December 30, 2012

On "Meet the Press" today, Obama mostly came across as the moderate, pragmatic politician I like.

Now, I'm not a sucker for mere posing, and in fact, I get suspicious when I hear what are simply assertions of pragmatism:
But generally if you look at how I've tried to govern over the last four years and how I'll continue to try to govern, I'm not driven by some ideological agenda. I am a pretty practical guy. And I just want to make sure that things work. And one of the nice things about never having another election again, I will never campaign again, is I think you can rest assured that all I care about is making sure that I leave behind an America that is stronger, more prosperous, more stable, more secure than it was when I came into office.
Well, no, I'm not going to rest assured. Much as I would love these statements to be true, they make me nervous. And that assurance came right after the most partisan thing he said in the whole interview. The moderator, David Gregory, had asked Obama how "frustrated" he was about the difficulty of getting things done with Congress. Gregory asserted that people were constantly coming up to him saying "Don't they realize, all of them, the president, Republicans and Democrats, how frustrated we all are?" And President Obama showed a little irritation:
Well, I think we're all frustrated. The only thing I would caution against, David, is I think this notion of, "Well, both sides are just kind of unwilling to cooperate." And that's just not true. I mean if you look at the facts, what you have is a situation here where the Democratic party, warts and all, and certainly me, warts and all, have consistently done our best to try to put country first.
Country first. Where'd he come up with that slogan?

Then Obama started inching away from this assertion that the Democrats are better. He shifts to more neutral boilerplate about trying "to work with everybody involved to make sure that we've got an economy grows" and "Make sure that it works for everybody. Make sure that we're keeping the country safe." Then he retreats again, making abstract concessions (in question form):
And does the Democratic party still have some knee jerk ideological positions and are there some folks in the Democratic party who sometimes aren't reasonable? Of course. That's true of every political party.
So are the Democrats better or not? He's melted into squishy blandness. And it's exactly here that he does the not-an-ideologue/practical-guy riff that appears at the beginning of this post.

A practical guy would acknowledge and make major changes to the looming entitlement problems. Raising tax rates on those making $250,000 and up will not only do very little to close the current deficits it will do nothing for the looming entitlement-led fiscal crisis. The only ones proposing major changes to entitlements are the Republicans. Not the Democrats and certainly not Obama. Gregory is a high capacity sycophant.

He simply does not know, or believe in what needs done. This is why he never should have been voted for the first time or the second. He's a sugar addict, and you put him in charge of the menu. It is not possible for him to fix what's broken.

If this country somehow survives this, and manages to turn itself around, it will be a testament to the power, energy and determination of her entrepreneurs, in spite of Obama, not because of him. He is a drain on our energy and motivation, and has been ideologically in that failed school his entire life.

You need to snap out of this denial of fact just because you wish it true for some reason. He will not help - he was a mistake.

Obama's appearance on "Meet The Press" is specifically targeted to the low information voter.
Case in point: The show plays on the TV at the laudromat that I occasionally visit. Not concerned or maybe slightly concerned will be doing their business and THIS will be time they pay attention. I can see them looking up from what they're doing and thinking "hey this guy sounds reasonable" then back to whatever they were doing. Then lo and behoold Republicans get blamed for this mess.
That's why Obama likes to go on these shows. He's not stupid, he know the audience.

It's disappointment. Many of the people here favored a different candidate and a different outcome. They will continue to oppose Obama because they don't agree with his politices. This seems a little difficult for you to understand. Seems pretty simple to me.

Obama is all about winning and tactics. He just doesn't care what happens to the country after he leaves office. It's possible that he is as much in thrall to economic delusions as shiloh but that's just so hard to believe. Maybe he's just that ignorant. Even Clinton took advice.

As pointed out on Powerline, it's Boehner's own fault for playing the "smoke-filled room" secret negotiations game in the first place. The Dems will always be cast as the "reasonable ones" when the story is told by the media, so the Republicans should propose their solution to the fiscal crisis in the form of legislation that's publicly debated in the House. Do everything on the record and let the chips fall where they may.

Joe Biden, America's Putin said...

The press will not ask Obama anything about the last 4 years. What about all that failure? Solyndra? Abound Solar? The shovel ready jobs that Obama laughed at? The bad economy? Rising poverty? Food stamp usage at record highs? The total lack of transparency in government? The huge sums of money handed out to cronies and donors? You would think someone in the media would ask him a question about the last 4 years. Nothing.
Boop - never happened.

Now Obama needs to hike tax rates in order to pay for his mess and somehow balance that with the economic devastation it will cause. Bring on the blame game. Oh if only Obama could actually care about the economy. If only he understood it. He could be a great moderate.

They do care about advancing their political, economic, and social standing through manipulation of perception and democratic leverage.

We know it's gratuitous because they do not protect the Constitutional rights (e.g. due process, right to life) of all citizens, from "creation" (per our national charter) to grave; they do not prevent the illegal entry of around one million aliens annually; they reject responsibility for illegally arming cartels and terrorists. They have no moral standing, but they do have a pliant and compliant press to manipulate perception, and trillions of dollars in debt to exploit needs and desires of opportunistic individuals.

A weakened foreign policy which has long been a dream of the liberals. Well, we've got four years of history to look at right now, and Althouse hasn't got a clue. You know she teaches for a living, don't you?

I think you're being too tough on Althouse.

Yeah, she made a mistake when she voted for Obama in 2008, but I'm not sure it was all that stupid for a person with liberal inclinations to do so then. He did present himself as a moderate after all. And even though his history was less than clear and less than stellar, there was still the possibility that he would grow as president.

But I don't think she's falling for it again, although she's sorely tempted: Much as I would love [Obama's "assertions of pragmatism"] to be true, they make me nervous.

Just hope she's not going to prove me an idiot.

Isn't the President from the camp which asserts that there is no truth (call it "absolute truth," if you prefer), and instead holds that political positions are ideological.

From that perspective, the only distinction is how firmly people adhere to their beliefs--if they regard them as principles and refuse to compromise when Obama wants them to, they are ideologues. If they compromise when Obama wants them to, they are practical. But, by definition, they are being practical in the service of the President's ideological goals--for from his perspective (if I understand his philosohy correctly), all our beliefs are ideological.

The idea of ideology, after all, was invented in France in the 1790s. It was what replaced the classic idea of nature, and, hence, it rejected the classic distinctions between nature and convention, and between truth and opinion
