"'Well-placed conservative voice' says Paul Ryan in line to replace Boehner."

Out with the old. In with the new.

Meade says: "It's time for some hope and change."

A standing no to the President is a good idea.

@rhardin I agree. I'd add the word: articulate in there too.

Time for Boehner to go. We need new thinking in government.

sakredkow said...

The American people will see a standing no as an inability of the Republican party to compromise, and that won't go well for the Republicans. You can cry it's not fair or not true all you want, IMO it won't make a difference.

Ruth Anne Adams said...

What else can one make of the election results but that America voted for the status quo...celebrity president, feckless Senate and resistant-to-spending House? Might as well have the leader be someone who can articulate the case and who will know that there's no good faith across the aisle.

Things aren't going "well" for the Republicans already. To hell with them - I want things to go well for the United ,States.

Please bring on Ryan.

Give Boehner a break. I blame the hardliners for all the intransigence that resulted in the singular electoral loss for my party this past November.

Besides, had not Angle, O'Donnell, Mourdock and that fabulous moron Akin run away with Senate nominations for seats they could never (and did never) win, Harry Reid would be a high-priced lobbyist in Washington right now instead of the pernicious pig that he is as Senate Majority Leader.

I say 'enough' to the circular firing squad and remind my T.P friends that nothing will change until and if (a big 'if' for most of their meager and flawed candidates) they win elective office.

Ryan, who couldn't even win his home town, sure why not?

Frankly I don't give a rip. I think most congressmen will be fine with a standing no. I know I expect nothing less of my Tea Party congressmen and I have told him so.

Obama can insult him at every SOTU. Ryan will be right there standing behind him.

Firefox also says there's malware. It also says that Google hasn't detected any problems on the site in the past 90 days. I think the warning is because people who do not like the politics of the site have falsely reported it.

When the boozy Boehner goes, he should take the rest of the old guard with him. Let them retire to the nearest bar, where the drinks will be on him.

I am an anti-Democrat. That said, fuck Boehner, and fuck the Republicans if they don't replace him. His leadership has been ineffective, he is part of the problem, and he needs to go. Ryan would be a better choice - his ideas tend in the right direction, though to my mind his plan that called for a balanced budget took an unacceptable amount of time to get there.

Just some virtual SWATTing by the Progressives that be.

Has anyone asked Paul Ryan if he wants to become speaker?

John Boehner has made a pretty good job of herding cats.
His situation is grounded in the U.S. Constitution when the Presidency and Senate are held by respectively Barack Obama and Harry Reid.
There is not much Boehner can do to get the country back on track until after the 2014 elections, and then only if we give him a better hand to play.

hmm, remember during the Rep primary when many Althouse con flock were just sayin' no to Willard ... to no avail.

Indeed, the 2008/2010 teabagger brigade would certainly fall in line behind loser Ryan, just like they have w/Boehner.

Supposedly boner feels safe 'cause no one else wants the job as it's a bridge to nowhere lol. Ryan has been layin' quite low lately, so certainly he doesn't want the job.

Oh what a tangled web the gang who can't shoot straight weave. I'm not a member of any organized political party, I'm a Republican.

bwahaha!

No, everybody rallied behind him once he became the nominee. It's one the reasons we know the election was stolen.

Did Ned Silver tell you that?

Because even a cursory reading of the news would tell someone how untrue that was. If you're going to spread FUD, it had to be credible, not risible.

Supposedly boner feels safe 'cause no one else wants the job as it's a bridge to nowhere lol. Ryan has been layin' quite low lately, so certainly he doesn't want the job.

No, it was a Bridge to Nowhere when Pelosi had it. All it's led to is a fiscal cliff and $16T in debt.

Oh what a tangled web the gang who can't shoot straight weave. I'm not a member of any organized political party, I'm a Republican

Considering they're the only party that can win their elections honestly, it speaks better of them than it does the Demos.

lol that.

By 2014 Boehner will be the greatest spender in Speaker history.

Does he want that?

shiloh said...

Apologies to doting, trained pet seals ...

Guildofcannonballs said...

"resistant-to-spending House" is not accurate.

These are the biggest spenders in history who blame resolutions that don't stop instead of their constituents, the press, and themselves.

edutcher said...

Never apologize, it's a sign of weakness.

Guildofcannonballs said...

The GOP should introduce a new bill every day, named after a dead civilian killed because of Fast and Furious or drone attacks.

Every day say how we had hoped BHO would inspire others around the world, not kill them. The cold, heartless predator.

Every accusation of "playing politics" should be shouted down with indignation so pure Joe Biden's meth-fueled debate persona would be in awe.

Old school, edutcher. When you're wrong you should say you're sorry. It has to do with character.

Bruce Hayden said...

Speaker Boehner has a couple of somewhat conflicting jobs, and he may not be the best at any of them, but maybe better than most at the combination. One is to be the face of the Republican Party in Congress and the other is to run the House.

The later, for a Republican speaker, is somewhat like herding cats. Pelosi didn't have that problem, because Dems tend to be top down, while Reps bottom up. She just penalized any Dems who crossed her, and that was that. Not that there isn't at least some of that, with senior senior members being denied leadership positions because they crossed senior leadership. Still, Pelosi wouldn't have had the problems Boehner did a day or two ago with Plan B. She didn't herd cats as much as crack the whip.

A lot of Republicans right now are looking for another Speaker Gingrich, who could go head-to-head with the Dem machine. Never mind that he never had the discipline to run the House that well, they see a need for a figurehead. And, Ryan would seemingly be good at that, with his seemingly inexhaustible supply of facts and figures that he can make understandable to average Americans.

I think Majority Leader Eric Cantor comes across as too much the inside player and too slimy to do a good job as Speaker. Too much worry that he would do under-the-table deals with the White House, etc. Appears vicious enough, just unlikely to get the confidence of the Republican caucus.

No, it has to do with humiliation.

Lefties love to run somebody who's been PI through the Full Court Alinsky, including the University Grovel, just to show they can do it and get away with it.

When they get caught, usually for truly doing something wrong, the Lefties apologize for getting caught, not what they did, mostly to shift the focus elsewhere, so it's a sign of no character.

Nothing wrong with saying you were wrong, but that's not apologizing.

Old school is still better than new school.

Baron Zemo said...

In the old school they didn't let losers walk into a school and blast little kids.

Maybe we should go back to the old fuckin' school.

Bender said...

Enough with the "herding cats" crap.

The House is NOT a one-man body. And Boehner is NOT a one-man party. It is not the job of the rest of the Republicans to "shut the hell up and do what they are told."

We had government-by-backroom-deals under Pelosi. That was supposed to change under Republican leadership. It didn't. Instead, we have one guy who thinks it is his job to dictate to everyone else what is going to be done -- no hearings, no debate, no questioning -- to hell with the constituents, to hell with the fact that voters elected 240 Republicans, not just one. If for no other reason, that is more than enough to say "hell no" to anything and everything that this putz puts forward, including Plan B (which is an abortion pill by the way).

Bender said...

Rather than worry about how this or that might effect their electoral chances in the future, why don't the Republicans do something revolutionary, something completely unheard of -- simply do the right thing. Do what needs to be done. No gimmick votes. No backroom deals and forced votes on things that no one has had time to read. No doing things half-assed (like the Ryan plan) because you are worried about bad publicity if you do it properly.

Just do the right thing. Period.

edutcher said...

Nicely put, milord.

Bender said...

Especially in the House --

Just worry about yourself -- pass your own legislation and don't worry about any "deals."

Just pass an appropriations bill -- limited to 2008 spending levels like you promised to do in getting elected in 2010 -- and leave it at that. Tell the Senate and Obama that that is all that is going to be spent.

Do your damn job of being a CHECK and a BALANCE to stop despots like Obama, rather than meeting with him, turning around, bending over, expecting the rest of us to take the pounding, and then coming out and whining about how unfair Obama is before emulating him by demanding that fellow Republicans eat the crap sandwich you have made yourself. It is awfully hard to legitimately criticize Obama for all this spending and increasing the debt when it is the Republican House that passed that spending and debt increases under the demands of Boehner, Cantor, and Ryan.

So, Althouse, does this mean that the observation the Boehner's speakership is in jeopardy wasn't a liberal / Ezra Klein meme, as you suggested yesterday? Just wondering.

shiloh said...

At this point in time, Boehner would easily give up his speakership for (40) pieces of silver ... or less lol.

Alex said...

I'm not sure Paul Ryan would want that dirty job.

Lydia said...

Aren't the most successful speakers of the House usually rough-and-tumble SOB types? Someone highly adept at arm twisting?

Doesn't sound like Paul Ryan's thing. Cantor, on the other hand, seems to have what it takes.

Re: Bruce Hayden:

Pelosi actually had some difficulty controlling her caucus at times. If anything, she was even worse than Boehner, who realised he didn't have the support before bringing it to a vote.
