Unfortunately, we're staying around the house today. Just got back from Brazil, and so there's unpacking to do, laundry, cleaning up my rose garden, etc.

Looks like a beautiful day in your hometown though. Hope you and Meade enjoy it.

I did get out already, and had a nice encounter with a one-armed man.

I've always thought zinnias look like they are made of plastic. Pretty, but plastic.

It had never occurred to me to check, but zinnias are one of the plants named for a botanist, like dieffenbachia or fuchsia or rafflesia: Johann Gottfried Zinn. He's the subject of a short Wikipedia article.

Just think, had you pursued a different career there might be a plant called althousia. . . .

I haven't noticed mosquitoes in the daytime at all.

Is this the same lake you recently told us was unsafe to swim in?

Credits to an Althouse at Community Theater .... same here, laundry and gardening. just got back from a 2 week whirlwind trip to Chicago to see family and friends with a girlfriend's outing to Notre Dame to see the Grand World Baton Twirling and Dance Championships. Winners represent TEAM USA in Italy. Was great to see the twirlers, our girlfriends' group being a part of the disbanded grand world champs, "Apple Core". And then seeing the South Florida Super Stars at dinner and meeting their leader who remembers our Apple Core group. A reunion of sorts. Was really nice.

It's rained off and on all day here in North Carolina, but it's been cool, so that's good. The new dachshund puppy peed in the house. I spent half the day editing an agency filing that's due on Monday. We went to lunch at a Mexican restaurant, where the food was very bland.

But I was with the woman I love, so it was a beautiful day. I wish no less for Ann and Meade.

I think Meade and I must buy from the same store.

We got some great bright orange zinnias this year, those two plants just glow like they're about to hunt deer. Wisco zinnias.

Yesterday I went into town to have lunch with Dad. As I was turning onto Sunshine Blvd, I spotted a county sheriff's van following four prisoners from the country jail, two on each side of the road, who were picking up trash as they walked along. A couple of miles farther down Sunshine, I saw another van with four more prisoners coming from the opposite direction, and stretched out beyond them for the next couple of miles were blue plastic trash bags waiting to be picked up the next time the garbage trucks come around. It was a little after noon, mostly sunny and about 94 degrees, according to my car's thermometer.

I thought about this, and about shows like Orange Is The New Black, and wondered if these were prisoners being rewarded for good behavior, or if being sent out in the heat was more of a punishment than a reward. I told Dad about it at lunch, and he said that it could be both.

Looks like a fabulous day for sailing. A cooler with sandwiches, several cold brews, and the company of my sweety. A fantastic way to spend the day.

OK, I never saw this post because I never opened my computer yesterday.

5:00 am: my buddy and I watched the final twelve bass boats blast away from the launch in the final day of competition for the Bassmasters Norther Open.

8:00 am: got in 9 holes, played pretty well. The course was not crowded yet, the weather was lovely.

Meanwhile "the girls" went out shopping for the day, "perfect" as Lois Lerner would say.

11:00 AM: went fishing for pike out on the reef, not much luck, after a couple hours of marking fish and not catching them, we decide to snorkel around the boat and see what the "fishfinder" is seeing, see a pickerel swim away, and a couple of perch, no big pike, oh well, the water was nice and the swim was nice.

2:00 pm: Got home, for lunch, had a nice order of poutine from a local food stand.

3:00 pm: Tinkered with the lawnmower, got it running and mowed the back yard had a cold beer.

4:30 pm: Girls came home, we had a snack and a couple drinks, then we all went out fishing again, this time in earnest, and caught a mess of perch.

6:30 pm: Cleaned and fried up the perch for dinner while enjoying some red wine with local cheese the girls picked up up in Quebec, some honey in the comb, and some great rustic bread.

7:15 pm: Ate the perch with a salad from the garden, fried green garden tomatoes, local corn, and some more wine.

8:00 pm: Went out for maple "creamees" and ate them watching the sun set over the lake and the Adirondacks.

The only thing that could have been better was a Bond movie to watch before bed. Instead, we had to settle for lesser fare in the form of a Star Trek movie with Shatner and Nimoy which I fell asleep watching. Make a note to self to keep a couple Bond movies handy on TiVo in the future on way to bed.

That looks like perfect small-boat weather on Lake Mendota. But...why's the water SO GREEN? Did it get contaminated with algae from Lake Erie?
