"Bristol Palin was fixing a loose clip or an errant strand of hair for her mother...."

Oh! The injustice! Will the persecution of Sarah Palin never cease!

ADDED: "Over the past month, former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin (R) has quietly altered her case for the presidency in a savvy shift of rhetoric."

And then, the multiple shots of Sarah sanitizing and washing her hands suggests the former Gov is primarily concerned, above all humanitarian else, about catching something.

I mean, how dare she practice universal precautions. Doesn't she know real compassion means transmitting infection from patient to patient!?

ooo, 3 exclamation points. I detect snark.

You don't think the media has it in for Palin?

No.

Stan said...

Just like the NY Times reporter who deliberately and knowingly lied about Bush I and the grocery scanner. Or the many, many times when photographers have orchestrated shots with a handful of demonstrators to make it look like a large crowd in their photo.

A picture is worth a thousand lies.

Ann, this isn't persecution of Palin particularly. This is just standard run of the mill left-wing propaganda in the news media.

Rialby said...

Ann is going for another 250+ comment thread. Good luck!!!

I guess this guy is hoping to do the same to Sarah as that video of John Edwards fixing his own hair when he was a candidate.

Except John was fixing his own hair. Intently.

Misty said...

I hope the press keeps up bashing Ms. Palin. It only makes her look better as they are shown for their own pettiness, ugliness, and prejudices.

DaveW said...

It's not about persecution. It's about deliberately misleading people (lying).

Stan said...

Ann, are you familiar with the story when The Tennessean took an old photo of a crowd cheering at a campaign rally, blew it up, and cropped it into a tight headshot of a candidate for the legislature. Out of context, it looked like she was screaming at the top of her lungs. They put the photo on the front page, above the fold, a couple of days before the election. The photo was right next to a headline about abortion.

Legislative races don't make the front page of the Tennessean. But the staff of the paper had been involved in fundraising and campaigning for her opponent and they pulled out one last salvo to try to help him win.

Journalism we can be proud of.

Talking about Palin as a Too Exposed and Whiney Attention Seeker is the latest tack. After 18 months of a drumbeat of Palin ridicule, the sudden realization has dawned on the Government Enemydia what any trial lawyer could have told them: To the Victim goes all of the protection from bystanders( read independents). Sarah will keep stoking the fires of victim-hood showing herself as a stand-in for voters who are also feeling victimized.

Anonymous said...

So, what are your thoughts on feminism today?

Saint Croix said...

That second article is interesting.

I'm not sure whether to take Sarah at her word or not. She has her own PAC and has raised a lot of money. She's endorsed a lot of people in the midterm elections. She's in the public eye. She's certainly kept her options open, and laid the groundwork for a run.

I wonder who she thinks would be a better candidate than herself? I notice she's not mentioning any names.

Jindal? Rubio? DeMint? Jeb Bush? I wouldn't consider any of the Bushes to be Tea Party. Newt Gingrich, that's just bizarre. Who thinks Newt Gingrich is a tea party guy?

tim maguire said...

Not sure why the exclamation points.

Yes, in the grand scheme of things, being slimed by the AP and HuffPo is no great shakes; nevertheless, doesn't it seem a bit off, wrong, unprofessional, for these popular news sites to place more importance on taking cheap (not to mention deeply misleading if not downright dishonest) shots at a politician they don't like than on accurately reporting an event they themselves have deemed worthy of report?

Phil 314 said...

from your added link:

The lofty goal? Turning the main reason a Republican might oppose her into the primary reason for voting for her.

WTF? Why does this feel like How can I write a pseudo-analysis of Sarah Palin? I know, I'll make shit up

The relationship between Sarah Palin and the press is feeling more and more like the one between George and Martha.

(No not that George and Martha, this George and Martha.)

"To the Victim goes all of the protection from bystanders( read independents)."

Maybe it will do as much good for her as Kitty Genovese.

Freeman Hunt said...

The lesson from the press is this:

"Conservative Women, do not go near politics until you are old."

That's the only way you can minimize the fallout damage to your family.

What say the "feminists?"

Freeman Hunt said...

If you think the ceaseless attacks help Sarah Palin, go ask someone who is not into politics what he thinks of her.

"She makes me laugh."

"She's entertaining."

"Ha ha ha."

They've turned her into a joke.

I'm not a Palin for President supporter, but she's certainly not a joke or a fool.

traditionalguy said...

The breathless revelation in The Hill said that Sarah has now "added" a qualification that it takes another Reagan Conservative running for President ----Who is electable--- to have her stay in Alaska. That is silly. Only a Karl Rove would have thought that an unelectable candidate should receive the 2012 GOP nomination. That blurb just revealed another Bush operative at work. Go Sarah!

This is a standard Alinskyizing and the Lefties can't get over that it won't take. She should be sharing a trailer with Anita Bryant by now, but yet she still influences people.

What they don't get is that the next prominent Mama Grizzly will have a much easier time of it because of the hits Miss Sarah is taking now.

Saint Croix said...

Only two, The last should be a question mark.

JAL said...

What c3 said at 9:22 am.

I cannot fathom why there would a snark about her using hand sanitizer, washing her hands etc.

Un freaking believable.

Not only is there hand sanitizer outside every.single.hospital room in our local hospital where there in no cholera, it's inside the doors of all our chain grocery stores, Wal-Mart and other public places.

I get it -- where these people who write this tripe live is so pure and rarefied there are no germs. (And someone washing their hands is all about them!)

THE first lesson we had in nursing school was how washing hands -- thoroughly -- was THE ONE most important infection control there was.

It keeps you from getting or spreading annoying things -- and deadly things.

Kirk Parker said...

Althouse,

It's not important what this says about Palin--rather what it reveals about the press.

Ken B said...

A ridiculous bit of sarcasm from Althouse who takes umbrage at unfair and false characterizations of herself. More to the point, a revealing example of a reporter's willingness to be untruthful to score points. That seems relevant no matter whom it is aimed at.

The other thread where we were talking about the 2000 election took me to some pages where I was remnded about how Katherine Harris was portrayed by the MSM.

Go back and read the snarky description in papers of record about her makeup, looks, the whole deal.

You know what? We've had a decade of disgusting sexism from the big guys.

I hope they all fail. They deserve it for betrayingg their trust.

(My, I am in a foul mood this morning. My printer has decided to disassociate itself from my computer and it is driving me bananas. So I'll kick the closest dog. Especially because it deserves it.)

Here's the evidence of their hypocrisy: "the news we kept to ourselves", ie no attempt to report genuine instances of celeb's doing the same during the Katrina aftermath.

/via Bill Whittle

"But Sean Penn can take himself, an entourage and a personal photographer – that’s three or four people in a four-person boat – and show us all how incredibly big and down-home he is by sailing off a few feet to rescue people, before the boat sinks from the incompetence of failing to put in the drainage plug. He wore a very nice white flak vest, instead of the passé orange life preserver, because getting shot at is a lot more macho looking, if a million or so times less likely, than drowning because you went out into the water with a lead vest rather than a life vest. It’s a scene in the trailer that runs incessantly in their heads: In a world run by evil corporations, a rebel who plays by his own rules starts a deadly game of cat and mouse with an all-powerful conspiracy in this searing portrait of extraordinary courage in a life under siege, starring…me!

I was actually ready to publicly commend the guy, until I heard about the personal photographer. If he wanted to help people – and that’s all – he could have paid for that boat, and a few hundred others, manned them with reasonably competent recreational boaters, and sent out a flotilla. But no. It’s not about having people saved. It’s about something else entirely. It’s about having people saved by Sean Penn. That’s when I realized that whether it’s the Murderous Regime in Iraq, or the Murderous Regime in Iran, or the Murderous Storm in Louisiana…ultimately, it’s all about Sean Penn. Peace Be Upon Him."

Having been forced as a tot to spend hours in beauty parlors, waiting for my mother's hair to be done, I know what the process looks like, and it clearly isn't happening in that photo. There are just a bunch of folks standing around. Most people would realize that even an al fresco beauty shop would have a chair for the patron. Could the AP have tried to make a feeble joke? Is this simply part of the world epidemic of irony?

Last night on "The Fashion Show:The Ultimate Collection" the two teams had to design dresses for the Real Housewives. One group dressed the Housewives of Orange County and the other team dressed the Housewives of New Jersey.

What was really interesting was the fashion show where the woman walked down the runway. Orange County looked plastic. but the bims from New Jersey really rocked it and snatched victory from the jaws of defeat.

I bet Sarah and Bristol would have won if they competed.

Do I remember correctly that they attacked Bush for using hand sanitizer while he was visiting Haiti too? I think a couple other times too, after he shook Obama's hand once and another time or two?

I guess lefty pols don't use the stuff, or just not as directed.

I didn't use the stuff myself until several years ago when my wife was in the hospital. They wouldn't let me in the recovery room until I used it. Still, I just wash my hands the old-fashioned way. But then again I'm not in a cholera ward.

Freeman, I can't speak for any feminist other than myself, and I'd say that message goes out to most women in politics. And once they're older, they'll be critiqued for looking frumpy or using Botox, too. In Louisiana, the press took to calling Dem. Gov. Blanco "Mee Maw" and the Queen Bee - both comments on her age and gender.

Feminists ought to take that more seriously, those that work to get more women running for office. It's a mistake to believe the press is more liberal than lazy: if it's entertaining and easy to take shots at Palin for her looks, or her family or whatever, it's easy to do that with any woman in a public role.

Indeed. If I was surrounded by thousands of cholera infected people I'd be concerned too. Wasn't Rahm Emmanuel seen vigourously rubbing hand sanitizer after pressing flesh in Chicago?

This is unbelievable, even coming from the AP and Huffpo. Did anyone read the comments in the UK article? Unebelievably vile and disgusting. My faith in the redemption of liberals is pretty much gone.

You guys need to get over your persecution complexes.

The guy who took the photo and made the observation was a Haitian. He barely knew who the hell Palin was, so there's very little likelihood that he had it out for her.

When Palin intentionally keeps the press away, the press can hardly be criticized for not knowing what the heck is going on with her.

Of course, Palin doesn't want the press to know anything, she just wants them to play publicists for her.

"That photo and caption set off rabid attacks on Palin from the Huffington Post, the U.K.'s Daily Mail and, of course, Palingates."

Nice try. But learn to read.

Andrea said...

Ah, pointing out the truth (Palin's daughter was fixing her mother's hair -- Palin wasn't having it "done by a hairdresser"; using hand sanitizer and washing your hands after visiting people with cholera -- a highly communicable, dangerous disease -- is common sense, not signalling "Ew, Haitians are dirty black people!") is us having a "persecution complex." That's stupid even for a lefty. Try again, "Darklady."

And actually, the AP reporter isn't to blame, and no one said so -- it's the Daily Mail and Huffington Post people that are the ones that ran with the "Palin is being a pampered celeb in poor, disease-ridden Haiti" bandwagon. The AP reporter only stated a fact -- that Palin was having her hair "done." I'm sure Haitians, who are very family-oriented (unlike most leftists apparently) are quite familiar with daughters and mothers tending to each others' hair, and thought nothing of it. It's the liberals, leftists, and progressives -- you know, the ones who Care About The People -- who freak out at any normal family activity they see.
