"I thought this would be the perfect time, with this medium of the music video, with this icon Googoosh, to open the conversation about it..."

".. and to say: freedom to love for all is something that we should understand, and should be for."

Pop music and gay liberation... in Iran.

It's in the New York Times, and the dateline is Amsterdam. I'm sure the article is full of speculation, rainbows, and unicorns for homosexuals in Iran. It's feel good bullshit.

If the dateline stated Tehran, then I might have continued reading.

And aware lesbians tend to rankle less?

Sounds like a NAMBLA quote, actually. Kind of creepy. You know, because she's not really talking about any freedom to "love." There is no way, place or time where she's forbidden to love whomever she pleases. Heloise loved Abelard and that received social disapprobation at a level only Iran can match these days.

She's talking about sexual license, the freedom to fuck who you want, and have it approved of in the public arena (or not punished by hanging in Iran).

I'm sympathetic to those stuck in that particular loony hell-hole, but in general to be that focussed on your sexual urges seems a little coarse, like those gourmands who are always going on about the perfection of the latest chunk of fat-fried meat they ingested.

Good thing no movement has yet sprung up insisting on public veneration of any idiosyncrasy in its enjoyment of the remaining major sensual drive, id est elimination. That would be truly gross.

Shouting Thomas probably supports the radical Islamic forces in Iran as they represent "traditional cultures" which are paramount to him.

Just recently I rented Wadjda. It was made by a Saudi woman and details the plight of women there. It wasn't polemical. The observations were sharp and chilling, but the characters were humane and, occasionally, funny. It's well worth a rental.......It's truly amazing how well meaning, well intentioned people can make their lives miserable in pursuit of some ideal.
