"Ads Attacking Health Law Stagger Outspent Democrats."

A headline in the NYT that reads like the subject line on a Democratic Party email hitting me up for a contribution. Here's the first paragraph of the article:
Democrats are increasingly anxious about an onslaught of television ads hitting vulnerable Senate and House candidates for their support of the new health law, since many lack the resources to fight back in the early stages of the midterm campaign.
Anxiety! Vulnerability!

Has my tight purse loosened up yet?
Since September, Americans for Prosperity, a group financed in part by the billionaire Koch brothers....
Oh, no! The Kochs! The Kochs! Oh, Democrats, I'm all yours! Yours! Take whatever you will!

That article was right next to the one discussing all the Left wing organizations funded by Soros....right?

Funny how rarely the media mentions Soros, yet he has outspent the Koch brothers.

If the Koch Brothers didn't exist, someone would have to invent them as the universal boogeyman (boogeymen?) to liberals. How dare billionares spend money to spread their political views and give money to politicians? Ok, they can give to liberal politicians and support liberal views but that's completely different!

More in the "republicans are evil" theme.

Who were the bogeymen before the Koch Brothers? They (Koch) only came on the scene in 2010, right?

Koch Funeral Home was *the* funeral home in my hometown. The Kochs lived almost directly behind us.

No relation :)

Soros made his money and fame speculating on capitalism's failure, of which lefties tacitly approve. Did George Soros ever fund or hire a man not dedicated to the demise of something?

The Koch Brothers build things and make things. Sure, they fund "dirty jobs" but that that's what we need more of -- not speculation and deck chair rearrangers.

I'm glad that even the NYT screams at the Koch shadow. It's reached the point where mentioning the Kochs is like some ironic Seinfeldian punch line.

Who were the bogeymen before the Koch Brothers?

Anyone associated with Halliburton.

From the article:

“Democrats need money at this early stage in order to fight back against the limitless spending from the Kochs,” said Guy Cecil, the executive director of the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee. “As we get closer to the election, we will have the resources to introduce their Tea Party candidates before they have an opportunity to define themselves for voters, but right now the limitless spending from the Kochs means we need Democratic donors to step up in a bigger way immediately.”

Jesus H. Christ. Reporter Carl Hulse slaps the fundraising pitch right into the middle of the article. Who needs advertising when you got the New York Times?

Henry said...

But note this giveaway: “As we get closer to the election, we will have the resources to introduce their Tea Party candidates before they have an opportunity to define themselves for voters..."

Got that? Democrats are complaining that someone jumped them on the demonization season.

"Shit, Carl, we're primed to slime every Republican who runs for dogcatcher; we'll smear them up, down, and crossways. We just need you to give us cover for a few months."

The Democrats can't possibly be surprised that Obama care is unpopular since they forced the bill through without even attempting to achieve a consensus. Nancy Pelosi parading through protestors with an oversized gavel and then lying about their reaction was a Democrat triumph similar to what the Romans used to stage when they had defeated an enemy and brought home a string of captives to humiliate and murder in the coliseum. Blaming the Koch brothers because the bill is unpopular is another arrogant display of power in which the conquered people are presented of so unworthy that they deserve their fate.

I, for one, anxiously await the gnashing of teeth and rending of garments by the Democrats and the press (but I repeat myself) when the Senate turns "R" this year, the House expands its majority, and even more State legislatures and governorships also trend "R".

DanTheMan said...

"Limitless spending"? I knew the Koch's had money, but an infinite amount... that's impressive.

Hagar said...

It continues to amaze that the Democrats cannot process the fact that, after 80 years of Democrat political hegemony, the "Big Money Interests" belong to them, not the underdog Republicans.

So, when are Republican politicians finally going to call out the NYT for what it is, a Democrat PR firm. Nothing more.

"Who were the bogeymen before the Koch Brothers?"

CSA, in turn, sent $235,000 to United Sportsmen of Wisconsin, an allegedly pro-hunting group that is very active in right-wing politics unrelated to anything to do with sportsmen. The group sent out phony absentee ballot applications during the summer 2011 recalls. It also received a $500,000 state grant in 2013, added to the state budget by the Republican majority, which was later rescinded after its political connections to high-ranking Republicans and Americans for Prosperity were revealed. United Sportsmen’s tax filings were not found in any databases, and it hasn’t responded to the Shepherd’s request to provide the documents, as they are required by law to do. The group is linked to CSA’s John Connors.

“We already know that Americans for Prosperity, David Koch’s tea party group, spent at least $10 million in Wisconsin elections,” Center for Media and Democracy’s Fischer told the Shepherd. The new revelations about CPPR “reveal additional questions about how much more Koch money actually flowed into Wisconsin’s recall elections that was never disclosed.”

Get the taxpayer to fund your campaign through a phony sportsmens group. Genius!

Their use of specific targets, like the Kochs, who support gay marriage, to hate on/scare people is really creepy.

It also reveals the Dems reliance on keeping their supporters ignorant of who the Kochs actually are, as opposed to the scarecrow they have erected in their place, so they can raise money by shaking it at then and going "KOCH BROTHERS! BOO!"

You could start a new religion with this epistemology.

Wait. You already have.

The party of the rich is the Democrat Party. Them trotting out the Kochs to go "boo!" doesn't change any of that.

One doesn't have to be a partisan to note this. One has to merely look at the donor lists.

Soros made his money arbitraging pegged currency: a socialist deviation from economic freedom. So your statement would only be true if you consider capitalism more akin to corporatism than economic freedom.

"Who were the bogeymen before the Koch Brothers?"

What's odd about the Dem fixation on the Koch brothers is how unlikely it is to matter to actual voters. Anyone sufficiently clued in to know who they are and why you are supposed to hate (or love) them is almost certainly already pretty settled in his political opinions and partisan preferences. Yet the Dems routinely invoke the Koch brothers in almost talismanic fashion -- as Rachel Maddow did a couple of weeks ago on a matter having no connection to them, and as the Dems are doing now in the special election in Florida, where Alex Sink and the Dem committees are talking about Koch money when the Dems have outraised the Reps by about 10 to 1.

I suppose everyone needs a bogey-man, even if it's just to encourage those who really don't need much encouragement.

The Koch's politics are libertarian, not conservative. So when you read the left's hysteria keep in mind they used to lament that libertarians didn't have enough influence over the social conservatives who control the Republican Party. The same switch is also true of the Tea Partiers.

In truth the left demonizes whoever it needs to reagrdless of facts.

"Ads Attacking Health Law Stagger Outspent Democrats."

It isn't like Ads are really needed. Like I had mentioned previously, one trip to the ER with a family member is enough to really make you hate Obama and all those (Garage, AMR, Inga, Dr. Althouse, etc.) who voted in this mess.

Previous plan $350 a month. Obama plan is $1200 a month. Old max family out of pocket $15,000. Obama max $40,000. 100% covered before. 80% with Obama.

When people seriously have to think "should we just try to put this arm back in socket?" versus "let's go to the ER" because YOU elected this pathological liar. The insurance we wanted and used worked before. Now ...

Yeah, we don't need ads. We are having a hard enough time being civil when your petty paper god keeps destroying our lives.

I'd like to amplify Larry J's comment and amend it to say that the "Koch Bros.TM" the Left talks about are an invention and bear very little resemblance to the actual billionaires who give money to the ACLU and other organizations.

Pick ANY known Liberal philanthropist and that person likely contributes much more to politics than the "Koch Bros.TM" do.

Alex said...

I would like to know what % of the anti-ACA ads are funded by the Koch brothers. I hate that billionaires have such power over our national discourse.

Mike (MJB Wolf) said...

Wow, Garage, $10 MILLION on the Wisconsin elections! Gnarly! We only need about 5 more sets of "Koch Bros.TM" then to equal the amount spent by unions to rip off the good peoples of Wisconsin...er, "influence" the election.

Mike (MJB Wolf) said...

Alex, I think I read on NRO that the Kochs haven't really taken a position on the ACA or financed ads for or against it. That smear from the DNC/NYT news service may just be 100% made up bullshit, as usual.

Mike (MJB Wolf) said...

Well, this:

http://www.powerlineblog.com/archives/2013/10/the-koch-brothers-always-the-story-even-when-they-arent.php

...is about another lying smear on the Kochs by the NYT. Different subject but same method: smear the "Koch Bros.TM" in the headline but obscure the detail that...no $$ came from them.

It was likely PowerLineBlog where I saw the other article as well. Whatever. Back to work!

Alex said...

Yeah because citing a right-wing blog gives one credibility.

Mike (MJB Wolf) said...

No citation is credible in and of itself, as the NYT proves every day. But, Alex, there are facts cited on PowerLine, which enables the reader to check for themselves whether the text is credible or not. The piece is more fact-based than the DNC press release Ann wrote about.

Prove it, Garage. Show me where Koch reported spending their money on these ads, because I don't believe the DNC or the NYT when they say the Kochs spent money.

Check out Forbes: http://www.forbes.com/sites/lauriebennett/2012/03/31/tracking-koch-money-and-americans-for-prosperity/

They do some actual reporting, and find amounts in the low single digits ($3.7M) given by the Kochs to a group that then redistributes donations to AFP. Not exactly Soros-level money!

Freeman Hunt said...

Democrats are making me pay for ads against them. The monthly additional expense of Obamacare will always be there to remind me that I will never support anyone who helped get it passed.

Big Mike said...

Democrats are starting to get that voters are angry. The Times is trying to make the case that the voters' sentiments are little more than a Pavolvian response to unfair ads.

But the ads aren't unfair. The statements and votes attributed to Shaheen and Landrieu, et. al., were made and did happen. And people are angry.
