Rebooting the Tea Party.

The outrageous persecution of the Tea Party is an opportunity.

Take some advice, Tea Party people:

The Tea Party has been demonized in the last few years. Crazy, violent, racist, stupid... whatever.

Let's see how well these people leverage the persecution experience into a new image.

I suspect they will have a hard time. Why would they know how to exploit a serious crisis like the masters? They were victimized, but can they be the new victims that everyone wants to embrace?

The path of the valuable successful conservative is not one that includes seeking adoration, membership or recognition. They need it to succeed, but unlike the progressive it's not really what they are about. They work, they help others, they mind their own business until they need to do otherwise to save themselves and their way of life, and then once they feel safe again they go back to who they are. They will never get the cultural high fives that the left does, and they don't care to.

I doubt it, because being a victim isn't appealing to conservatives. One of the central tenets of conservatism and libertarianism is self reliance and responsibility for ones actions. Consequently it's not in our nature to play the victim (even when we are one). We pride ourselves on not blaming others for our misfortunes.

Tea Party started as the traditionalists peacefully petitioning their Government Officials in Town hall meetings the officials had set up to sell ObamaCare, to simply tell the truth about its cost quadrupling and Death Panels meant for them.

A few courageous speakers only got angry after the Senators and Representatives insisted on lying through their teeth.

So to the DC Dems they are forever the essence of insane people expecting a self governing America.

I think the IRS scandal offers them the opportunity to rebut all the crazy characterisations of them as "racist" and whatnot. Because the narrative is beautifully simple:

Concerned citizens in favour of lower taxes and simpler tax code persecuted by tax collectors.

The fact that the IRS was the one doing the persecuting reinforces the actual unifying theme between the various Tea Party groups (that they're fed up with paying so much tax for crappy service) and implicity pushes back on the paranoid fantasies spun by the press and the academy -- that they're about "white supremacy" or whatever.

Re: garage:

That was kind of the whole point of the improper audits here, wasn't it? The IRS wasn't so keen about collecting zero taxes from them, was it?

In any event, though, I'd think that as a fervent Obama booster you'd want to acknowledge that IRS bureaucrats might have an institutional interest in suppressing political activity directed at reducing taxes and hence reducing the power of the IRS. It provides a perfectly logical reason that tax collectors would be out to harass the Tea Party that doesn't require a moustache-twirling political operative from the White House or the Democratic Party.

Of course, it doesn't do anything to explain the harassment of Jewish and pro-life groups we've also been hearing about, but I don't think those have been admitted by the IRS yet.

Turn the tables over. Corruption affects the poor most of all. If you want to help the poor, the needy, then you have to fight corruption.

Corrupt politicians despise the poor, hate the helpless, condemn the orphans, and rob the widows.

They need to leave power and government needs to be reformed so as to weed out the path to wealth through politics.

It's a message the Tea Party started with. They need to focus on it still.

I know you're not that thick.

(a) organisers were harassed with improper questions about their family members etc. etc. That's an invasion of their privacy, and a clear harm. That the IRS couldn't find any grounds to deny their applications doesn't make that injury go away -- it makes the IRS's behaviour more egregious. => harm

(b) a number of the groups, faced with the clearly improper questioning, withdrew their applications. => harm.

(c) the applications were delayed for years, interfering with these organisations' ability to function and achieve their purpose. => harm

I don't doubt there were some that were held up. But the imbalance being reported in the news now is pretty striking:

WASHINGTON -- In February 2010, the Champaign Tea Party in Illinois received approval of its tax-exempt status from the IRS in 90 days, no questions asked.

That was the month before the Internal Revenue Service started singling out Tea Party groups for special treatment. There wouldn't be another Tea Party application approved for 27 months.

In that time, the IRS approved perhaps dozens of applications from similar liberal and progressive groups, a USA TODAY review of IRS data shows
.

Yes, that's right -- 100% of Tea Party related applications were put on hold for over two years.

The Tea Party cannot separate "social issues" from "economic issues."

The social issues are the cause of the economic issues. The breakdown of family is the cause of the increase in the size of government.

When there's no family there's a constituency for more government. Children with single parents need help with school. Young people with no family need help to pay for college. Middle aged people need help taking care of their children. Old people need pensions. I really don't fault liberals for trying to cope with these problems.

I see the health care debate and the preschool-at-age-three debate as symptoms more than anything else. Liberals fail to see the causes of these problems, although moments of clarity occasionally poke through. They are sticking their thumb in the dike.

We can't address the economic issues or the size of government without addressing the problems unleashed by a 40% illegitimacy rate and a declining and aging population.

When we dismiss "social issues" as the province of religious conservatives we aren't being serious about what challenges we must overcome. If we feel that the electorate can't be bothered to talk about our real problems then what's the point?

In that April 2012 interview, I questioned President Obama on several topics: the Buffet Rule, his public remarks about the Supreme Court before the ruling on the Affordable Care Act. I also asked why he wasn’t doing more to help Sen. Claire McCaskill who at that time was expected to lose. The Obama interview caught fire and got wide-spread attention because I questioned his spending.

So instead of talking about "re-booting" the Tea Party, which is really just a name to call the people who have been paying attention and are alarmed by what they see, the focus should be on the re-boot of this broken, shambling fucked up nation. We have the blue print. Do we have the will?

Odd how this keeps happening to those who make life even slightly uncomfortable for Obama, isn't it?

Except it turns out he was in trouble with the IRS before the interview.

“To be fair, I should disclose that my issues with the IRS preceded that interview (with Obama) by several years,”

No. Nearly 50% of the people in this nation are either non-contributory or net-negative contributory to the economy. They rely on and vote for redistributive change in order to avoid accepting responsibility for their fate. The responsible liberty message of the "Tea Party" will not appeal to their sensitivities.

The opportunity primarily exists for people who offer false promises of material, physical, and ego instant (or immediate) gratification without perceived consequences. They will continue to enjoy the favor of the "47%", and the opportunistic individuals who exploit them, in order to advance their political, economic, and social standing.

The only hope for the "Tea Party" is that there are enough Americans remaining in America who will choose to embrace the ideals expressed in The Declaration of Independence. Most notably our unalienable Rights to Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness. That people will respect individual dignity, and seek suitable compromises to promote the general Welfare, while limiting progressive corruption.

You've been fooled by the media and left-leaning politicians and pundits. They've told you what you believe to be true, and that's enough for you.

So give me an example of someone really affiliated with a tea party group, who did or said something that makes you think this way. One rule though - do it without looking up a link to fit your views; if you have to find a link, then you're admitting you only feel this way because someone told you to.

Joe Biden, America's Putin said...

From May 18, 2009

Barack Obama owes his presidency in no small part to the power of rhetoric. It's too bad he doesn't appreciate the damage that loose talk can do to America's tax system, even as exploding federal deficits make revenues more important than ever.

At his Arizona State University commencement speech last Wednesday, Mr. Obama noted that ASU had refused to grant him an honorary degree, citing his lack of experience, and the controversy this had caused. He then demonstrated ASU's point by remarking, "I really thought this was much ado about nothing, but I do think we all learned an important lesson. I learned never again to pick another team over the Sun Devils in my NCAA brackets. . . . President [Michael] Crowe and the Board of Regents will soon learn all about being audited by the IRS."

Just a joke about the power of the presidency. Made by Jay Leno it might have been funny. But as told by Mr. Obama, the actual president of the United States, it's hard to see the humor. Surely he's aware that other presidents, most notably Richard Nixon, have abused the power of the Internal Revenue Service to harass their political opponents. But that abuse generated a powerful backlash and with good reason. Should the IRS come to be seen as just a bunch of enforcers for whoever is in political power, the result would be an enormous loss of legitimacy for the tax system.

I don't necessarily disagree with you on this...although usually I don't melt down at something said or done here - exception was reaction to Titus's comment the other day. Normally however I'm not saying righties comments are horrbily offensive to me, they are not. But I'm usually pointing out that IMO they are problematical or offensive for indpendents and moderates.

I also know and will always say that not every rightie, TP, winger, libertarian, Repub, or Dem, or liberal for that matter speaks for others. The PERCEPTION is that they do, however. Again particularly among moderates and indpendents IMO.

Both parties/sides have the problem but I believe righties have suffered more from having extremists tied to them than the other way around. I'm not claiming that's fair but I'm saying IMO that's the reality.

Take my opinion for what it's worth. As you say I'm a lefty (I'm not really but I lean more that way). I don't claim I know it all. But I do have TP friends, I like them, some of their ideas are very worthwhile, but I think they attract some people who are self-defeating.

This is not the reason. It's a bigger problem because the media is relentlessly negative when describing the TP, including hyping nonexistent accusations of racism. On the other hand they focus on the idealism rather than the radicalism and economic illiteracy of the the OWS crowd.

And of course people like phx fully support this bias and misrepresentation, otherwise they would cite facts about the TP rather than the media coverage.

From the propagandists link:

The report blasted the FBI for spying on antiwar activists, animal-rights groups, and environmentalists, calling them improper "terror" investigations "unreasonable and inconsistent with FBI policy." Among those targeted were the antiwar Thomas Merton Center, the Quakers, the Catholic Worker, Greenpeace, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals and an individual Quaker peace activist. According to the Inspector General, there was "little or no basis" for the investigations.

Complete and utter bullshit.

Page 60, OIG Report:

we found no evidence Berry was sent to the event to monitor the first amendment activities of the Merton center or anyone else because of their anti-war activities. We found no evidence the FBI ever opened any kind of investigation in which the Merton Center was named a subject. We also found no evidence that the FBI's attendance was part of any unofficial investigation of anti-war activity in Pittsburgh or that the FBI was focusing on the Merton Center or others because of their anti-war views

And the final conclusion of the OIG report (P.190) said:

"the evidence did not indicate that the FBI targeted any of the groups for investigation on the basis of their First Amendment activities."
