Starring at the battlefields full of dead, dying, and mutilated, he usually cries out..why do we deserve this, O JHVH? School districts have designated culture weeks wherein students adopt the religion, culture and dress of a ethnic group/country. The two exceptions are Christianity and Mormonism.

The thing that raised a question for me is that fact that this Psalm is about Israel. Jerusalem specifically. That is the city of God, according the Bible. Considering the activity and history of the Middle East, I think Psalm 46 was either an interesting choice or a dumb choice.

Did anyone else notice that Obama omitted only one part of Psalm 46? He omitted the words, "He says" before saying 'Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.' So whether by accident or intention, he makes it sound like he is claiming to be God.
Bloomie is a Nanny State Nazi of the 1st order, but he has also had 10 years of dealing with 100s of special interest groups, including religious ones, that demanded special privilege over 9/11 affairs.
Is it any wonder that Bloomberg is, dedicated lover of "blessed diversity" that he is - simply sick to death of all the groups and people demanding a say on all "9/11 matters"???
He read it like a campaign speech.

Actually, I rather like the President engaging in religious behavior. Let's go back to the days when FDR prayed for the success of D-Day:

The Psalmist may have been an eloquent scribe at times, but not..the most rational. Starring at the battlefields full of dead, dying, and mutilated, he usually cries out..why do we deserve this, O JHVH? Unlike the...noble Stoics..who would have said something like...I told you the judean's idea of a benevolent omnipotent Being was a crock, hermano.
Let's not forget that high school students -- who hardly qualify as "clergy" -- have been threatened with suspension, expulsion, or withholding of graduation if they were to do something like read the Psalms as part of a valedictorian speech or if they were to say a prayer at a football game.

I just watched Bush (PA and NYC)and Clinton (PA) and I was touched. (I am avoiding all the memorial pieces today. I went back and watched some from right after 9/11 and 5 years ago on youtube.)
I don't think I can bear watching President Obama wag his head back and forth and inflect the Psalm so wrong that I will have to bang my head against the wall the rest of the day.

in a sense I agree with you Bender--but what about a school with a multicultural makeup? Are the muslim students allowed to read from the Koran? Mormons, from the BoM? Do Hindu kids get to read like..a selection from the Vedas--say, A hymn to Varuna? Yeah.

@J you make a good point in that if they earned the right to speak through scholarship or the vote of their classmates, then whatever version of "prayer" or mention of their higher power is their right to speak. They are not speaking for the world, they are speaking for themselves of their own experience...seriously, what else does a 17 yr old have to speak about?
Bloomberg's remarks regarding the issue of whose prayer and whose clergy is just more progressive elitist nonsense...like small communities all over this country haven't shared churches and taken turns with clergy at every community sevice there is to note.
It is childish to act as if everyone is going to have their nose out of joint...and very ACLU to lay claim that if any one person's nose is out of joint over something, then it must be stopped. The "I'm offended" police need to shut up and sit down. The rest of the adults can figure out and take turns. And to be honest most kids understand taking turns too. Only Progressives and radical Islam things it should always be their turn...it's progs version of democracy and radical Islam's califate.

Obama's reading of the Psalm was just terrible. You get the feeling that he doesn't even think about or care about the words or the meaning conveyed by them.
Robotic. Stopping in weird spots. Unable to string the psalm's poetry together. Mispronouncing simple words like bow.....or corpsemen
It is almost like someone who doesn't speak the language but who is phonetically saying the words without understanding the meaning.

The words of the Psalm, in Obama's reading, are leached of all meaning or feeling or sense, and it becomes mere word hash.
Yeah, the President (Obama) has a "sing-song" approach or delivery that just doesn't work here.
His pauses needed to be lengthened.

They do in California schools.
School districts have designated culture weeks wherein students adopt the religion, culture and dress of a ethnic group/country. The two exceptions are Christianity and Mormonism.
Even in the liberal and ethnically diverse Bay Area there has been a decade long kerfuffle between atheists, parents and school boards. Everyone seems to be offended at some point. I guess that's a lesson unto itself.

Kind of ironic that Obama spoke the words from the psalm "...we will not fear.." while standing behind a large plate of bullet proof glass.
I liked the psalm and felt it fit the occasion. I didnt like the President's halting reading.

I suspect that Presidents are usually ill-served by their minions because they end up surrounded by sycophants. That problem only gets more acute when you add in a cult of personality, which was essentially the basis of Obama's campaign.
The thing that raised a question for me is that fact that this Psalm is about Israel. Jerusalem specifically. That is the city of God, according the Bible. Considering the activity and history of the Middle East, I think Psalm 46 was either an interesting choice or a dumb choice.

Respect the book you profess to believe in. It is not supposed to be just words on paper to you. You are to take them to heart and understand their meaning.
