The black spots moved. And, I like this shot better, because the flower is surrounded by green leaves.
Alas, the "rolls of purple" could be hemorrhoids. Nature wasn't kind to that flower. On the other hand? All body parts are essential to the whole. And, as long as the bees are welcome, here, nothing else matters much, anyhow.
What's a good bike for Madison and nearby trails? What rides nicely over the road, but also long distances over crushed limestone? What does Meade have or wish he had? What would spandex Biker Guy be riding if he lived way down in Belleville and commuting in everyday?
(I have a Trek road bike but am not convinced it's good over the long haul on crushed rock)
Here's a question: if the song The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald were to come out today, scant months after a tragedy like that, would people accuse Gordon Lightfoot of trying to "own" the subject? I think the timeline for such musical statements has changed in 35 years.
@MarkG, Long commute on a bike. I'm impressed. What problems are you having with the crushed limestone? Do you have extra cash to drop? I love my Trek 29" HiFi Deluxe for everything from Colorado rocky single track to Wisconsin rail-to-trails to peddling down State St and around the lake path. But it might not be the best bike for your needs. The folks out at the Madison Trek store have been a lot of help to me and we bought a nice ride for Mrs. Meade at Machinery Row. Williamson Bicycle Works have also treated us well. Hope that helps
My touring bike and regular commuter is the Surly Long Haul Trucker. Formerly named "Surly Mother Trucker"
I wish they kept the old name.
Surly is a kind of cool eccentric company with a limited, yet unusual line of bikes, verging on enigmatic. Check out some of the other models designed for some specific challenges of touring.
I don't know why Captain Clueless does this crap. He also comes to L.A. during weekday rush hour and drives right through town completely shutting down traffic, and adding hours to local commutes just for a fundraiser.
Of course CA is also one of the few places where he has a positive approval rating and is beating Perry by 24 points.
California is also bankrupt, leads the nation in lost jobs and businesses. We lost 4500 entire businesses last year. Many moved to Texas where they pay for Perry's budget now, and hire Texans.
I know what your thinking: Why do you stay there? Answer: My I.Q. is just north of 89. I'm a freaking genius here. Big fish in a small pond, and even idiots like great weather.
May I just say that this time is not even the 1970s, much less the 1960s, 1950s, 1940s, 1930s & etc. You--as in "one"--can't just go helping people in certain ways without great risk of assuming wrong consequences, and specifically with regard to Official Sanctions being wrongly prompted therein. The presumption of decent intent for individuals helping has gone away, and while there are some quite good reasons underpinning the way of that, there are very many more excellent reasons for mourning the unfortunate exchange. In terms of reality played out, it's neither an equal exchange nor one that's worked. Instead, unintended consequences rule all the way along the spectrum. That's not how it ought to work (is it?). But it is how it does work.
This is September 2011. Wishing that it is any other day and time (or era) than this day and time (and era) is sheer folly. Wishin' ain't gettin', and nostalgia only makes things worse.
You're welcome to your pies in the skies. Excuse those who refuse your pies in their eyes. We must see clearly to care for our own. Make sure your pies land first on *your* sown.

Long commute on a bike. I'm impressed. What problems are you having with the crushed limestone?
Thanks Meade. That's not my commute, I just threw that out there as the the kind of bike I'd like: very long distance but rugged enough to go off hardtop. I've ridden on crushed limestone, but something doesn't seem right about running my road bike over it.
My three sided car port that I ordered from Menards was delivered yesterday morning. Yes, Sunday morning. Checking the pieces needed to assemble the back wall, I noticed that I have two pieces that are 51" long and they should be (according to the list) 47" long. I'll now have to verify the length that they need to be and then cut them to the correct size.
I ride a 29-inch Marin mountain bike. It cruises perfectly fine on pavement and any other surface. If a pay a price in speed and efficiency on smooth surfaces I can't detect it.
While the text of the NOTAM for the Newark TFR is no longer posted, I'd be surprised if it was responsible for the delays. These TFRs are pretty much a standardized item, and none of the many I've seen restrict scheduled air carrier traffic. More likely, the culprit was the shutdown of the airport from 15 minutes before to 15 minutes after His Nibs' arrival, which is a separate thing from the TFR. If he was hopping around close to Newark in Marine One that might also affect New York TRACON's ability to move traffic.

I think Ann is hermanizing this photo topic.

Does this flower have a scent?

Well, it looks like the seemingly endless scorching heat in Dallas is finally breaking.
82 degrees right now, lots of north wind - the first coolish wind since literally early May - low of 63 tonight, low of 58 tomorrow night.
It has been an absolutely oppressive summer here.
I gotta get out of here.
Didya see that Bush granddaughter & niece, Lauren Bush, married Polo heir David Lauren today?
Yep, she's now Lauren Lauren.
I like it, whatever it is. And I missed Althouse all day!
I'm reading The Hunger Games. It makes me think lots about my kids.

... you can talk until you're blue in the face
I was pondering how garage might spin this into some political advantage.. and then I thought maybe I was unfair to him.. or something.

Oh, and the difference between a 26- and a 29-inch mountain bike on pavement is the difference between a Honda Civic and a BMW.

You get the sense that the End is Nigh. First Dowd dumped on "the One," now Salon too.
