Habeas corpus denied.

It is not the way to get your daughter not to live with her boyfriend.
"I am a major and no one can tell me where to go or not. I am committed to being with my friend and he will take care of me. Please escort me to the main gate of the court and I will manage my life from there".

These are Indians, no Pakistani's. The artile implies that the case is in Rajasthan, which is majority Hindu.

The Hindu's don't have your classic Honor killing problem, though their widows used to interact negatively with funeral pyres. More on that in a sec

General Napier on the custom of Sutee:

You say that it is your custom to burn widows. Very well. We also have a custom: when men burn a woman alive, we tie a rope around their necks and we hang them. Build your funeral pyre; beside it, my carpenters will build a gallows. You may follow your custom. And then we will follow ours."

love the guy :)

If it was in a muslim area, she would be forced to marry a sixty year old man as his fourth wife, raped and if she disagreed be stoned to death.

If it were in Utah they'd be made to wear funny archaic clothing and little girls would marry old men.

Yes, but it actually makes *sense* when she plays it. The government of Utah actively goes after "fundamentalist" Mormons.

This article is confusing. The woman is twenty-nine years old but referred to as girl. the judge allows the girl to go anywhere she wants with police protection? Is she under threat by her family or what? She asserts her independence but requests to be escorted to the front gate of the court. Is that a way of saying the propriety she views as stilted ends immediately outside the court gates or that she needs an escort to get there?

You throw in a few where ever instead of wherever, asked the girls instead of asked the girl, since she was living with her boyfriend since five years, repeating the word since instead of using the word "for," and I'm lost. Is she a major as in the army or is she a major as not a minor? No wonder she wants to get out. It's too confusing.

Having spent a fair amount of time in Rajasthan, I agree that some customs have changed considerably over the past few decades.

Nevertheless, certain attitudes have not yet evolved much. This is one gutsy young lady.

My guess is the latter. And she's a major not a minor, i.e., an adult who is not under her parents' guardianship.

The Drill SGT and Ms Carson:

Honor killings are very much a fact of life within Hindu society. This Google link may provide some enlightenment.

Honor killings may attach to certain religious groups, but the phenomenon can be more profitably viewed threw the lens of tribalism than religion. I knew a Christian Arab who slew his sister to save his family's "honor". It was a matter of their honor, within the tribe. That their honor wasn't worth as much as a human life didn't sink through their religious educations.

Cultures and countries with laws based upon primitive societal beliefs; these are people Obama wants to appease and do business with?

Hmmmm? How soon before we have the Taliban bedroom in the WHite House?

Humph. I'm surprised nobody's tried to claim we have one already.

Peter: we'd be idiots not to make India our very bestest friend right now, and it doesn't matter who has the presidency. You work with the geopolitical situation you have, and try to create change you want over time.

U.S. Embarks On India Alliance--With Care

US strategy has been a US-India-Japan-Australia alliance in the region in part as counterbalance to the emerging economic and military power of China.

With China's emergence as an economic giant these alliances may fray with countries doing more business with China.

This was a good court outcome for the Emancipated lady. FYI the Indian sub-continent is a functioning democracy dealing in financial reality. The education system, established by the English, uses the English language to create a common language over a country that speaks 17 separate native tongues. The religious issues are also negotiated on the basis of Toleration since 1000+ gods are worshiped in various family and regional areas. Christianity has a 20% presence in several Southeastern provinces from churches established by missionaries since 1500. They are THE enemy of the Mohammedan conquest, defending themselves from Pakistan etc. on the West and Indonesia on the East. Mohammedans have never done Tolerance of another faith very well especially whenever Mohammedans have seen a chance to conquer an area and steal everthing there "for God".

Writs of habeas corpus used to be used here in conflicts between parents and husbands involving minor wives (under 21).

If the marriage was valid, the husband got to keep her.
