It's a heartrending image from the nightmare before Christmas, alright. The United States leads the world in school shootings. We could reduce the chances of incidents like this happening in the future by arming teachers and reinstitutionalizing the mentally ill.
Yeah, it *is* 'mourn porn' but I also think it offers the rest of us the chance to say 'There but for the Grace of God go I' and realize yet again that while our lives may suck in certain areas - mine does and I'm sure that almost everyone here could say the same thing - that we don't have the grief being experienced by this woman or the families of the victims.
Huh? The caption of the photo in the original link, at least by the time I saw it:
Jillian Soto, identified by USA Today, brakes down as she learns the news about her sister, Victoria Soto, who was killed at the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting.
I remember because yesterday I was trying to see how much they look alike, and thinking about how close they must have been.
Soto lived with her parents, her sisters and a brother in Stratford, Conn. Home was a modest Cape Cod-style house in a blue-collar neighborhood. She was single, doted on her black Labrador, Roxy, and was a regular worshiper at the Lordship Community Church in Stratford.
I've insulated myself quite well from the media hype of this incident. Haven't watched a lick of news, nor visited any online news sources. In fact, that's the first photo I've seen related to the massacre.
My 2 kids have no clue what happened either, thankfully.
Yeah, I understand the "mourn porn" critique, but I think a lot of it is authentic too. A lot of us are really stunned by this. Though it seems we're obsessing over it, I have also noticed at least in myself, always an effort to not completely face or picture what has happened.
It's a collective, freaked-out, poignant WTF, as much as it is "mourn porn."

Yes! Lock up anyone deemed "mentally ill"! Better yet, lock up anyone that acts weird or has "funny" beliefs! It's the "conservative" approach, the Government will pay for it!
In fact, maybe we should consider exterminating all strange people before the cause any trouble!

That's a stupid strawman argument. No one is demanding all mentally ill people get locked up. You exemplify why libertarians will never win major elections.

Very well. Hysterical outburst notwithstanding, do you recognize the existence of the mentally ill, and if so, what do you propose we ought do about them if they demonstrate a propensity to violence?

Minor quibble: Lordship is definitely not what I would call a "blue collar" neighborhood (my grandparents lived there for years, so I know it well). While the houses are not large, the neighborhood is in a very desirable location on Long Island Sound.

"Heartbreaking anguish" is the new "blazing inferno."

Mourn porn.
Kind of like Internet comment-trolling — everybody* denounces it, then goes right on enabling it.

*"Everybody" meant in an editorial sense; not literally 'everybody on the planet' or 'everybody in the country'.

WHAT I HAVE NOTICED FROM SOME OF THE TELE I HAVE WATCHED IS HOW FAB AND PRETTY THE EAST COAST PEEPS ARE.
SO STOIC AND ATTRACTIVE DURING EVIL TIMES.
WE REALLY ARE BETTER THAN THE REST OF THE COUNTRY.
Something we really didn't need to know.

You exemplify why libertarians will never win major elections.
And you exemplify why Statist mediocrities always do.
Much like when Ohio national guardsmen massacred Kent State students!
and so it goes ...

Isn't it a little early to call that photo iconic?

It's mourn porn, no 2 ways about it. Shame on the press that ran the photo.
