It's one more hour here (well, 36 minutes). I hope I can finally make it this year.
A couple years ago we celebrated New Years in Alamos, Sonora. Midnight brought so many gun shots, so many "pings" as the bullets hit the buildings or sidewalks. We took the kids inside, thinking the tar paper roofs would protect us, and apparently, they did.
A very happy, splendid, and peaceful New Years to you all.
May you find a job if you need one (Lem? Palladian?), and otherwise prosper and be in good health (the Blonde and KentuckyLiz in particular) and generally be blessed, everyone.
Sounds starting at exactly midnight, as recovered at 3am.
First actual gunshot was a probable drunk at 11:51:25. Then mostly quiet until midnight + 20 seconds gunshot sound travel time, plus whatever time it takes to stumble out the door.
A big Happy New Year to all the Althousians and the Meadhousians. May we all smile a little more.

A big Happy New Year to you, too, for wishing what we both need.
PS Got the pups through this one fairly quietly, rh. Must be because it's so warm and soggy here.
I didn't hear any gunshots last night, but we did have a long doggy night. And there's always some fool tossing a few cherry bombs as late as 1:15am.
Now comes the long gray of winter through February. Ash Wednesday is the second Wednesday in March this year. I expect it will start to feel a lot like spring around that time.
Fell asleep before midnight, was awakened around 12 by gunfire. Here in the ghetto it happens every year. Hundreds of rounds fired - semi-automatic pistols emptied in quick succession punctuated by the basso reports of 12 gauge shotgun blasts. Could hear small arms fire for a long time, some of it quite close by. I didn't return fire - ammo is too dear and in two weeks I close on a house in a county west of here - more land, no section 8 neighbors, and most of all, peace and quiet. Not worth wasting ammo on a situation that is already finite.
Happy new year to all - I know mine will be better.
Thanks for putting that up, rh. Very cool. So that's for recording birds, also?
Congrats, DBQ! What a special time. Mine are 22 and 19, and I'm in no hurry ;) I'm still recovering from raising them (and it's miles to go before I sleep, if you know what I mean).
What day is this? The last thing I remember is 2010. Last night the Michigan football team, their coaches and families plus Michigan Football Security guys walked single file through the lobby where we were sitting down between dances. Some players tipped their hats and smiled at us and the Michigan fans all around us. They each were carring two gift bags and a red Power-aid. bottle, headed downstairs to a buffet meal. Their faces were as serious as could be. The fans were telling us that Coach Rodriquez was gone and the Stanford coach was coming to take over Michigan unless the 49ers out bid MSU for his services. We met two thirty something young men that were MSU grads. One flew in from LA and the other drove down from Atlanta. Super guys that listened and responded to an old guy talking about TCU's Rose Bowl game.
edutcher, thanks for adding Irene to the good health list.
I knew there was someone else in my mind someplace. That and we want bagho2o's liver to keep livering. And TradGuy, you too... may you keep dancing with your wife this year!
I figure it's New Year's all day,m even though the Professor has moved on to being a weather station here's one of our time zone stories my husband reminded me of when I was reading comments to him this morning:
Years ago we were at conference in the midwest and 3 of us were headed back to NY, having left after dinner and planning on driving through New Year's.
We stopped for gas just after midnight and I crawled out of the car and chirpily (yes, I chirped back then) said to the attendant (pre self-serve) "Hi!! We're your first customers of the New Year!" The guy gave me a really funny look as I headed off to the bathroom.
We were back in the car and heading down the road and were wondering what the look was about when we realized -- The guy had been pumping gas for over an hour in the New Year.
We had changed time zones and didn't know it.
So on certain occasions to this day one of us will sometimes find reason to look athe the other and say "Hi! I'm your first customer ...!"
Hey DBQ -- while I'm on a roll -- congratulations on the near imminent arrival of you grandchild!
We did the grandbaby thing this year for the first time. Previously all we had was a grand dog or two.
We actually scored big time this year -- youngest daughter had her first, a sweet baby girl.
Oldest daughter (17 years older) had HER first, smiley baby boy.
And adopted son and his wife adopted and brought home from Ethiopia his 6 year old great nephew -- after raising two girls of their own. Both smiley, sweet AND a live wire!

PS Ditto on JAL's wishes for good health for all who need it, especially KYLiz and Irene.

Peter,
You can try again at 11:01 pm. Happy New Year to everyone.
Happy new year to everyone:)
1/1/11.
One singular sensation, every little step she takes.
Happy new year all!

Next stop, Groundhog Day 2022.
Are ya kidding me, Tyrone? The next stop is Veterans' Day: 11/11/11!
Which is the date on which Bethesda Softworks promises to release The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, the sequel to TES IV: Oblivion.
Happy New Year to all in the Althouse...I offer a cup 'o kindness.
A Happy, healthy, and prosperous New Year to all!
I'm eagerly awaiting my first grandchild in mid January. (Although I'm sure my daughter is even MORE eagerly awaiting).
Wouldn't 1/11/11 be a great birthday to write down for the rest of your life?
Happy and prosperous New Year to everyone.
Damn.
I really thought my diet would last longer this year.
Well at least that's out of the way.
Happy New Year everyone!
It's presently 1ยบ on 1/01/11.
Blessings to Althouse, Meade, and the hillbillies, for the coming year.
I've been lucky to be among the many regulars in this Theatre of Topicks, as Sir Archy called it.
May their seasons be bright, their families well, and their insights wise.

Speaking of which, I can only hope Agent IT (or what ever Progressive Insurance is calling it now) remembered to fix that.
(ya hadda be there)
