I think that's how you're supposed to see it, but I think it's a photograph that was used as a basis for the drawing and then the drawing was held in front of the photograph.
I looked at it a while before coming to that assumption.

Clever idea and the drawings are good.
Nice execution but in some dim recess of my memory it seems like I've seen something similar in Mad or National Lampoon.

Does the hand or the drawing ever cast a shadow on the scene in the photograph? The lighting on the hand and the drawing has a "studio" look to it.
Clues like that.
