November 4, 2014

Settle in and watch the returns roll in...

... here.

Who needs TV? TV is just for company. But you can find company here, where we can talk to each other.

UPDATE 1: McConnell has already won, according to CNN, where everyone is talking freakily fast.

UPDATE 2: It's all about Ed.

UPDATE 3:  Looks like I've lost my pick-an-upset bet, and Meade is going to win. (I bet Scott Brown, and Meade picked Thom Tillis.) As for Scott Walker, the prime concern here in Wisconsin, it looks like he's well ahead, but how much of the Madison and Milwaukee votes are in?

UPDATE 4: Ed is slipping.

UPDATE 5: One more GOP pickup needed now to take the Senate, Cory Gardner having won Colorado.

UPDATE 6: The race is called in Wisconsin. "It's over. We will stand with Governor Walker," says Meade.

UPDATE 7: We got in the car and drove up to the Capitol to check out whether there were any protests or celebrations. All was calm. We drove around the square, and I had to restrain Meade, who wanted to do the "This is what democracy looks like" horn beeping.

UPDATE 8: The view of the Capitol just now. [PHOTO MOVED TO THE NEW POST, ABOVE.]

UPDATE 9: The GOP gubernatorial candidate won in Illinois. And it looks like Tillis did win in North Carolina.

UPDATE 10: Joni!

UPDATE 11: Scott Brown finally concedes at midnight. So I lost the pick-an-upset bet, and Meade won. Still not clear if Meade wins the bet on Scott Walker, who must win with at least 53%.

UPDATE 12: Let's call it a wave.

I grant that Reid is worse, but come on, in your heart you know Mitch is a weasel. I hope my vote does something to keep the weasel on his toes.

Obama is simply awful too, but like Roberts and McConnell, he won't hold the seat forever. Someday the Democrats may nominate a decent person for President. If that person is better than the Republican, I'll vote for that person. If the Republican is clearly better, I'll go Republican. If they're effectively the same, I'll vote Libertarian. If my vote makes either or both parties actually pay attention to Libertarian issues, my vote will have been a good vote.

Totally different situations in Kansas and Wisconsin. In Kansas you had elected Republicans crossing over to support the governor's opponent because he cut education funding. They stabbed him in the back so he would be right in purging those who betrayed him.
The payback threat in Wisconsin came from the public unions; it was not intra-party.

I never visited that site until I read VX's comment. Not only are they veritable buzzing hive of shit-for-brains socialists drones, they congregate at one of the crappiest websites I've ever laid eyes on. I mean, it's the 21st century you doofuses, take a look at CSS,or it least HTML 5... jeez.

BTW, I'm reading Anabasis tonight.

From the bowels of that link:

"I wish I could chalk it up to 'All this election PROVES is that >50% the people who showed up to vote in 6 states ... are mouth-breathing, brain-washed, Faux-Watching knuckle-draggers', but the reality is, it goes MUCH deeper than that. Nearly 1/2 the country are this way. This is proof that lies and propaganda ... work. This election shows that a great many people in this country ... are actually either morons, or they are evil. "

More of that sort of thing at the link.

Strange that RCP still won't call Kansas even after Davis has conceded.

Oops - it just showed up there on RCP.

Ugly.

Margin of difference between Reps and Dems <4,000 maybe less.

I guess that answers teh introspection question.

Probably VA is going to a recount. But of course it would be better to go to a recount ahead instead of behind.

Lamentations

In one thread they're debating where they should all move so that they need not live in states run by "rethug nazis". They seem to be settling on Oregon, since it has a mild climate and no sales tax.

They don't grok irony, do they?

Today was a good day.

Yet again the biggest losers are the libertarians. Their guy doesn't win, but they screw it for the republican. Please stop proving you are retarded by voting so foolishly, we know it already.
Can we all chip in and buy them some pot brownies on Election Day? we,ll give you free pot! Just please stop voting! You are not doing it right.

Quaestor said...

What I don't understand is the political culture of Louisiana. They have three Republicans on the ballot. Three!! Between them they hold 55% of the votes so far (99% in). The Dems also have three, and hold 42% (Landrieu has 41% now)

This means a runoff and about a billion more Hollywood dollars will be spent for Old Baby Fat between now and December.

Fix your damned constitution, LA!

MikeR said...

"Just please stop voting!" Somehow I don't think that would help.

Pianoman said...

@Quaestor: It looks like LA just collapses their primary and general together. I guess in the long run it's cheaper this way, because you have that chance of *not* having a runoff.

Looks like an easy win for the GOP though. The two top Repubs are easily over 50%.

Quaestor said...

Give the brownies to the Libertarian candidates so they'll stop running!

The only thing more useless than the "message" voter is the "message" candidate.

Sullivan is up 5 in Alaska with 23% reporting. Might be +8 by tomorrow morning.

+9 by January ...

Hey Juan Williams: If it was an "anti-incumbent" election, why did the GOP INCREASE it's lead in the House?

what a tool

Zack: Dudes, let's run down to the Board of Elections and register as Libertarians!

Jason: Huh?

Sean: No way, Jose. We are just sooo baked on these killer brownies Quaestor dropped off for us. Have one.

Connecticut is not looking good. Very disappointing, Malloy has been a really bad governor, on a par with Quinn in Illinois (although not as crooked), a wholly-owned subsidiary of the public employee unions. Hard to believe that Connecticut was once an industrial state with a thriving economy. Now it's ruled by an iron triangle of public employee unions, liberal gentry and state dependents, none of whom care about the private sector and economic growth.

Quastor, I like your idea. Not only that it would be a lot cheaper providing pot to a few candidates as opposed to a few thousand voters. And we do have a huge deficit.

Yet another example of a person who mistakenly thinks "you voted for someone else" means "if that person wasn't running, you'd have voted for me".

If someone told you "if you idiots hadn't voted Republican, the Libertarian candidate could have won", you would quite rightly take him about as seriously as we take you.

Revenant said...

I second all of Achilles' predictions. I don't expect anything to change for the better in the next two years.

Continued gridlock is the best-case scenario. Worse case scenario is bipartisan legislation by the establishment GOP + Obama.

but the libertarian candidate couldn't have won!!! It was a purely wasted vote. And cost the conservative the election and lef the guy who voted with Obama 97% of the time in power.

jr565 said...

Rev, do you want democrats to continue to have control of the senate and the presidency? There is only one way to change that. And thats simply to get enough seats in the senate so they don't control it. What does voting libertarian get you, if at the end of the day Harry Reid still controls the senate?
Two sides are talking about the rules of the game. And then a third side seems to not even recognize there is a game at all. Get with the program already.

jr565 said...

Libertarians keep voting to spoil elections in the favor of the democrat. No gains getting candidates into power. Isn't that what it's supposed to be about?

jr565 said...

Libs voted for Nader ONCE. Libertarians vote for the loser every time! When Nader lost they got Bush, and so learned their lesson and stopped voting for Nader. Why are liberals able to learn this but libertarians aren't? Every election we get the same story. Just stop it already.

Thank GOD there were enough republicans this time who didn't throw away their vote. Harry Reid is no longer majority leader thanks to repubs.

I'm surprised that my pick for an upset (LePage in Maine) actually worked--but an even bigger surprise was Larry Hogan winning here in Maryland. Our state is bluer than Massachusetts.

Looks like GOP has some solid insurance seats for 2016, though if McConnell is smart he'll work to keeping Kirk, Ayotte, Toomey, Johnson and Rubio safe in two years. I wouldn't want to see Reid back in power again.

Hopefully no Supreme Court vacancies come up in the next two months!

Brando said...

There's also just no good way for Obama to spin this--hell, even if the Democrats had done well yesterday, it still would have been because they all distanced themselves from him. He's in the same place Bush was in in 2006.

The six year itch is usually tough on two term presidents (though Clinton did well in '98, it was partly due to more vulnerable GOP seats as well as GOP overreach with the impeachment that year) due to voter fatigue, and Obama displayed a good deal of incompetence and corruption that bubbled over this year. He's now an albatross for his party.

It's possible to turn this around, but he first has to acknowledge that there's an opposition party he needs to work with. It's still possible to get some things done.
