Nature is well designed when it can reproduce, find a food supply, and defend itself from attacks. The squirrels must also reproduce abundantly enough to feed red tailed hawks. Ergo: the squirrels are not gay.

Saw that this morning, though I think it's chalk, not paint. Still, like protesters disrupting the bonhomie a Packer game, some things just should not be politicized.
So, another fun view right now is the Peregrine Falcon Cam in downtown Salt Lake City.
(The gray building you see on the left of camera 1 is the Mormon church HQ.)
Camera 2 is at mms://stream.lds.org/nestcam
[Sorry, can't link to an mms:]
It requires a media player to load, and that takes about 20 seconds sometimes, but you get sound too, and the Mom (or Dad?) is presently sitting on 4 or 5 eggs.
Here is the full web page with the all camera links.
You probably already know about the bald eagle cam located in Blair, Wisconsin. The nest has two adults and two eaglets. But if you don't know about it, here's the link:
The bald eagle cam in Decorah, Iowa is a bit more interesting because it has sound and the cam owner has the ability to "pan" the camera around and zoom in. But the owner of the cam doesn't do tat very often. So most of the time the camera is just fixed on the enormous nest which contains the three eaglets. These birds are older than the Wisconsin eaglets. The Iowa ones will be ready to see what flying is all about in 4-6 weeks or so.
Mom or Dad had wings spread covering the babies. Saw the shadow on the ground of a hawk flying overhead. Suspect a predator in the area with one of the parents providing guard watch.
The eagle cams are nice but the first one wouldn't run until an advertisement ran first so I pissed right off to the second eagle cam which ran and I thought, "ah, how nice, an eagle cam without advertisements glommed all over it, just as videos should be." And then an advertisement popped up and I pissed right off.
Site designers, the birds are not that interesting.
Oh man, I missed the squirrel! Can't believe it. They're making quite a dent in the mouse/chipmunk population there. I notice that every small critter that comes back is missing the head - is that the portion that Mom/Dad gets to eat, or do they just open up the food so that it's easier for the chicks to dig in?
I was thinking about these RT hawks while I was doing field work today. I was wishing a hawk would fly overhead when the fricking pocket gophers got flushed and were running on the ground.
Sans a hawk, I tried to run them down with the tractor and digger. Damn things are so numerous and problematic the township has a bounty on them ($3/tail.)
I'm thinking of putting up a hawk perch pole between two fields since there are few trees they can utilize. But for now, I'll settle for watching hawk cam.
The first time I watched the chicks were quite small and two of them were sitting on the third while they scarfed up all the goodies. I'm glad to see the third one seems to be growing well. I keep worrying they will fall off over the ledge. When one of the parents is in the nest cleaning up they seem so casual about how they bump the chicks around. My children would laugh if they could see this. They say I'm a born worrier, and I guess it's true.
That is totally sick. I'll wager Jamie Lynne Grumet sez she loves her son. Bullshit. She loves to be seen as the loving mother. She love herself, and loves whatever makes her more lovable in her own estimation.
Liberals think of children as adornments to the lives, desirable in the ideal. But when it comes down to whose life is more valuable, then the kid gets the dirty end of the stick. In the worst circumstances the kid gets legally murdered, in less extreme case they get warped for life like this unweaned 4yo. Sick. Depraved. Venial.

Did anyone take a bucket of water to the "Recall Walker" chalk in the parking lot?

The chick in the center looks a lot smaller than its siblings.
I had not seen both parents together. They are very close in size. Usually the male is noticeably smaller. Everybody looks good!
Hawkcam can piss right off with its advertisements. I'm going elsewhere for my hawkporn.
...except the squirrel- bad day for him.
"Lunch is squirrel!"
And then Moose, after which Fearless Leader's plan will become manifest. ;)
Do these hawks have local groupies? 'Round the clock vigil of lounge chairs, tripods of binoculars and cameras, old men in shorts?

Babies growing fast. Pin feathers emerging.
Watching the littlest for development of pin feathers.

Wow, this has a much better view of the nest than NYC NYU hawknest/cam

She is really struggling to get the 4 eggs fully covered.
Oh nuts, I missed lunch.

After all the fund raising generated by marriage hawks, one would think lunch would be something better than squirrel.
I mean, can you see Elisabeth Warren checking the Native American box for the smoked squirrel?

The new Time cover seems appropriate.
They have a squirrel now, or still, or something. The parent seems to be letting the chicks attempt to tear it and they aren't getting anywhere.
Hah! It's a chipmunk. They've just been sitting on it instead of eating it.

Aha! Now we see Althouse's true interest in the matter (any enemy of the squirrels is a friend of hers?)
Nature, red in tooth and tail.
Nest seems narrow and as chicks grow and begin wing stretching and flapping, someone can easily take a tumble over the side.
Any chance SSEC can install a safety net? or is it a 'let nature take its course' position.....
