"The Waves Minority Judges Always Make."

Here's how the NYT teases its story:

What minority group did Sandra Day O'Connor belong to?

***

We women are the majority. If we are going to stock the Supreme Court according to demographics, we get the 5th seat. The men get 4.

O'connor was a minority when seen against the usual male only professional requirements. The rules to correct that oppression have now created the priviledged class of non-males. How dare women act equal without our permission! First we give them driver's licenses without restrictions, and then they want to drive, drive drive.

That's why the phrase is "women and minorities."

Depends on how you define the group (in her case, white women). Everybody's a minority in the US.

Fine with me, as long as some of them are hot chicks. Why do all the women on the SC have to be the judicial equivalent of Susan Boyle? I think Rihanna would be just as qualified to decide exactly when and under what circumstances you can have a Christmas tree at a gay wedding in a National Park, or whatever the hell they're deciding this term.

Arizonans, and by extension, Westerners.

The intersection of the sets of (legal scholars) and (hot chicks over fifty) is quite small. Our hostess may be the only member.

In the media and academic cultures of the US, the word "minority" does not mean "subgroup of lesser numbers", it means, "everyone but white heterosexual men". The chattering classes also project their provincial thinking onto the rest of the world, referring to 1billion plus Chinese as a minority, or calling Dominicans "African American". Therefore it makes complete sense to refer to the majority group (women) as a minority.

We women are the majority.

Because men die younger, right?

And that's supposed to make us feel more sympathetic toward women?
