"He says if he can't live by the rules he enforces he has no business enforcing the rules."

And it's not abnormal for our us to use progressive discipline with employees who are not following safety requirements or exercising sound judgement. Sometimes that formal accountability includes suspensions for very serious violations that could have lead to a death or serious injury. At the same time, we also believe that the a critical component to safety performance is a fair, open, and honest climate, especially in terms of safety accountability. Over my 7 years in this company, I've seen numerous manager and VPs issue themselves written consultations and even suspensions for safety violations. In fact, most managers are much harder on themselves than they are on their team members. It goes a long way when an organization (or society) is flat in terms of accountability.
