A year ago today here in Wisconsin...

... the Joint Finance Committee had just passed Gov. Walker's budget repair bill, and Meade and I were talking about the previous days protests...
He laughed... did the exaggerated flailing arms and stomping legs of drumbeat dancing, accompanied by the chant "THIS is WHAT deMOCracy LOOKS like." Putting the mock in democracy....

The fact is that the Republicans decisively won the governorship and both houses of the state legislature — probably with next to no votes from the people who came to the demonstration. If you're asking — like Shilling — for the Republican legislators to listen to democracy, they should look at the last election, the people all over the state who voted for them and, presumably, for fiscal responsibility and shared sacrifice.
I posted a bunch of photos Meade had taken the previous day, showing the big mess of signs and sticks that were thrown around outside the entrance to the Capitol.
"Educators... care..." enough to leave signs to be trampled into the texture of the wet concrete....
"Proud" pile of dirty snow promises to "fight."
I contrast this to the tea party rallies where people famously leave the place clean. I think this post of mine had an effect. It got picked up by various pro-Walker sites and shows, and thereafter the protesters were fairly scrupulous about litter — of the horizontal, outdoor type. Taped-up signs, signs stuck in snow piles, and horizontal indoor arrays of signs would proliferate like mad.

Meade interviewed a woman who had a sign portraying Scott Walker as Hitler. At 0:46 she does a take that we've never forgotten.

I took a photo of a woman holding a Walker-as-Hitler sign in front of her face.
I asked the woman if she thought Scott Walker was like Hitler, and she said "Yes." So I said, "Are you saying that you think fascism could come to America," and she said, "It's what's happening."
I video'd a guy with a "Sic Semper Tyrannis" sign, which is an allusion to assassination.

A collection of photos I took of signs at the day's protests — including "Trap the Rat."

More signs, by Meade and me, including a misspelling of the sort lefties had been mocking as "Teabonics" when made by tea partiers.

Protest dogs.

One of my favorite videos
from last year's protests, showing very enthusiastic teenagers marching from West High School toward the Capitol. Lots of screaming and jumping. Meade quips: "They're so happy to be out of school."

Late that evening, we got the word that the 14 Senate Democrats had fled the state. And I saw a news story that said "It appears that tomorrow may well be the biggest day yet at the Capitol in the current wave of activity...." I asked — it's funny in retrospect — "Could things get any bigger?"

A photograph of protesters in the Capitol around a big American flag hung upside down, and I sympathetically opined: "I don't think most of those people posing around it realized they were part of a tableau of disrespect." Some commenters informed me that the flag hung upside down is a signal of distress and snarked "google and basic deduction can be your friend." I Googled and came back:
This isn't a ship in distress. It's an appropriation of our national symbol to make a political statement. I'm very familiar with this from the 1960s.
Debate ensues.

We get the news that the Madison schools would close for a second day it becomes known that teachers will do another sick-out to protest.

2011 Protest nostalgia already? Come on, it's too damn soon.

You should submit your photos to the Smithsonian; they were collecting signs at one point of protests for historical preservation. But I forget if those were Wisc. protests or Occupy protests.

By their profoundly intense coupling with the Marxists, public school teachers have no idea the damage they did to themselves. They allowed a fire-brand wielding harlot destroy their public persona. The majority of the public will forever look upon them with a far more critical eye.

China is more serious then America

Basically what we need is more authoritarianism. But I find it funny to see a hard left winger like Eugene Robinson pining for a government that is the #1 environmental bandit of the world and oppressor of Tibet.

The most damning comparison of the Tea Partiers and the Lefties, as Ann noted, is the fact that the Lefties always leave the place a mess.

Very Freudian.

Ees no' my job, man.

Somebody'll clean it up.

I got mine, you get yours.

That was a transient phenomenon. Pretty weak evidence.

We'll have to get you to a rally, chickenlittle, when you hit Madison this summer.

@garage: Have you got a Union membership that lets you buy beer at the Terrace?

The OWS Play did its try out in Madison before moving to Broadway with a few re-writes.

But if Romney is not the GOP's final candidate, then all of that creative effort will be for nought.

Then the war on conservatives financiers from Wall Street will have to morph into a war on Catholic doctrines. The Wall Street guys are mostly into Obama's crony system of capitalism anyway. That would be like fake wrestling.

But with Santorum it will be one fierce war because Catholic Doctrines are the deadly enemy of the doctrines of The Worldwide Church of Secular Humanism.

I went to a rally Garage, and your team screamed f**k you and blew horns for two or three hours so I could barely hear a word. You know the same thing won't happen when you kids get together this summer.

One side is noisy, enraged, entitled ill mannered children, and one side is not. Grow up, assholes.

I've never needed one.

I think the renovation starts this summer, I haven't been down there in a while. The theater might not even be open?

Reading all that nostalgia makes me miss the commenter madawaskan.

I have a 24' pontoon on Lake Waubesa we can take cruising though. What date are you looking at?

chickelit said...

End of June. No dates yet.

Party boat?

garage mahal said...

Taking the boat up to Warner is fun to see the fireworks. Makes for a late night though, by the time you get back through the locks, and back through Monona to Waubesa.

Petunia said...

Are they cutting back the fireworks themselves this year, or just the ancillary stuff?

garage mahal said...

I think the carnival part at Warner is getting axed.

If you want to see additional photos of the Anti-
Walker protest, Tamarack Studio and Gallery on E.Wash has an exhibit entitled Inside, At Night, Origins of An Uprising-- check it out when visiting Madison.

"'sic semper tyrannis' which is an allusion to assassination."

I have no sympathy for the anti-Walkerites, but I hate to see this noble motto so maligned. Yes, the phrase is attributed to Marcus Junius Brutus, the most famous figure in the assassination of Julius Caesar. Yes, John Wilkes Booth famously uttered the dread latin phrase upon shooting Lincoln. But no, it is not an allusion to assassination any more than "allahu akbar" is an allusion to suicide bombing. The phrase was recommended by the great patriot George Mason, whose efforts led to the adoption of the Bill of Rights, to be part of the Virginia state seal, which it is, as well as the Virginia state motto. The State Flag of Virginia bears the Great Seal of the Commonwealth on a field of blue. The seal includes the phrase which is also the State Motto. The Seal was planned by Mason and designed by George Wythe, who signed the United States Declaration of Independence and taught law to Thomas Jefferson.

The phrase is also the motto of the United States Navy attack submarine USS Virginia. It is also the motto of Allentown, the third largest city in Pennsylvania, and is referenced in the official state song of Maryland.

"Thus Always to Tyrants" has a impressive pedigree and wonderfully encapsulates love of liberty, defiance, and scorn. It would be wrong to let a few dirt bags wrongfully appropriate it by desecration.

Judge to Walker: No extra time to review recall petitions"

Shocking considering this statement from the "judge":

"There is little likelihood . . . there is going to be any legitimate challenge to the sufficiency of the petitions," Niess said. "We are going to have a boatload of extra signatures we don't need."

Well, at least in some things he is honest.

Edutcher, the comparison you and Ann make of the messes leaves out an important reality. The Tea Party was funded by billionaires and orchestrated by influential right wing extremist. The attendees were far more likely to return to their motel rooms or to the buses that brought them there. The Wisconsin protesters, much like the Occupiers, didn't have these luxuries. Obviously, the intense passion and determination of the Union workers to what they viewed as an assault required more than a few hours on a sunny afternoon (contingent on how certain media outlets desire to alter the scenery) by Tea Partiers to say, uh, to say, whatever it was that they were trying to say.

The wisconsin brownshirts have a better quality of life than the taxpayers they are ripping off.

Cherry picked? Cheap shot?

You're claiming the Wisconsin Union Thugs didn't have the "luxury" of returning to their buses or hotel rooms...

Again, I ask if you are smoking crap. Thats the only explanation for shamelessly floating such a bs statement.

And this right here is why you will lose and keep on losing.

That statement is a reflection of what you want the Teaparty to be.

It is so far from the truth it is ridiculous.

We are beginning our long march through your institutions. Time to grow up.

R.J. said...

Fen, perhaps you dismiss prominent think tanks such as Americans For Prosperity, Freedom Works, or Citizens for a Sound Economy as a "luxury". Perhaps you assume that FOX News constant 24/7 promotions to someone's agenda as irrelevant. Hell, you don't see Walker protesters or Occupiers on the verge of a multimillion sponsored NASCAR promotion. Catch my drift? I suspect not. I'd say the scope of your ability to argue on a rational level has been established.

Rusty,
"The Tea Party was funded by billionaires and orchestrated by influential right wing extremist.

And this right here is why you will lose and keep on losing."

Unfortunately, you're very much correct.
