"Now, like, I'm President. It would be pretty hard for some drug guy to come into the White House and start offering it up, you know?"

"I bet if they did, I hope I would say, 'Hey, get lost. We don't want any of that.'"

H.W. was a good President.
I miss the old GOP. Pre 1990

I miss Reagan, H.W., and Clinton. We had a good 20 year run with those guys.

When I read the quote I thought it was Obama speaking, when he tries, you know, to be "down with" an audience.

Was that was Althouse's intent?

GHWBush quite frequently came up with the most bizarre responses, like a superannuated boy scout troop leader instructing ten year olds on pitching a tent but never quite getting to the point; all you can think is Whaa-a-a-a? and hope your folks come and pick you up early.

I miss him yet.

1. Ran across it looking for something else, and it just made me laugh a lot.

2. Nostalgia.

3. Made you look.

Obama's from Chicago.

They can still get blow delivered into the White House whenever they want.

Heh.

Monkeys always loooook. Monkeys always loooooooooooook.

Miss him yet?

The quote I was looking for was: "

"You cannot be president of the United States if you don't have faith. Remember Lincoln, going to his knees in times of trial and the Civil War and all that stuff. You can't be. And we are blessed. So don't feel sorry for — don't cry for me, Argentina. Message: I care."

Here's why I was looking.

"These, they're very dangerous. They trap you. Especially these furry ones...it's these furry guys that get you in real trouble. They can reach out and listen to something so — keep it respectful here."

It's even funnier that he said it to to Arnold Schwarzenegger

That's great.

That link is supposed to go directly to Meade's comment.

If Obama had said it, we in Chicago know it would be another big lie. If some drug guy came into the White House and started offering up envelopes of cash, free game tickets, Nintendos for the kids, fur coasts for Michelle, etc. Obama would be there with both hands out.

Whatever he could not grab, Rham Emanuel and David Axelrod would be taking. There would probably be a three way fight over the loot.

That is the Chicago way!

My personal favorite:

"It has been said by some cynic, maybe it was a former president, 'If you want a friend in Washington, get a dog.' Well, we took them literally — that advice — as you know. But I didn't need that because I have Barbara Bush."

That was of course Bush 41. Bush 43--not as dumb as they said he was--learned not to call his wife a dog.

If you're worried about caribou, take a look at the arguments that were used about the pipeline. They'd say the caribou would be extinct. You've got to shake them away with a stick. They're all making love lying up against the pipeline and you got thousands of caribou up there."

This (and the other quotes, but especially this one) totally made my day. Seriously. I was still in grade school in the H.W. Bush days, so I had no memory of any of this. I was sorely deprived.

Thank you, Althouse!

Doesn't it say somewhere in the Bible not to hide your light under a Bushel?

How bout a little Visual Althouse in a little black dress for those of us not worried about being medicalized.

41 was a good man, but, like his son, he played by the pre-Alinsky rules and got Alinskyed by the people who were as stellar devotees of Uncle Saul as the Obamas.

We had 12 years. Willie was a coward, a punk, and as hard core a Lefty as Barry. Any "conservatives" who have Alzheimer memories might want to consider this:

Both Bush presidents had/have fighter pilot's disease. I worked for people like that for over 24 years in the Air Force. They are not stupid, they just can not talk straight. Talkers are not necessarily the best leaders, BTW.

Nowadays they just need to stop by during a state dinner.

I miss the Democrats of the 60s with their vigorous defense of American interests overseas.

And I mess the Democrats of the 60s with their tax cuts that unleashed the American economy.

Oh, I'm sorry, maybe I was just parodying someone who thinks to make snark by "missing" the GOP pre-90s (which includes RAYGUN).

Those kind of people don't "miss" something like that. They just have forgotten what they were saying in the 80s - that they missed the GOP of the 50s.

Miller,

I say enough to all of the Bush bashing. Let have some fun at Orrin Hatch's expense.

Hatch who was trying to stop people from violating copyright laws with their evil machines (computers), asked technology chiefs at a hearing in Washington about whether they could develop ways to damage or destroy the computers.

Hatch said damaging computers "may be the only way you can teach someone about copyright".

"If we can find some way to do this without destroying their machines, we'd be interested in hearing about that,"

"If that's the only way, then I'm all for destroying their machines."

Time for him to go. I hope he takes McCain with him.

Favorite GHWB story:

Before I got to my first squadron (1991), he visited them on the USS INDEPENDENCE.

The skipper was showing some lockers lockers marked with call signs.

CO: "Sir, when you were an aviator did you have a call sign?"
GHWB "...I guess so, they always used to call me 'sh*t for brains'."

Like his son, GHW Bush was a better writer than speaker. His letters are wonderful.

Reading these comments I realize what the elites hated about the Bushes: they were, for all their blue-bloodedness, plain-speaking, mean-what-they-say-and-say-what-they-mean-except-when-tongue-tied. They had no glibness. They weren't "smooth operators."

The elites fall for the superficial and glib every time. And I begin to loathe them for it. And our glib president.

George H. also had an unfortunate disconnect at times between what he was saying and what his facial expressions might make you think he should be saying...if that makes sense.
