"We know a lot about President Obama, and I think the idea that he would want the IRS used for retribution — we have no evidence of any such thing."

Says Carl Bernstein, declaring that the Obama administration's IRS scandal is not Watergate.
"In the Nixon White House, we heard the president of the United States on tape saying 'Use the IRS to get back on our enemies."
The link goes to Politico, which doesn't close the quotation marks around "Use the IRS to get back on our enemies," and doesn't link to specific Nixon quotes found on the Watergate tapes. It's strange to put quotes around that if it's not a quote. Here's the Wikipedia article "Nixon's Enemies List," which doesn't quote any Nixon remarks. It does have the truly shocking John Dean memo that asks "how we can use the available federal machinery to screw our political enemies." Politico needs to close the quotation marks and link to the quote or take away the quotes and add some material about how Nixon never said that and perhaps Bernstein — the wheeled-out old authority on Watergate — meant to say John Dean when he said Nixon.

Now, as to we have any evidence that Obama would want the IRS used for retribution, Obama once joked about using the machinery of the IRS against his enemies:
At his Arizona State University commencement speech [in May 2009], Mr. Obama noted that ASU had refused to grant him an honorary degree, citing his lack of experience, and the controversy this had caused. He then demonstrated ASU's point by remarking, "I really thought this was much ado about nothing, but I do think we all learned an important lesson. I learned never again to pick another team over the Sun Devils in my NCAA brackets. . . . President [Michael] Crowe and the Board of Regents will soon learn all about being audited by the IRS."

The quote is technically correct; Bernstein is saying someone said something, so it gets a single quote around it. Now, whether Bernstein is -accurately- quoting someone is a different issue, and if he misquoted/made up a quote, that would be a reason to have not used the quote in the story to begin with.

Despite mashing them together, Bernstein's assertion of knowledge is a very different kind of argument than the pettifoggery of "we have no evidence of any such thing."

What Bernstein thinks we know -- an accepted wisdom -- is in some ways the opposite of lack of evidence. The former is an argument from authority. The latter is an argument from ignorance.

Bernstein should cast his mind back. Why, if knowing is sufficient, did he spend so much energy tracking down evidence?

The post, entitled “Behind the curtain: a brief history of Romney’s donors,” singled out VanderSloot for being a ”litigious, combative and a bitter foe of the gay rights movement.”

Two months later, the IRS informed VanderSloot he and his wife were going to be audited, Strassel reported. However, I see no reason for the White House to be idle on this. Jay Carney should be announcing that several IRS employees have been sent home, with or without pay, pending the Congressional investigation or some internal Administration investigation. This should be followed up in the coming week with firings and resignations.

Before you set out to regulate businesses, you must first keep a clean establishment yourself. If "mistakes were made", people should lose their jobs for mistakes like this.

I actually do question whether he gave the orders. This is almost the opposite of "A Few Good Men", where the Marines probably couldn't shit, and definitely couldn't pull a Code Red w/o the orders of their officers, and notably their commander (Jack Nicholson - in the classic scene where he tells Tom Cruise that he can't handle the truth).

I think that President Obama looks more and more like a figurehead President. He enjoys the perks, like his own wide bodied jets, helicopters, a record number of days playing golf, the big house, a private retreat, etc., and will do the meet and greet, but is it. Not the behind-the-scenes of an Eisenhower, but rather, allowing the political operatives who got him elected and reelected free rein to run the country as they see fit. I think that this was most obvious first term when the departments were seemingly divided up by Democratic Party constituency.

Sure, there could be some sort of implication thing going on, with the President thinking out loud that someone not being around might be nice, and, voila, they disappear, thanks to zealous underlings. But, President Obama seems almost totally disinterested in governing. That is for underlings to do. His job, as I think he sees it, is to raise the money, appear Presidential, stay out of the way, and to enjoy the perks.

One thing we know about Obama is that he is not terribly bright (legal background notwithstanding). It was amazingly stupid to joke about using the IRS precisely because this sort of thing might happen. Smart Presidents don't say such obviously stupid things (toss in "I won" with that as well; reckon he's telling McConnell and Boehner that now?).

But I will grant there can be a fine line between a "safe" POTUS joke and a reckless one. We didn't end up bombing the Soviet Union. Similarly, Obama's would have been safe if there never was an IRS scandal. But there is. Obama should have learned from Reagan's mistake. It's not like he wasn't an adult at the time.

Someone should write a handbook for incoming Presidents detailing the stupid mistakes of their predecessors (such as Lincoln's use of the word "blockade"). Required reading between election and inauguration. It's a difficult enough job as it is.

Let me clarify - I don't think that all of the departments and agencies are running amok, due to lack of oversight, but, rather, that some of the smaller, maybe less important ones, were handed over to extremists representing certain identifiable Democratic Party constituencies. And, the biggest, most important ones are being essentially run out of the West Wing by Obama's closest minions. I really do believe now that Hillary! was mostly out of the loop throughout her stint as Secretary of State, with most of the major decisions being made in the White House, but likely not by Obama himself. I think that she agreed to the deal, of being Secretary in name only, in order to burnish her resume for her next run for the Presidency. Her problem here is that when things blow up, as they did with Benghazi, she is left without much cover. Pointing out that she didn't get critical messages sent directly to her, and wasn't involved in the decision making, as being too low down, doesn't cut it. They were her people, and they died as a result of decisions and actions taken in her name, or at least on her watch.

BTW - AG Holder has tried the same sort of "below my pay grade" argument with all the Fast and Furious memos that were sent to him along the way. He seems, so far, to have weathered this better than Hillary!, but maybe only because he used that excuse first. And, only one or two Americans died as a result, and they were low level law enforcement officers, and so were presumably expendable, unlike a politically appointed ambassador.

The thing is, is that Obama really doesn't seem to spend much time or energy governing. He skipped over half his PDB briefings the first three or four years of his Presidency. He often has only one or two official functions scheduled a day, and seems to spend almost as much time playing golf and basketball as he does actually running the government. Contrast this with many of his predecessors who were typically booked solid from 8-5 or so seven days a week. Many days Obama doesn't have more than an hour or two of official business booked, and even then, it often isn't until late morning.

So, back to the night of 9/11/12 - from all that we have heard so far, he seemed almost supremely indifferent. His priority was the fund raising trip the next day, and not the action happening in Libya that night.
