"Investigators believe they have identified a suspect in the Boston Marathon bombings..."

"The breakthrough came from analysis of video from a department store near the site of the second explosion. Video from a Boston television station also contributed to the progress, said the source, who declined to be more specific but called it a significant development."

AND: "An official briefed on the Boston Marathon bombing investigation said today that authorities have an image of a suspect carrying, and perhaps dropping, a black bag at the second bombing scene on Boylston Street, outside of the Forum restaurant."

OR: Not.

CNN describes suspect as "dark skinned male" and the left is going ballistic on Twitter.

This is a bad, bad day for the left since not only will the suspect not be a white male, but the Assault Weapons Ban & Toomey/Manchin are going down in flames.

(CNN) -- [Breaking news update at 1:47 p.m. Wednesday ]

An arrest has been made in the Boston bombings investigation based on two videos showing images of the suspect, a federal law enforcement source told CNN's Fran Townsend.

Chip Ahoy said...

When authorities apprehended the suspect he had already been captured, bound, his bottom legs blown off so that the tibia and fibula were exposed and hanging by muscle material, set upon a wheelchair, rolled around for an hour and left to die. Authorities are investigating the unusual cruelty and the possibility of networking sites and crowd sourcing affecting the sequence of events.

We certainly wouldn't want to jump to any conclusions about how much sleep the suspect got before setting up the explosives. Are you suggesting jet lag will be the alibi? Or maybe he/she was disgruntled because the race kept him/her awake?

I agree with Slate (to an extent). There will be different set of ramifications based on the suspect. In ascending order:

1. OWS affiliate. Almost no fall-out. There will be a boycott by the media;
2. Crazy. Much finger pointing and posturing but little fall-out;
3. Rightwinger. A deafening scream from the left and media. Increased gun control and more damage to the Tea PArt and Republican brands;
4. Islamic terrorist. Huge impact on our freedoms and much legislation. We'll have bags searched in department stores, movie theatres, and maybe randown TSA searches on the street.

I think the confusion involves the difference between "arrest" and "in custody." From what I can tell from various, including local, sources the latter appears to be the case. CNN appears to have conflated the two (or maybe their source did and they didn't double-check rigorously enough).

Or maybe authorities aren't ready to release exact status at present.

Regardless, we'll find out when we find out...to state the obvious.

This technological fact is pretty amazing. The numbers of photos and videos from many different angles makes it difficult to "hide in the crowd".

Plus, the hive-mind of the internet is also amazing. The numbers of people who are putting information together and gleaning clues, many of them the same, from the multitudes of digitized images, is something that would not have happened in the time frame that is happening now. Instant communication in the hive-mind. Sometimes for the bad, in spreading falsehoods. This time for the good.

rcommal said...

I'm following two, live, continuous local sources, one streaming TV, one streaming radio (different affiliates, as well). (This is in addition to various reports by print/internet media.)

One of them is sticking to "person of interest" and/or "a suspect has been identified" and just said they've been told that there is no suspect in custody, and that there has been no arrest.

The other is stressing they cannot confirm reports of arrest and that in fact they are being told there has been no arrest. However, they are persisting, so far, with "person in custody."

----

We really know nothing for sure, yet, as to what's going on. For all we know...solely for example, and for theoretical example, ONLY...there could be a material witness being held AND there could be a suspect who was identified.

I mean, this is how this stuff goes. It's hard to parse it, and often enough authorities want it hard to parse. (I'm not taking a swipe at authorities by saying the latter; I'm merely stating a reality. I have no idea if that's the case in this instance.)

---

Both local sources have made allusions to a possibility that someone may or may not be expected to show up at a federal court some time today. Way too sketchy to even try and parse that one.

Bill I used to listen to Rush everyday, it only made me more of a liberal.

I mean, if you have 3 lbs of C4 and surround that with 15 lbs of flash suppressors, bayonet mounts, bipods, and say twenty 15 round clips and set it off, You Could Kill or Maim Hundreds!!

Whereas a bomb using 20 ten-round loaded clips as shrapnel would hurt less children!

I can't make the Inga Zone load.

I'm sure there's a joke or something there.

That's pretty much what makes sense, Darrell.

Darrell, yes that was Widmerpool, in the Prudential building.

I would assume the police had multiple cell jammers--around each location where they were defusing bombs (five of them, according to reports). The range isn't very great, so it depends on how many were out there.

rcommal said...

From the note, it seems that phones could be used, then they couldn't. Then later they could. Given that the guy was also talking about moving around quite a bit, the jammers explanation would seem reasonable and in accordance with conflicting reports from ordinary people in the area.

Maybe one of those "which part of the elephant is being touched" sort of situations... .

I meant with an open mind. If you had listened with an open mind you would not have responded that way. You would have said something "I didn't agree with most of his stuff but he can be witty and entertaining sometimes."

Cody Jarrett said...

I used to watch Maddow fairly often, until she took her hard left turn into utter smugness (I can stand a lot of stuff, but smug makes me almost homicidal) and, except for the sheer nutbaggery of him, I kind of admire Olbermann. I mean, KO of a few years ago. Not the complete horse's ass we have now.

I know a guy who was working there at the time O'Reilly and Olbermann started, and he confirmed for me that it really was kind of a toss up who'd do what, that Olbermann almost went down the conservative road and became the Fox News hero.

How hilarious would that be?

I hate O'Reilly.

Understandable. I've used to regularly listen to Chris Matthews and Ed Schultz who solidified my conservative viewpoint.

Matthews is especially enjoyable to watch especially when he gets on one of his 'aren't white people horrible' rants. Self loathing at its finest.

Because CEO they are usually the most accurate, as they were on Monday, as they have been today.

Frankly, Al Jazeera is more accurate than most domestic cable news organizations. At least on international news, which is stunning.

Olbermann's MLB blog was really good. I don't know if he's been doing it this year.

EdBUTCHER, that was actually kind of funny.

Does it get any worse than Special Ed? Does he still have a show or did they give it to that kid who looks like Rachel?

Yeah, but cleaning the spittle off the inside of the TV screen is damn difficult.

LOL. At least Hannity really believes what he's saying though. That's the best I can come up with.

Okay, now tell us how you hate Special Ed, or how Rachel makes you nauseous. C'mon...you can do it!

No bet, Mike. Although if we get edbutcher involved, I bet she would just to spite him.

Im convinced he takes a couple nips of the bottle pre show because there are times I swear he's just short of blitzed.

I don't think there's anything more creepy and disgusting than MSNBC. The lies and half-truths, the agenda pushing, the speculation-as-news, the leg tingling. It's all so gross.

Look around the web for the surveillance video's. One guy who has a big black pack back, which looks like the one found with one of the bombs, then later doesn't have, is distinctly Middle Eastern looking. OTOH a guy holding a backpack, which looks like the one found with the other bomb, is a disheveled looking white guy. So maybe everyone can get their 'wish' as to the color of the attackers.

The media just doesn't know anything significant yet for sure, but feels compelled to report continuously. I really don't think they've done such a terrible job given the situation their managements put them in (none has the courage at a management level to just say after 10 minutes each night, 'that's all we know about this story that's really important, now we'll fill you in on the earthquake in Iran', or whatever)

Jeff Flake is a hard core fiscal conservative whose vote against TARP won him big points with opponents of massive government spending.

Look around the web for the surveillance video stills. One guy who has a big black back pack that appears to be one of the two of which remnants were found, then later doesn't have it, is of distinctly Middle Eastern appearance. But a disheveled looking white guy is carrying in front of him a back pack which looks like the remains of the other one found. So maybe everyone will get their 'wish' as to the color of the attackers.
I don't think the major media has done such a bad job on this story, given the stupid constraint their managements impose on them. They don't have enough actually new and important information to fill the vast quantities of time they devote to stories like this, but none of the managements have the courage to just cut it short and cover something else. But I think they've generally resisted the temptation to go into nonsensical speculation, certainly to compared to Everyman on the internet at least.
