Certainly I don't begrudge Zeus a mighty feast, but whither Abby? Wouldn't that sweet girl enjoy a succulent bone, too?

We lived a block from a butcher shop when I was growing up. We had three happy dogs.

I've heard that you shouldn't give bones that have been cooked to dogs.

Zeus is the old man?

Where are Bingo and Joey?

PS Given the great hardships of the sequester, is anyone outraged over the fact that, in their second term, the Os are averaging a vacation a month?

Those bones would make good bone broth, with a few more thrown in. But I'm sure Zeus enjoyed them more.

Good to know that was not a fully cooked bone.

Inga we must have been raised by mothers of the same generation. That is exactly what my mom does to this day. She's an indestructible 86 years old.

Wyo Sis, cooking bones gives you so much great nutritious stuff! The gelatin it forms is great for joints and your gut. I add a half cup of vinegar to the water ( helps leach the minerals out of the bones)and let it sit an hour before cooking for at least 24 hours on low simmer. Lots of bay leaves, parsley, even some turmeric and coriander seeds. Of course an onion, garlic too.

==========

Facebook is insufferable today because of this.

Something related that I am not going to do: tell my Facebook friends to unfriend me if they disagree with me, to the thunderous "likes" of all my hive-minded friends..

Freeman,

Agreed. The moral preening of many of my Facebook friends is nauseating.

Gay marriage is mostly about how enlightened some people are.

Thanks for the info! I heard one isn't supposed to give chicken bones to dogs, but after one of our dogs ate about 14 of our chickens, I decided that was silly, and was throwing out old chicken carcases to them.

No more.

According to the USDA, you aren't supposed to eat rare meat. The thickest part should be raised to 145 degrees F.

Thanks to a recent Althouse post, last night I purchased "Stiff" by Mary Roach in Kindle format and paid $3.95 to have it available unabridged in audio too. 304 pages = 8 hours of audio.

After years of internet, I have a hard time sitting and just reading a book to completion. It just demands too much attention. I need multiple stimulants simultaneously. I usually read on the internet while listening to music or radio and sometimes have the TV on as well. If I'm watching a movie, I can't just sit there and watch it. I have to research the location, the actors, their lives, the background of the story, etc. while I'm watching it. This may be a guy thing - I don't know.

Anyway I just finished the "Stiff" audio book exactly 24 hours after starting. I listened last night while doing chores, walking dogs, reading, and some in bed, although that was a fail withing minutes. Then today while driving and at work while doing spreadsheets and CAD work, and Althouse. Then I finished tonight while shopping at Home Depot. One day to finish a book that would have taken me probably forever, and likely never finished. I have started reading about dozen books recently and I have not finished any of them. I've done audio books before, and now I realize they are the only ones I finish. Anyway, I really enjoyed it, and it was very easy to fit into my fabulous and exciting life as an Althouse commenter.

Now, do I say "I've read that book "Stiff", or do I have to say I listened to it. Nobody is gonna think I'm an intellectual for listening to books. I'm trying to get some respect here, but I don't want it to take a lot of time. I need my free time for "Here Comes Honey Boo Boo".

I am more sympathetic than I should like to think, of those who murder molesters in their tracks.

After all, or not (just after we stopped of consciously thinking of it) if not murdered dead in their tracks by good men, who kills the evil?

The recent New Yorker story linked at the Ace of Spades has stuck with me.

I want all those molesters dead, and that want is certainly a result of my own failings. Were I to have attended such an elite institution as Horace Mann then surely my unnuancedness would be taught.

You got the book into your head, technically it's a book, books are read, ergo you read the book.

I feed all my rescue dogs pretty much nothing but raw meat from the grocery store. Same stuff people eat, but raw. I mostly go to a Mexican market that has a carniceria, because they have a lot more variety of meats than a traditional American market, and are usually cheaper too. My dogs get chicken legs, breasts, ground beef, pork necks, chops, kidneys, liver, tripe, everything.

They love it all, but their absolute favorite is beef ribs like that. All raw. The ribs are the only meat where there is anything left when they are done. They chew the bones down but there is still a bone left. All other bones like chicken, pork, lamb, or turkey get chew up and swallowed completely gone. Meaty bones make dogs happy, content and strip away stress. They are like books for a dog, and a ride in the car with the endless parade of smells is like TV, or a movie for them.

Nah Baggy is not just a guy thing. I multitask all day. It's too boring simply doing one thing at a time. As for researching authors or actors, I do that too. I could research something I'm interested in for hours. Lots of amazing health and nutrition info on the inter tubes now.

Rush cited a story today about how the polls purporting to show support of SSM among the populace have been heavily sampled favoring supporters of SSM.

I don't know that many gays, but other than the mass media elite, I don't think that there is a groundswell of support for this.

I just don't see it.

If you're wondering about the cost of feeding your dog raw meat and bones. I spend about $1.50/day/60# dog. I feed them once a day, 2-3% of the body weight I want them at. Even quality dog food is made mostly from grain with some meat that was too poor quality to be fed to humans, diseased, or parts not good enough for other uses, rendered to death at high heat. Besides it's boring to eat. For more info, Google "raw feeding dogs". There's a whole community out there of nut jobs like me cutting up bloody body parts. Aaaaa, hahahahahahah! Wonder why I'm single? The dogs got hungry.

A majority of states have laws prohibiting same sex marriage and more are going there every day. These laws are passed on referendums which shows the exact opposite of a groundswell of support for same sex marriage.

I don't think there should ever be anger or bigotry toward anyone. We might reluctantly tolerate the fact that children are bullies, and we might love children who are bullies, but we don't leave it at that. We don't excuse bullying because it makes the bully feel good. We say no, that is destructive and we don't allow it because it has negative consequences.

What would Buckley have made of this evil?

Steve Barton over at one of my favorite websites, nalert.blogspot.com is a Buckley hater, as fearful of Skull and Bones as anyone who has ever walked the face of the Earth, yet Steve has a great website everyone should visit.

I ain't got the answers. You all, thank God, have shown me repeatedly that, and it is invaluable information.

Yea, the general advice is to not give cooked bones to dogs, but I think this is primarily poultry bones. I only feed raw poultry, but before being told this, I fed my dogs cooked bones all my life. I never had one have a problem, but there have been dogs that have died from swallowing bones, as well as toys, stones and just about anything else. There have even been dogs that have died from inhaling kibble into their lungs. What are gonna do? I do try to avoid cooked poultry bones, but I don't sweat anything other than having my dogs bite someone or each other. That will ruin their day for sure.

I am horribly sad to say I am stupid and wrong.

Mr. Steve Bartin is the Buckley non-fan we all should read every day for most reasons not ill.

Mr. Bartin is a genius, and his dislike for my hero (I consider William Frank Buckley Junior more than just a hero and in many ways I understand how shallow my understanding of man-Buckley-and not, is unworthy of much anything and maybe something less.

My heart sank a little bit earlier today when my eyeballs accidentally read justice Kennedy saying, "we have 5 years of experience to weight against 2,000 years or more."

Yes, Justice Kennedy, a little bit more than that. So let's say you spent most of your time with law then, we can expect a compensating display of brilliant constitutional grasp.

When visiting a couple of weeks ago, I gave my mother's two beautiful (and digestively sensitive) Boston Terriers a beef femur bone each, after I had simmered the bones for 30 hours to make a beef stock/bone broth for my own consumption. I carefully monitored the dogs and, in the end, they mostly spent their bone-hours extracting the marrow and gnawing on the soft bone-ends.

I haven't yet tried giving them raw bones, which I am sure they'll enjoy.

To the Enjoy-the-decline types, that say history shows repeatedly that acceptance of sexual deviance indicates cultural decline, I ask, "Really?"

Are you so sure?

How are you not sure it is proof of cultural strengthening?

You're just so doggone sure of yourself and your histories, and yet you accept into your life and use, and take for granted everyday beneficial objects that started with strange ideas that you would not have imagined back there in kindergarden, I used kindergarden to give you enough time to fill up the span of your own life with amazing new wonders that have built your world outward so splendidly.

You're just so doggone sure this feels like an attack on a trusted institution so that save marriage laws are hastily enacted to prevent encroachment and further erosion. Good for you. Wouldn't do to go speeding without brakes.

But you are scientists too and believe in evolution, and you see with your own eyes and marvel as your own civilization becomes more intricately bewilderingly complex so that now twenty-first century marriage stands very high indeed compared to marriages historically and that is even with the disruption of societal reorganization caused by the historically precipitate augmentation of women's liberties so late in human evolution, all throughout history and all across the globe, and now with its intricate family and community ties ever more complete and complex and more sure than any time in history.

Conservatives see homosexuality as biological flaw and should not be encouraged by State, as liberals see Down's syndrome babies as biological flawed and unnecessary social expense.

Like it or not, Individualists, you live in an advanced complex entangled society.

Whatever current or archaic notion is held of marriage, a big dress with fine ritual, a cake, a ring, a promise, a future, a new family with children, or not, the twenty-first century expression of marriage is not eroded, it is not damaged, nor is it challenged, on the contrary, it is strengthened by inclusion and conversely weakened by exclusion.

Bigots.

kidding.

Vicki gets a raw beef marrow bone stripped of meat by the supermarket, from time to time. I freeze them and then she gets to spend time working the marrow out.

Best chopped three or four to a bone, both as to quantity and ability to reach the marrow.

I used to feed them daily but the supermarket stopped putting them out much.

Cottage cheese stops diarrhea, incidentally, in case the dog isn't used to the diet.

Cooked bones aren't supposed to be great, second hand knowledge has it, owing to a propensity to splinter that raw bones don't have.

WVReb,
With this administration, who knows, but there is said to be a paragraph in our extradition treaties that says iour rules on double jeopardy will be respected.

Also someone on van Susteren last night said the Italian High Court has not ordered any re-trial (yet), but wants a review of the evidence that was excluded at her last trial. It is possible they just want to light a fire under the police for the quality of their forensic work.

The best part about feeding only raw meat and bones to your dogs is at the other end. They poop about 1/3 as much. Little turds with the consistency of biscotti, that come out nearly dry and turn to white powder in just a few hours - mostly calcium bone meal leached (Erika) of all their liquid and nutrition. They poop dry pieces of chalk that have very little smell. Most of the dog food (grains) go right through your dog undigested and come back to you disgusting. Garbage in - worse garbage out.

My morning drive takes me through a very poor, broken down part of the city. I was at a stop light, this morning, and there was a sickly-looking old man walking down the sidewalk. He was crippled in some sort of way at the hip that caused him to take huge, grotesque strides and swing his arms in huge arcs as if he couldn’t bend his knees.

Walking ahead of him was a little terrier. It was one of those scruffy little terriers like the ones that travel with the hobos in the movies. It was about two years old, full of health and energy and in the prime of life. Its little legs were a blur, they were pumping so fast and it was really cute.

It was wearing a sweater. In fact, I could see that the old man had dressed it in two sweaters to protect it from the winter’s cold. And the two of them walking together struck me as beautiful, in a sad sort of way. Life had to be hard for both of them, and there they were, best friends, getting through life the best they can.

And it was only then that I noticed that the poor, sickly old man didn’t have a coat, didn’t have gloves, he wasn’t wearing a hat. But he had a best friend to take care of, and I'm sure the little terrier repaid the kindness, in his way.

Please be well, everybody, and take care of each other.
