Hope that everyone buying products from Althouse's Amazon portal feels great about contributing financially to someone who speculated that a brilliant black neurosurgeon was incapable of writing his own speech.

I know that I would not want to directly contribute to the promulgation of such UGLY sentiments, although I'm sure the pageviews indirectly contribute.

Meade said...

Did she speculate that he was incapable of writing his own speech or did she wonder if another party or parties contributed to the writing of the speech?

You embarrass yourself by not reading/thinking/commenting more carefully although I'm sure you enjoy the attention nevertheless.

These make me wonder if I can set up my own blog, monetize it, and get discounts on everything I purchase (by funnelling the money back to me).

Do we know who purchased the Head & Shoulders? I bet Cedarford has bad dandruff.

"Carson is a pediatric neurosurgeon, not an economist or a health care policy wonk or a speechwriter. We don't know what contribution he made to the writing of the speech. I don't know how that speech got into his hands, but once he had that position on the dais at the prayer breakfast, those hands were very valuable hands in which to put a speech. Who is the speechwriter? If it was Carson himself, alone, I'd be extremely impressed. And extremely surprised."

Reading/thinking/commenting more carefully?

I can read what she posted for the entire world to see. And I am capable of drawing my conclusions about what those words above mean. And I find them infinetely more "ugly" than a video clip about an Obamaphone.

But hey, you want to keep those Amazon bucks flowing, spin away.

Speaking of scalps, I think you are splitting hairs Meade by being so defensive. IYCSTH,SOOTK.

Meade said...

Shanna, I don't see anything in the Operating Agreement that prohibits that. Still, we choose to make our Amazon purchases through the portals of other bloggers we want to show our appreciation for, like Instapundit.

Freder, how do we know you aren't really Cedarford?

Mom-Jeans, your conclusion is incorrect. My advise: rethink.

Are these "Purchases of the Day" rank ordered where the "potential embarrassment factor" of the buyer is given at least 65 times more weight than the monetary earnings derived?

Need me that "Clinical Strength".

Are there actually dandruff clinics?

I'll bet the I.R.S. loves these easy-to-capture daily declarations of gross profit.

I'd be surprised if Althouse isn't already 1099'd, which raises the question of what is and is not a deductible business-related expense, especially if your life experience is part of the blog's subject matter.

Also, taking in ad revenue may exclude any coverage afforded by a standard home owners/umbrella policy for blog-related personal injury claims like defamation.

Instapundit once linked to a good article on the business aspects of blogging.

Shanna, I don't see anything in the Operating Agreement that prohibits that.

I believe that they have a filter or a way to know that YOU are buying for yourself through your own portal. And yes. Amazon will 1099 you on your income.

Personally, I wouldn't buy from someone who will announce my purchases...even if they are anonymous. Or from someone who nags, hectors and is all in your face about buying stuff. But, that's ok. I guess those pennies add up from elsewhere. You have my clicks to profit from.

The secret to good salesmanship is subtlety. You guys are about as subtle as a sledgehammer to the nuts.

I absolutely agree with President Mom Jeans on THIS one. Althouse had no idea how that speech got into his hands. Implying that Doctor Carson could not have possibly written that on his own. WHO IS THE SPEECH WRITER she asks. There is no other way to read this statement. She didn't think that Doctor Carson could write such a speech all by his little lonesome and must have had help. Insulting at the least and likely RACIST if it had been mentioned in the context of the Great and Grand Obama.

Meade to the rescue of his damsel in distress, heh..She knew what she was going. It was a two pronged attack - GOP is crazy to gush and this man is not worth gushing about, she said it herself in the comments.. ("going gaga over this man is embarrassing..").

Crap! I buy a specific anti-dandruff shampoo for my skin condition. Today ,I go to the store to stock up and it's nowhere to be found. Alas, it has been discovered to be some sort of hair restorer. Now you can't find it at a decent price anywhere, including Amazon.

No big secret: my approach seems to be effective as sales have been up nearly 160% since I started subtly swinging this purchase of the day sledgehammer. Caution: watch your nuts!

dbp said...

Yeah, it would be pretty amazing if a guy who has only written and had published 4-5 books and has been director of pediatric neurosurgury at Johns Hopkins for almost 30 years could write a good speech.

Meade & Althouse:

There's really no need to get so defensive when people criticize something Ann writes. She often writes ambiguously, perhaps on purpose to makes us benighted ones "think" -- patronizing, but acceptable, I suppose -- perhaps unintentionally. Sarcasm and satire are not always clear to a reader right away. And sometimes what is written can be interpreted in different ways by different people. (The second amendment is a good example of that). Cut your readers some slack, for goodness sake. Reading a blog is not the same as taking the SAT. We are not being graded on our comprehension so, I'm sorry, but we are not going to put that much effort into it.

I read that post about Dr. Carson out loud to my husband to get his opinion, and at the end where it says, "... And supremely surprised.", he responded, "Because he's black!??"

The fact that so many people reached the same conclusion should imply that maybe there was something wrong with the way it was written. And/or maybe it just proves that nowadays it is impossible to criticize a minority without being thought a racist. It has become a knee jerk response; a Pavlovian response. Bear that in mind the next time you feel the urge to accuse the GOP of being "ugly".

And for the record, I never thought Althouse was being racist; just tone-deaf, or playing some game with us. And I think PMJ is pulling your chain, perhaps to make a point.

Shanna said...

Yeah, it would probably not work. (not that I was really going to do anything anyway, just an idle thought).

I'm kind of with you on the other, as well, but it may be a personality thing. Some people don't enjoy being sold.

Inga: re boring nag...perhaps you could consider the purchase of a nice mirror from Amazon via the Althouse portal.

bagoh20 said...

I'll tell you what IS unfortunate. I heard the Carson speech, and thought: "now that's what the GOP needs a lot more of". I really liked it, heard a lot of other conservatives raving about him too, and talking about his speech. Then I came here, and heard for the first time that he was Black. How was I informed of this? By Althouse scolding me for foolishly gushing over him because he's Black and that's what conservatives do.

That's what's known as projection. I'm not the one who voted for the black guy with absolutely no qualifications to be President, no work experience, and not even a college transcript.

A low point, which is really saying something lately.

I'm not going through the Althouse portal anymore, because I think you guys don't need any more money. All this portal-flogging is in poor taste and is, frankly, embarrassing to watch. And I'm personally offended at how disrespectfully both of you treat your commenters, without whom you would have no blog and no lucrative portal and ad opportunities.

Dust Bunny Queen said...

@ Bago--- I think it would dependon the size of your rooms.

We just bought a 60 inch plasma hd tv for ourselves for Christmas and a nice looking mission oak stand/console for it to sit on. Our great room is pretty large so that if we want to see the screen from either the elevated kitchen [where I am a lot] or dining areas, anything smaller would be difficult to see. Sitting in the sunken living room section, 60" is pretty large but not too overwhelming since the couch and chair arrangements are about 12 feet from where the screen is positioned. We also bought a strong sound system to go with it so that we can have good quality sound in such a large room.

Actually, we use the system more for music during the day and to watch selected shows in the evening. Just finishing season 2 of Downton Abbey, looking forward to season 3... and getting ready for Game of Thrones. LOTS of really good shows available through Netflix, Amazon videos etc. Rarely do we watch news or much else on the TV

pm317 said...

DBQ, we got a 46" couple of weeks ago thinking it would be so big, but it looks small in our family room. Unlike the old box TV, we can't watch these from an angle or far. And with 46" some of the non-HD programs go back to a size that is smaller than our old TV..

Dust Bunny Queen said...

@ PM317

We went with the Plasma based on the recommendations of the people who worked in the appliance store. They said that THEY all owned plasmas for several reasons. Viewing angle range is better. http://www.ledvsplasma.com/led-vs-plasma/led-vs-plasma-viewing-angle/ Also the colors are more true to life. And better viewed in a low light environment. Not so bright, more subdued. Since we mostly view in the evening it seemed to be the best fit for us. Also go for the best 'refresh' rate you can.

I think the purchase of the day thing is entertaining.

I hate subtle selling. There could be some long, bullshit book review that no one ever would have written without an Amazon link, but I don't think that would be an improvement. I like the frankness and the fun of it being done this way.

(I'm sure that's a swing of the pendulum. Sometimes the subtle sell is in fashion, sometimes the plain sell.)

How would they know that if you were logged in to Amazon from another IP address and under a different name? And had things sent to a different address? If you wanted to go to the trouble you could do it. And it looks like it would be worth the trouble on bigger ticket items.

Yes. Which is why I thought she was playing some sort of game. It seemed odd to toss that accusation at conservatives. She made this a racial issue. Would she have thought the GOP were using Carson, if he were white?

Race aside, to accuse Dr. Carson of allowing himself to be a puppet for the GOP is an unfair insult to the man. And to accuse conservatives of going gaga over a black man after the way the left has idolized someone as unaccomplished as Obama, is a knee-slapper.

"Yeah, it would be pretty amazing if a guy who has only written and had published 4-5 books and has been director of pediatric neurosurgury at Johns Hopkins for almost 30 years could write a good speech."

I'm sure a specialist in surgery with a sideline writing inspirational books published by a company that specializes in Christian inspirational material could write a good speech containing material recommending a solution to the problem of funding health care, but I think he probably worked with advisers and speech writers on the occasion of standing next to the President and lecturing about that kind of material.

The President himself has speechwriters, so what's the big deal here? And I hope you're not among the righties who don't think Obama could have written "Dreams From My Father." I hope you're super-critical of all the doubters of that.

I believe my response to the Carson post yesterday will reflect that I took it to mean that he was not a policy wonk not that he was black. Though she may have overstated it I do think there is a tendency for conservatives and Pubs to latch on to blacks they perceive to be leaders who have achieved through hard work, intelligence and haven't gamed the Affirmative Action system-Alan Keyes, Michael Steele, Herman Cain, Condi Rice etc.

As to the Amazon portal thing, as one who in private correspondence encouraged Ann and Meade to make us more aware of the portal, who gives a crap. If you don't like it don't use it. But as for how that "speech got into his hands"? Let's ask Alex Jones to compare Carson's prose.

Althouse - give it a rest. You were wrong to think the doctor had a speechwriter and now you opine he needed advisers to help prepare him to speak about common sense topics in front of Obama?

I absolutely love the Smart TV. I now watch more online TV and movies than via cable. I especially enjoy the strange mostly unknown shows from the BBC, or ones that just never made it. It's also great to be able to watch episodes continuously to catch up on shows you never hooked into when they ran.

The big negative is watching the very same commercials over and over.

Shanna said...

Does this mean you have hulu? That is by far the thing I find most annoying about it!

Netflix has no commercials and is dipping their toes into original programming with House of Cards.

bagoh20 said...

Yep Shanna, Hulu. If you watch a whole season of a show, which is easily done in a couple nights, you will see the same commercial dozens of times. What's amazing is that I noticed even after that, sometimes I have no idea what the commercial is about - I so effectively tune it out, but I do remember the jingles. They are wasting their money and my time. As a mater of fact, I don't think I ever bought anything from a popup ad, or any online ad, and very rarely from a TV ad. Except Geico Insurance. I so liked their commercials that I did look them up to quote my coverage, and they ended up saving me a lot of money.

Okay, that is fine and certainly seems to be a backing-off from the implications of, "I don't know how that speech got into his hands..." which would imply it was basically handed to him.

I have not looked into the provenance of Obama's books enough to form an opinion about their authorship. His name is on them so my starting assumption is that he wrote them. The excerpts I have read here and there are of a quality that seem just as likely to hurt as burnish a reputation for good writing.
