"This holiday has felt a bit like one last long, deep breath before we plunge into 2012."

"This time next year, I don't want us to have any regrets."

Another example of email from the Obama campaign that has a creepy, too-personal tone. That's supposedly from Michelle Obama.

Deep breaths... plunging... no regrets...

Back off!

I can't understand what the point of these emails is. (I receive them too).

All they do is beg for more money, more campaign contributions. He's amassed a billion, with a b, dollars.

What the hell are they going to do with that much money, that they still need more?

They could make a blockbuster movie, with the biggest stars in Hollywood, scheduled for release in October 2012, and burn through only 1/4 of it.

And hell, if there is such a movie in the works, with Denzel Washington as Barack Obama, making the tough call to go in and get Osama (complete with Denzel/Obama leading the strike team himself, repelling down a rope from the chopper and crashing through Osama's bedroom window), the Democrats wouldn't have to pay for it -- any major movie studio will do it pro bono.

I don't understand these continuous pleas for contributions.

Barack's three strategic PR campaigns have been run since last summer.

First, Barack is a sensitive and lonely man commanding bravely through bad times who needs sympathy.

Second, Barack fights to save us from the Rich People lurking.

And Third, Barack saves Hispanics from the GOP's Final Solution.

Only P. T. Barnum could really appreciate the Three Ring Show Ring Master Barack runs for the new born suckers.

But looking at the growth of Ron Paul's paranoid suckers makes Obama seem mainstream.

I, too, am on the emailing list. I used to open them for curiosity's sake but now I regard them as almost harassment. I wonder if anyone opens them with enthusiasm. It's all the same stuff like Pastafarian says...begging for those small $3 to $5 donations so they can falsely brag they are a campaign funded by the little people. Bleh!

I'm guessing to be able to send money to democrat congressmen and senators to buy their votes if helped get re-elected.

Get someone like Garage to send money to Obama, as its unlikely he will send it to some obscure lawmaker somewhere other than WI.

Lyssa said...

Did prior first ladies send out emails like this, or is this a new thing? One thing that I hate about politics/politicians (and this is completely bi-partisan) is the way that we somehow have to involve their entire family. I would never get an email from the spouse of a CEO, or something, about company business.

garage: "Unsubscribe?"

Not me. It's good to know what these people are up to. I remember receiving this one too:

"This holiday season, we're giving you a chance to have a little fun at the expense of a Republican in your life by letting them know they inspired you to make a donation to the Obama campaign.

Simply enter their name and email address below. Then, we'll send them a message letting them know they inspired you to donate.

Thank you for supporting this campaign, and happy holidays."

Think about that. They're asking their supporters to give them the contact information to their political opponents, so that they can compile it into an enemies list.

But it's just for a little fun, is all. They won't use that information to track down your name and address, and give that to the IRS. Heavens to Betsy no.

I mean, sure, they'll give firearms to Mexican drug lords, who will use those guns to kill hundreds, just to advance their anti-gun agenda; but they'll draw a line in the sand at our right to privacy. You can trust them.

I don't think Pastaman is complaining about being stalked.

I'd say that althouse doesn't unsubscribe because even stalkerish emails are bloggable.

DCCC Chairman Rep. Steve Israel: Give Us $3 So I Can “Tell Leader Pelosi Americans Are Fed Up With These Tea Party Extremists”…

2nd email today

Drew –

After all the media hype about the Tea Party, I’d love to say that 500,000 grassroots Democrats stepped up in 2011 to kick Republicans out of Congress in 2012.

But I can’t say that — yet.

I had my team run the numbers, and if we can get 3 more contributions from your local area, I’ll be able to tell Leader Pelosi, the Republicans, the media, and anyone else who’ll listen that half-a-million Americans are fed up with these Tea Party extremists and have joined our campaign to defeat them.

Will you chip in whatever you can — even just $3 — to help us reach an incredible 500,000 contributors before midnight tomorrow’s year-end FEC deadline?

-ZIP

Please, won't you give the man $3, so he can tell Pelosi how horrible we are, and make the world a better place?

Are these emails sent to women only expecting them to be all like Judith Warner (you know that woman who wrote about dreaming of having sex with Barack(sic)?)

Is that MO's intention here to seduce other women? Is she pimping her husband?

{I wonder if this keeps up, will Ann stop writing those posts where she sides with Obama referring to him as 'our president' ever so endearingly? )

Sprezzatura said...

"Back off!"

What's the point of this comment, since un-unsubscribing-Althouse has zero intention of actually asking for these emails to back off?

Really she should have written:

"MORE!"

So that her actions and her blather better lined up.

P.S.
I received a real x-mas card from the Obama family. And, there was no unsubscribe option w/ real mail. Too bad Althouse didn't get one of those, her silliness would be less obvious if she wasn't asking her readers to pretend that she doesn't have 100% power over her, inbox re the Obama family.

The question is not so much about 'unsubscribe' as the irritating contents of the email. By saying 'backoff' Althouse is indicating how those emails make the voters feel. What focus group is telling Obama campaign to send these emails out?

Sprezzatura said...

"Althouse is indicating how those emails make the voters feel."

No.

What Althouse is really doing is spewing BS thick enough to fertilize Meade's vegetable garden. Recall her protesting the so-called civility BS? How about her repeated theme where she expresses support for strong political language?

But, now she takes these two harmless sentences and expects us to interpret them as some sort of creepy, deep breathing, plunging, no regretting, personal affront.

Whine box is as whine box does.

That "long deep breath before the plunge," is from Tolkein's Return of the King. It is Gandlf's characterization of the quiet time before the great final battle between Gondor and he forces of Mordor.

I receive these emails. I don't unsubscribe for a variety of reasons: They're reminders of why these idiot people don't deserve to occupy the White House; they are a source of painful amusement; they provide insight into what we're dealing with. It's a shame it's not possible to respond because the snide, satirical replies practically write themselves.

I don't know if the email is creepy; it's certainly pathetic, and the post is perfectly in line with the theme of the day--whores--real ones, unions, the White House.

Chip Ahoy said...

Unsubscribe.

Is that all you've got? Really? You choose not to address the issue raised in the post that your first lady is making desperate pleas for cash directed to an already plump fund and striking both eliminationist and personal tones and, well, what would you call it in the historical sense, unseemly.

See how deftly you change things and still sound reasonable. Althouse describes The FLOTUS' activity unflatteringly. You respond by pointing out she doesn't have to accept the emails and therefore is ridiculous in complaining about being stalked. True, but you avoid addressing the First Lady's activity. Is that alright with you? Really? It will be fine with you then, and you'll sit there and be quiet when you see a Republican doing the same thing and that will be okay with you because you don't have to subscribe.

We can expect to hear not a peep when you get an email from the Ron Pauls, a little note to acknowledge one or your relatives was inspired to donate by their conversations with you. The email ostensibly to irritate you but you cannot be irritated because you know you can always go 'boink' unsubscribe.

Love the ones that make you enter your email to unsubscribe to the email they sent you.

Mumpsimus said...

Nice catch, policraticus.

I wonder if we'll see any more Tolkein quotes from Obama. Maybe “The authority is not granted you to deny the return of the king!”

Or "Fly, you fools!"

It's all that is needed.

Don't like the emails? Don't fucking subscribe to them! The email is no different than thousands of other political emails asking for money. How can an email be stalking you when you choose to receive them?

Garage said:

"Don't like the emails? Don't fucking subscribe to them! The email is no different than thousands of other political emails asking for money. How can an email be stalking you when you choose to receive them?"

The main point of the post is to generate hits. Why would you unsubscribe from a money maker? Feel that hook in your mouth?

The second point is to demonstrate how creepy it would be if you liked getting such stupid shit except for money (or amusement), or worse yet, coughed up a few bucks so that Michelle, (apparently your best girl friend, because you guys are "us") wouldn't have regrets.

Did anyone read the latest missive? The subject line is "I know, I know, I know," and it's the most self-conscious begging letter I've ever seen.
