MARIAH CAREY Don’t let yourself go, ’cause everybody cries and everybody hurts sometimes…
CHERYL COLE Sometimes everything is wrong.
MIKA Now it’s time to sing along…
Sounds like something from Sheri Lewis and Lambchop. Yep, when the whole world comes crashing around your and on your head, just sing along- Zippidy do dah, zippidy day...
The constant refrain of "everybody hurts sometimes" was just so inadequate in comparison to the scale of the pain experienced by the Haitians shown in the video. That lyric was insulting. I like C3's idea.
Well that's because they really don't. This is pretty much the equivalent of handing the homeless guy $5 thinking it's actually making a difference in his life but all it does is just make you feel warm and fuzzy inside.
Ten years from now they'll be holding specials on HATI: Ten Years On and you know what? It will be the same hellhole it was before the earthquake despite the billions poured into it.
I appreciate whatever anyone does that helps and don't care much about motivation, but do people really not donate until a celebrity sings? Does that make a difference? I hope so, cause they are gonna do it anyway. I just wish it wasn't needed.
I just cannot shake the feeling that the celebs are arm-twisted into doing this stuff because it is good publicity. I remember hearing behind the scenes anecdotes about bickering among the stars for camera time during the We Are The World recordings. I'd like to see the real financials from these events, too. "All profits donated to..." leaves a big loophole called "expenses."
The entire charity drive for Haiti is obscene. The vast majority of so-called charities are simply using Haiti to cash in. To be fair, it isn't possible to spend the money there and places like the Red Cross sure as hell aren't going to use the money for something useful, like physical infrastructure; say building a road or a hospital.
May as well predict now that in a few short years the Haitians are going to turn into ungrateful shits. As Hoosier says, the place will still be a shit hole, the Haitians will still be sitting on their asses not doing a fucking thing about it and it will be the fault of every country that dared help them.
Juxtaposing the glamour of Hollywood against the vastness of this tragedy is like using tinsel for a bandage. They mean well, but it seems wrong and a little surreal.

Hell, just look at Somalia.
Maybe not as bad as Somalia, which is of course 10 million overbred Islamoids armed to the gills with military weapons that hate and kill one another while demanding millions be let in to the USA with the help of soft-hearted Christians they hate - because every Somali is now a potential refugee from other Somalis.
But Haiti is plenty bad. Like Somailia, it is a Malthusian Trap with a high birthrate, and constant demands that their excess be dumped in countries where soft-hearted Christians weep to be allowed to "save them" - (at each American, Euro, or candanians dime) Asians are smarter of course. No "several hundred thousand noble Haitians or Somalis" will ever soil Japan or Thai or Chinese earth.
And like the Somalis, religious- fueled breeding is out of control. With the Roman Catholics the culprits instead of ISlam.
In ten years, unless they can do a mass dump of surplus people on other countries, Haiti will go from being 10 million people in an environomentally deteriorating land that can only sustain about 2 million people in 2010, up to 13 million in a land that is now only fit to sustain 1.8 million people. (Without all the free food, NGO money, free medical care, and remittances that keep this Terri Schiavo nation warm and breathing).

"heartrending outreach or charity porn?"
Yes.
Sigh. What can you say? If it raises money, great... but it's all so very, very eminently puke-worthy.

THIS IS WHAT THESE CELEBRITIES SOUND LIKE WITH THEIR CONSTANT CHARITY PRATTLE
Why don't they each just record a more "typical" song for them and donate all of the proceeds to charity.
I don't need to see that they really care.

c3,
Actually Andrea Bocelli and Mary J. Blige did just that. Bridge Over Troubled Waters. On itunes. All proceeds go to Hatian charity.
BTW, it is a great rendition.

No thanks!
Charity porn?
No, they're down payments for when the stars get caught drug-raping 13-year-old girls up the keister - ala Roman Polanski.
That way, they can convince the judge to only give them 3-month sentences, owing, you know, to their humanitarian outreach efforts.

Which reminds me of New Orleans...
