ADDED: The man, Pedro Hernandez, has been a suspect in the past, but "it was not immediately clear when he became the object of their interest nor what prompted his arrest."
The development came weeks after what had appeared to be a break in the decades-old death when detectives honed in on a Soho basement in search of human remains...
At the time the boy vanished, the basement housed the workshop of Othniel Miller, who has recently come under scrutiny in the case....
The police have long had a prime suspect in the case, Jose A. Ramos, a convicted child molester who lived on the Lower East Side and was an acquaintance of a woman who worked for the Patzes as a baby sitter. Mr. Ramos remains imprisoned for molesting a boy in Pennsylvania, but has denied kidnapping or killing Etan.

"One law enforcement official said detectives and F.B.I. agents were proceeding cautiously, noting that the man had provided no information to investigators that was not already in the public record."
I hope the terrible heartache of Etan's parents is assuaged soon.
There are sociopaths among us, right next door, in public office, or married to family. No conscience, no soul. Evil, destructive.
It's good to learn their ways and be ready.
I've met a few of them. They look at you like you're a fly to be swatted, or a block of wood to be moved around at will.
Or like a meal.
Etan Patz may have been the first child to appear on a milk carton but the Lindbergh baby was the first to appear on a milk bottle.
How can the NYPost article not include the boys' age at disappearance? Or did I miss it?
No, phx, you didn't miss it - the article doesn't mention Etan's age, which was six.
What absolute, decades-long hell for his family.
