverly Hills and picked one out from that and paid $30,000,000 for one he never went inside, but he required it to be vacated and closed in three weeks before Ramadan.
From the Illinois countryside not far from Wisconsin... We are sports rivals for sure but good neighbors in all else. The trip north was always enjoyable. In old times to drink since we were Illinois underage and later to party in Baraboo after prom and yes, Tommy Bartlett and the Dells. In politics Illinois has a lock on the "Democratic Iron fist" offense and a steady hand on public Union pension spigot. Wisconsin had LaFollette in the past and Walker now. That Green Bay always fields a good team and finds a great quarterback is my pride too. I cheered the Packers for the first Super Bowl and can still see Max MxGee reach behind the his defender and make a one handed catch for the ages.
So, I'm saying I love the pictures of the country side.
depressing...maybe for an overnight, but not year round Mary.
And you are not really city Helen. You are more suburban.
Madison is not a city. Madison is 8 blocks of city surrounded by strip malls, franchise restaurants and apartment complexes...in other words-kind of gross. Sorry, sad but true.
Fab's move after being educated at UW. Or really fabs move after High School. They want a real "beach" not a "beach" at Picnic Point, which is not a beach, nor is a beach at any lake.....geez. Your "Lakes" would be considered ponds or pools in the fab east coast.
The fact that Madison thinks itself special is really disturbing and not true..but maybe compared to Beloit and Janesville, which are hideous.
Go East!
And the Jazzman store queens.......please, girl, you are selling shit, with no actual designer names, to Eau Claire tourists-you are not glam.
I may just be an old country lawyer laboring away in north Georgia, but I have a red Bucky Badger hoodie that's so heavy it has to be really cold for me to wear it. But wear it proudly, I do. Maybe I'll put it on to go shopping today.
Titus, you're such a New England WASP.
Women like thinking about country living more than the actual living in the country. I think it has something to do with lack of purse and shoe shops.

More like a GASP.
_______________
The photo looks very familiar. I'd like to know more details as to where.

Titus could never get laid in Madison. Too intellectual?
Movin' to the country, gonna eat a lot of peaches
Jean Shepherd reports (9/24/1963) that somebody is taking over the PA system in the Miami Eastern Airlines terminal and playing taps every couple of hours.
This was before Homeland Security.
At ages 78 and 79 we have been living in the country, actually wooded wilderness since 1997. We have 7 acres of mostly woods, the only clearing is the drive in and about one acre around the house which is fenced to keep out the wildlife. That would be feral hogs, cougars, bobcats deer and such. The smaller wildlife such as feral cats, rabbits, skunks and raccoons are able to get in.
We are no longer able to keep up with the outdoors and are looking for a place in town.
Just letting you know to be prepared, there will come a time when country will not be as fun as it used to be. It was wonderful to be here and we will particularly miss the whoops of the whooping cranes which are right across our fence. I was privileged a couple of years ago to watch as several different groups gathered together in the sky and headed north. I will miss that and the deer.
Don't sweat it, Rocky, Ann will be dead in five years from anosmia. She promised! So be sure to get something that Meade likes.
That's beautiful terrain. It looks like some cultivated land with surprisingly big trees (maybe along a property line). Althouse finds good things to photograph.
It's an American thing to want to live in the country. We did it in our late thirties and loved it so much that when we left it we had to hold onto the farm. Fortunately for us, rent on the two houses located on the farm pays the mortgage. But although we talk wistfully about "going back", we never will, I'm quite sure. Still, it was a time in our lives we had to do it and we did it right.
Living in the country is great, as long as you keep the city place. Or a condo there, or better yet, a condo someplace warm. Even the Cartwrights had an apartment in town beside the Ponderosa, if I recall correctly.
As for the comments about there being no beaches in any lake, that is simply not true. There are islands around here with south facing coves that have collected sand for the past 10K years since the glaciers melted. The sand goes from the shore to 20 ft deep in a gentle drop off. I have a lot more fun anchoring the boat in about 8 ft of water and swimming on a remote beach where there are no visible houses than frying on a Florida beach, trying to keep the sand that sticks to the sunblock out of your drinks in a cabana or whatever, skipping the stinging jellyfish in the water and on the beach, and oh yeah, the sea lice (jellyfish larvae).
I could see having a vacation cabin in the country within driving distance of my house in town. Just for a change of pace and change of scenery. A place to see stars and hear the silence.
I was interested in moving to the country until I heard that you have to choose between having snakes or mice around. I choose neither and urban density.
That far north, snakes are pretty rare, but mice, I would say that in the back of my house, beyond where it is regularly mowed, there is more than one mouse per square yard.
I have the nicest cat ever. Joey. He needed flea+tic drops, and he didn't want it, and he's a big cat. He could have ripped a new orifice in me, but he didn't even draw his claws. Just struggled a bit. Nice guy.
Titus is just playing snob as he always does. In reality he is out in Eau Claire with honey boo boo in one hand and a stick of deep fried butter in the other.

So true. I bet he jerks off while reading Cotton Mather. It's some odd permutation of the Jewish boy, Catholic girl trope.

That's what I call Fab.
Titus is a fake, of some kind. Listen to his descriptions of sex. No human does these things.
