A Meadhouse conversation about blogging/broadcasting and marriage.

I read that last post out loud and said "I sent that to Glenn."

Meade: "Oh, you emailed it to him." I see the concerned look on his face.

Me: "I wrote it as a post, and then I emailed the link to Glenn. What?! That look! What if Rush Limbaugh ran everything past his wife before he said it on the air? 'I'm thinking of saying this... what do you think?' His show would be horrible!"

Meade:
"You should post that. This conversation. Exactly that."

Me: "Shhh!"

Meade: "You..."

Me: "Shhhhhh! Don't say anything. I won't remember the quotes."

ADDED: Actually, I can imagine that Rush's Fluke floundering did involve some consultation with his wife. I can imagine a woman egging him on, making him feel licensed to attack a woman in a truly bitchy way. My other theory about Rush — which Meade doesn't want me to publish — is that he just had to seize the spotlight back from Andrew Breibart, who'd gotten so much attention by dropping dead at the age of 43. Everyone was talking about Breitbart, as if Breitbart had been the biggest thing in right-wing media. We'll never see his like again... and Rush felt compelled to say something truly outrageous. He's always saying he knows how to play the media, to do his "media tweak of the day":
This was our Media Tweak of the Day yesterday, April. You know, what we do here on this program is, purposely, play the media like violin, like a Stradivarius. And I love tweaking them. I love irritating them, and I love upsetting them and all you do is take words uttered by liberals and apply them to current events.
And he tweaked his damnedest.

IN THE COMMENTS: James correctly points out that Rush started talking about Fluke on his February 29th show, and we did not hear of Breitbart's death until the morning of March 1st. So the basic "prostitute" idea was out there already, but Rush, having heard criticism, pushed back hard on the March 1st show, and then again on March 2nd.

Cool. It's almost like we are right there with you. I can almost see Meade in his boxers and Hello Kitty slippers, spatula in hand, pancake on floor.

Here, bags, I brushed it off for you. It's still warm.

A post in which Ann compares herself to Rush.

And compares Mead to some really hot babe (I can't keep track of them.)

Ann Althouse said...

Meade is a really hot babe!

The chickification of Meade.

Damn feminazis!

Ann Althouse said...

So when Cher sang to Sonny, in words written by Sonny, "I got you babe," she was feminizing him?

Ann Althouse said...

I wanted to be Cher back then!

Meade said...

Cher wishes she could be you now, babe.

Well, The Blonde and I bounce ideas off each other.

I do try to duck when the occasional idea is answered by the nearest lamp.

Are we talking spanking here?

Wouldn't have worked.

Don't know how you sing, but, from what I can see, you're built lots better.

(Any more of this and the dishes will be left on the table, the coffee to get cold, and the last pancake to harden on the hot griddle.)

(Uhm......don't mind us.......we're just slipping out to walk down to the corner to get a newspaper, and maybe over to the Greek coffee shop to see who's there.)

Did someone spill the syrup or what? I'm getting cavities just being here.

Rush is hemorraging sponsors. Because? People are purposely tuning in to see who is advertising. And, then they go to their phones and call companies to complain.

Surprisingly, in very bad taste. And, it went viral. Just in case there are candidates out there, who have a team of experts always looking to see their client "up above the fold."

Inadvertently, this helps Obama.

What do you think Michelle said to her husband when she first heard the "slut" crack?

edutcher said...

How many stations carry him?

The replacements will be lined up hip deep.

In any case, I only heard of three.

bagoh20 said...

I would bet that Rush ends up with more support and demand for advertising. His faithful will out perform the haters on the phone calls. Boycotts backfire with some people. Rush is one.

Althouse is infamous for her lack of singing on this blog....

it's a little late for that now,...

Now we introduce the word 'bitch'.

Didn't you just do exactly what you said Rush did wrong?

And you don't even know her.

You should have listened to Meade on this one because your "theory" is not supported by the facts. I listen to Rush's Show daily and heard live when he addressed Fluke's testimony during the third hour on Wednesday, February 29. I immediately knew it would cause controversy...

"RUSH: What does it say about the college co-ed Sandra Fluke, who goes before a congressional committee and essentially says that she must be paid to have sex, what does that make her? It makes her a slut, right? It makes her a prostitute. She wants to be paid to have sex. She's having so much sex she can't afford the contraception. She wants you and me and the taxpayers to pay her to have sex. What does that make us? We're the pimps. (interruption) The johns? We would be the johns? No! We're not the johns. (interruption) Yeah, that's right. Pimp's not the right word. Okay, so she's not a slut. She's "round heeled." I take it back."

Andrew Breitbart died several hours after Rush's comments; most news reports say he died early in the morning of Thursday, March 1. So Rush's comments preceded Breitbart's death by at least 10 hours.

Crack, you will do time in Purgatory for that People Of Walmart shot.

hmm, a circle jerk Althouse/Meade thread as "we" knew it would eventually come to this. :-P

And yes, Althouse is still infatuated w/Limbaugh, so not to worry!

Ann Althouse said...

@James I agree that he started on Wednesday, but he doubled down on Thursday, and he doubled down a second time on Friday.

James said...

Maybe he doubled down on Thursday and Friday but the reaction started as soon as the initial comments were made on Wednesday. Rush even acknowledged as much when he kicked off the show Thursday saying that the reaction was larger than the "phony soldier" controversy.

But since we're offering theories, mine is that Rush called the bomb squad to his home Thursday night to divert attention from his earlier comments and to regain attention that was focused on Breitbart's death.

rhhardin said...

The advertisers started to leave for the same reason that Imus's did - a social media campaign.

So that's three: Imus, John and Ken, Limbaugh, all silenced by lefty trivialities spun as crimes against women.

All called whores.

As Althouse conservative lemmings continue to childishly double down here.

What a miserable life Limbaugh must lead ie all that $$$ and fame er infamy and he spews hatred 24/7. Very sad!

I love, sometimes, how you can't say when you're wrong:

1) if Rush's wife was consulting him, then you're admitting there's nothing inherently sexist or overly rude about what he said - a woman could reach the same conclusion - meaning it's a marker of American culture.

2) Even after discovering the riff had nothing to do with Breitbart, you still push this idea that Rush had to one-up him. Hilarious.

You're an idea machine, I'll give you that. How much thought goes into them, I don't know, but you do do get them, that's for sure,...

"A girl can't make a living anymore."

Did you say "girl"?

That's demeaning. You should say "lady".

As in, "I did not have sex with that lady."

Meade said...

Or, "I did not have sex with and make a sex tape with that lady, impregnate her, pay her off from campaign funds given to me by Bunny Mellon, deny that I'm the child's father, but, wait, oh, Judge, could I have that sex tape back please?"

traditionalguy said...

Limbaugh needs to spend more of his time thinking about his verbal weapons and less of his time boasting how smart he is.

This whole kerfuffle reminds me of the early WWII US submarines going out against the Japs with untested and cheap torpedoes.

Most of them would not explode except for a few that made a circular run out and back and sank the submarine that fired them.

The Crack Emcee said...

Here's a(nother) problem with Romney, and a clear example of how badly Rush screwed up - from Hot Air:

Debbie Wasserman-Schultz: When will Mitt Romney repudiate Rush Limbaugh?

Axelrod on Limbaugh: That wasn’t an apology, it was a “quasi-apology”

Romney's malleable, and Rush being bent over.

Hide the eyes of the children, people:

It can only get uglier from here,...

Boring is obviously not an acceptable option inside Meadehouse.

Considering it was ordered to be destroyed, what do you make of that? I'm still scratching my head on that one. What is he thinking? Any ideas, from you or the machine?

The Crack Emcee said...

I have always said Ann is the bravest of the big-time bloggers and Professor Jacobson is the classiest - and he nails one aspect of this Liefest - pointing a clear direction for getting out of it, a bit, and bringing us back closer to reality. From Insty;

PROF. JACOBSON: Make An Example of Carbonite. “Indeed, Carbonite still advertises on the show of Ed Schultz, who makes unhinged attacks on the Tea Party and conservatives daily, and called conservative talk show host Laura Ingraham a slut.”

Since they dropped Rush, he could go after them, too - AFTER he admits he fucked up with his "apology."

Come on, Rush, untangle yourself,....

shiloh said...

"Make An Example of Carbonite."

hmm, Sonny died (14) years ago.

And while Althouse is in no way like Cher, Cher does sing her fav song.

The term "personal attack" is a term of art in communications law. Until 10 or 12 years ago when it was repealed, a personal attack triggered a requirement to offer a chance for the person attacked to respond over the air.

In Rush's case, with 600 stations that would have been a huge problem. But, that rule is no longer in effect, along with the fairness doctrine.

Skippy said...

Althouse says: "Actually, I can imagine that Rush's Fluke floundering did involve some consultation with his wife. I can imagine a woman egging him on, making him feel licensed to attack a woman in a truly bitchy way."

Exactly how many women have consults with their husbands about how they should perform their jobs? What information do you have that would prove that Limbaugh's wife would do this? All I can assume is that this is projection -- it's what Althouse does and somehow thinks other women do...interfering with a husband's professional conduct. It's just absurd.

shiloh said...

Pretty sure Althouse ain't coming back to this thread ie diminishing returns! :-P
