"Why isn't Althouse covering the fact that two daughters of two famous liberal Democrat Senators - both 51 years old - died on the same day?"

"More importantly, why isn't Althouse making note of the fact that today is Constitution Day and that, exactly 75 years after the Constitution was signed, on the bloodiest day on our soil, 3000 Americans fell at Antietam in a war where Constitutional issues were paramount?"

Comments from the previous post.

ADDED, the next day: I'll answer the 2 questions.

1. I'm not inclined to savor the cuteness of the coincidence. Two women died, too young.

2. On the Althouse blog, every day is Constitution Day.

Why isn't Althouse covering the comments in the story about Althouse covering the comments form the last story.

I want some attention too.

Damn good thing that Jefferson wasn't part of the insider clique framing the Constitution because his role in framing the "Rights of Man" show a lack of insight into how humans could work in a constitutional setting. ITW: Jefferson was an authoritarian disguised as a Liberal person,

The daughters of Edward Kennedy and Walter Mondale both died and both were 51 years old. I thought it sad and weird.

Anyway, sorry for thinking it worthy of a post - rather than say, Cat Poo and Testosterone.

Althouse knows her audience. We all know what gets ratings: Sex, Food, Sports, Babies, Pets, Movie/TV stars, and of course Cat poo.

Jefferson's didn't participate in drafting the Constitution but he did originate the idea of "Separation of Church and State."

BTW, I often wonder whether Jefferson would've supported the Confederacy or stood by the Union.

Maybe she has a life? And some editorial sensibility?

Jefferson was way up there, doing things like the Declaration of Independence and the Jefferson Bible, while the rest of the founders were way down there, doing things like the Constitution.

No doubt you covered all this on your "blog," rc. Right?

Why isn't Althouse giggling on the sofa with Meade, a glass of serviceable wine and a great movie?

Seven,

My blog has never been covered in cat poo.

RC -- You are here, with me. No one's at your site. No one's at my site. We are the indirect object of the indirect object of the pronoun in the sentence.

I have to say comments to the "Cat Poo & Testosterone " post are among the funniest I've ever seen.

Its a regular Rorschach test

Paddy O said...

rcocean, my sense is that with so many comments and suggestions, that to get a post like this means she thought it interesting too but didn't have anything to say about it.

Because it is interesting. Seems significant. But in that seems like it should be significant but may just likely be a weird coincidence sort of way.

Sometimes the universe is entirely strange, suggesting deep meaning but not offering any sort of satisfaction.

Also, you need to add Palin to your list of audience grabbing blog topics.

rcocean said...

Paddy,

Palin is currently a ratings grabber but I think Perry will replace her.

Perry does not have broad appeal.

He'll lose the election if nominated.

Not saying Palin would win either.

My dad died a few weeks ago, why didn't Ann cover that?
Some people just love to complain about nothing.
Next thing you know, some people will want Ann t cover the Maryweather-Ortiz fight tonight, and all of the sociatal implications.

You mean the South gets a recount?

Then, tell West Virginia to cough up it's two senators! Because all Virginia had ... before it quit ... was two senators!

To fill the hole of their departure Abraham Lincoln signed West Virginia into law on his own in 1861.

Carol_Herman said...

Sad about Ted Kennedy's daughter. And, Mondale's daughter. Do you think they're finding out if their dads still talk to each other?

Carol_Herman said...

Maybe, November 2012 will be an "oscar" Weiner contest?

I don't think Anthony Weiner cares that his seat went to a republican. And, I don't think he wants a new cell phone for Christmas, either.

Harsh Pencil said...

I very much doubt Ted Kennedy is talking to Walter Mondale, since Mondale is alive and Kennedy is dead.

But that is just a hunch.

So is the unification post of strained coincidences?

There are no coincidences!

Fred4Pres said...

Of course we can ask Trooper, what would Rickey Branch say.

Damn that was priceless.

on the bloodiest day on our soil, 3000 Americans fell at Antietam

Actually, about 21,000 men fell at Antietam, with nearly 4,000 dead. The war should have ended after that horrific day, but the incompetent General McClellan refused to press the enemy and let them escape back into Virginia.

George McClellan, an arrogant, knows-better-than-everyone buffoon who only makes things worse -- just the kind of guy that Democrats think should be president (election of 1864, where McClellan opposed the abolition of slavery and the platform of his Democrat Party called for an immediate cessation of hostilities and a negotiated settlement with the Confederacy).

Carol_Herman said...

You know, if you wanted to extend this history lesson ... Maybe, it's possible Ted Kennedy and Walter Mondale screwed their wives at exactly the same time. Both dropped eggs. At exactly the same time.

And, nature, taking its course ... produced two pregnancies, coming out at the same time.

I don't think either man said much about this. This stuff tends to excite, women, though. For some reason. Which I think has to do with eggs.

I often wonder whether Jefferson would've supported the Confederacy or stood by the Union
_______________

Jefferson did draft the Kentucky Resolution of 1798, which, in response to the Alien and Sedition Acts, asserted that individual states had the power to declare that federal laws are unconstitutional and void. The Resolution was later cited by the Secessionists.

Nevertheless, I suspect that Jefferson, like many Virginians would have been severely conflicted. Notwithstanding the Kentucky Resolution, he probably would not be in favor of secession (at least not to the extent that the impetus for it was to protect slavery), but he also would not be too happy about a federal army marching into and occupying the states.

With secession forced upon him by others, Jefferson might very well have come to the same conclusion as Col. Robert Lee -- loving the Union, but unwilling to countenance the U.S. Army fighting and killing Virginians and, so, choosing to defend Virginia against such aggression.

There were five Wisconsin regiments at Antietam: 2nd, 6th, and 7th Wisconsin (of the famous Iron Brigade), the 3rd Wisconsin, and the 5th Wisconsin, which was commanded by Amasa Cobb, the Speaker of the Wisconsin State Assembly.

Cobb's grave is in Lincoln, NE, in case any of you latter-day so-called Wisconsinites want to go pour beer on it and scream "Republican! Republican! Republican grave over here!"

There were a lot more who died then 4,000.

23,000 died at Antietam. Bloodier then the War of 1812, the Mexican-American War, and the War of 1898 combined.

er...clearly I shouldn't post while sleepy. Casualties not equal to death. Bender was exactly right.

Couldn't agree more. Didn't mean to put you out, Ann.

PS Got the 3000 figure (they said over 3000, to be precise - actual number is about 3600) from StrategyPage, although Bender's right about overall casualties.

Don't know where Canuck gets 23,000 unless he assumes everyone wounded (and captured or missing) eventually died.

Thats correct as far as it goes, 4,000 dead but doesnt consider the 17,000 wounded which, statistically speaking, 1 in 7 died of their wounds adding another 2500 or so to that dreadful day.

In my HS classes I celebrate Constitution Day by pointing out that Congress has no right to order me to teach about the Constitution- (my principal DOES have that right, IMO) I also feel, and have communicated this to my elected representatives, that it's an insult to me - it assumes I WOULDNT teach the Constitution unless so ordered- it's there in pretty much every lesson I teach!
In addition to Antietam, 17 Sept is the anniversary of the opening salvos of Operation Market Garden in 1944- Field Marshal Montgomery's ill-fated plan to end the war by Christmas- meanwhile half a world away Marines were taking the airfield on Peleieu.

ganderson said...

Also- I agree with Bender- McClellan could've ended the war that day- if Sherman had been in charge he would have.

So no one else died on the same day? Wonder if they had anything invested in Solyndra?

No one cares about the deaths of the daughters of poltroon politicians. Unless they died in alphabetical order.

Constitution Day was barely covered in the media. If it was up to them there would only be one article in the revered document- the First Amendment. They do not care about the rest.

There are a lot of interesting things the professor doesn't cover. I wonder about that from time to time.

But there are also a lot of different reasons for that choice that I can think of, and what she does cover seems to work, for her and her readers.

Kara Kennedy died on Friday. Eleanor Mondale died on Saturday.

Less weird.

P-51 crashes Friday, though.

Now more weird.

9 + 16 = 25
9 + 17 = 26

25 + 26 = 51

Really weird?

Eleanor Mondales chief claim to fame is that she had sex with the entire Washington Redskins offensive line when her dad was Vice President.

She was the one who named them the "Hogs."

Thus she is reponsible for about half of the contents of what Titus posts here everyday.

Yeah, it's annoying. And it's almost always done in an accusatory way. Not: I wish you'd blog about the X story so we'd have a place where it would be on topic to say something I'd love to say in the public forum you maintain so well. But: What?!!! No mention of X!!!!????!!!! You're talking about this shit instead!!!

The truth is, the subject of the division of household labor in marriage is one of the most significant subjects in human history and pre-history.

The subject of 2 minor celebrities dying on the same day is absolutely trivial.
