"React to the greatness of the march... are you happy with it?"

Shit! That's funny!

Oh, well... Dutch won in the long run, didn't he?

And, I lived on the corner of Masonic and Haight for a while in San Francisco. I believe that's where the bus is turning at the end of the video.

To make this even more personal:

Years ago I played on the same bill in Woodstock with Alan Ginsberg.

It was, I believe up in the barn in Byrdcliffe.

Just about everybody I know from that era has passed on to the next world.

The hippies still drag that Beat shit out and flog it four or five times a year in Woodstock.

Kevin said...

Ah, yes. Ronald Reagan - the Governor Walker of his day.

Too bad Reagan was such a political loser.

Kirby Olson said...

Don't think the hippies had anything to offer except confusion: bad drugs, bad haircuts, bad parenting, bad literature, bad body odors, no sense of ownership of property or behavior, just a sense that any kind of restraint on one's whims was, like, man, a drag, man, like.

Hippies sucked then. Hippies suck now. Nothing has changed.

I once took a Creative Writing class from a prof who claimed to have been a great pal of Alan Ginsberg. He spent most of the class reminiscing about his adventures with Ginsberg and Ken Kesey...very tiresome. He also confided to us that he had been molested as a child. Needless to say, he spent almost zero time teaching people how to write, creatively or otherwise.

You either reacted with visceral disgust to the anti-rational hippy sixties...or you didn't. More than any other marker know the reaction and you know the person. I was there. That Ginsburg om om om horseshit. The horror of it.

Can you dig it, m-a-a-a-n?!

Nothing's changed.

For them, anyway, and now every issue is nothing but a vain attempt to recapture their "glory" days.

He won by pandering to a citizenry that was outraged by what these terrible, insolent ungrateful children were doing on the campuses.

Now those same "children" are terrible, insolent ungrateful old people.

Reagan: You have read about the report... that the campus has become a rallying point for Communists and a center of sexual misconduct. Some incidents in this report are so bad, so contrary to our standards of decent human behavior that I cannot recite them to you in detail.

Hmm, sounds familiar.

Doug C. Neidermeyer: And most recently of all, a "Roman Toga Party" was held from which we have received more than two dozen reports of individual acts of perversion SO profound and disgusting that decorum prohibits listing them here.

Speaking of the greatness of March, the Coltsfoot was out yesterday.

Mid-Ohio's first spring flower, anyway always the first one I see, by a few weeks.

It grows on one particular south-facing road embankment, which may push it along.

I arrived in Madison in 1975 and met lots of older students who just wouldn't/couldn't let go of whatever peripheral glory they thought they had achieved in the anti-war movement. That was tiresome!

Then, as a freshman living in a dorm in early 1976 some fool comes to my door seeking to raise funds for the defense of David Fine, who was then being prosecuted for the Sterling Hall bombing. Not only was I entirely unwilling to toss any coin to that effort, I was, like most dorm residents, completely broke. When the State Bar of Oregon rejected Fine's application for admission to the OR Bar in the 80's, and it was upheld by the Oregon Supreme Court, I applauded.

Madison still has remnants of that era (Ben Masel, Soglin) and that thinking. In the rest of the state (i.e., outside the 2nd district), and around the country they are a bad joke.

ShoutingTom.

If Dutch had a problem with the Cal Dance, he would have gone apeshit inside the Fillmore or Winterland.

On the other hand, looking back, he was a pretty good Governor and on topic today, put a bunch of earthquake regs in place after the Sylmar quake of 71 (though I was out of the country on business that year :)

We're still stuck with him though - he's a paralegal in Portland.

You're telling me.

I spent quite a few nights breathing in the... uh... atmosphere at Fillmore and Winterland.

OK, Reagan looks like a fuddy duddy in the clip. But why doesn't someone selectively edit the musings of Allen Ginsberg to make him appear as a pretentious asshole? There was more pretentious asshole in Ginsberg's character than fuddy duddy in Reagan's.

I'm a Shaaaaark said...

Because being a pretentious asshole is what makes someone a proggie hero. But being a "fuddy duddy"? That's evil.

At least now, square or not, we understand where Reagan was coming from. We still don't know where Ginsberg was coming from or going.

I'm saying I didn't think Ginsberg came off that great. Just letting him do his omm bullshit was good enough for me:

He was an idiot, no editing required.

Sad part is, as a Californian, the folks in Berkeley and their kin have thrown greater and greater temper tantrums down the years.

And California has died because of it. Hopefully after Brown's disastrous return to office is over we can get a grown up back in there.

I wish we could have a POTUS again who would speak as quickly as Reagan did back then. Listen to the way he says words like "activity". Short, sharp, and easy to discern. Most POTI get coached into speaking unbearably slowly.

Somehow, that video made me think of this:

(She was living in a single room with three other individuals.
One of them was a male and the other two, well, the other two were females.
God only know what they were up to in there.
And furthermore Susan, I wouldn't be the least bit surprised to learn that all four of them
habitually smoke marijuana cigarettes... reefers)

Reagan and those supported him in Calf may have "Won in the long run" in the sense he was elected POTUS, but its the 60s Berkley lefties that won in Calf "in the long run".

Over time they took control of the U of C education system, the state and most of the local governments and turned Calf from a state that voted for Nixon, Reagan, Ike and Ford into the bluest of blue states. 55 EV every 4 years for the Dems.

My Favorite is the pothead in the middle who talks about Reagan "pandering".

These idiots demonstrating in Wisconsin are worthless, dishonest human beings.

California is not "the bluest of blue states", although we are in the top ten.

I think March is going to be glorious.

I believe the very first time I visited Madison to check it out as a high school student, there was a fellow dressed in a silver "space suit" costume, standing on something in the library mall. With prop in hand, he said he was from California and had come to Wisconsin to warn us about Mr. Ray-Gun who was running for the Repub presidential nomination.

That was a very appropriate public service announcement on what to expect in MadTown. And who said there are no prophets among us...

It would appear that introducing Ronnie and Nancy is none other than Chuck Conners, a.k.a. Lucas McCain - "The Rifleman".
