She was not a member of the independence party. The NY Times corrected that. She has been a registered republican since 1982.

Apparently her husband was. If he says that he's proud of America for the first time in his life, I'm calling shenanigans.

Was she hit with a hockey stick in the mouth? Did that cause the gap between her teeth? I wanted to hurl some enamel at her....

Brutus, exactly. But look, it's even worse. The rumor was that she was a member of the AIP... in the 90's. Like 94-96 or something like that. How But Heather has now morphed that into being a member last year. She can't even get the false story straight.

LOL, can you just imagine the frothing at the mouth we'd be seeing if this was true of Michelle Obama? Y'all would be wigging out and you know it.

But for right-wingers. If a member of the right has ties to an anti-American group promoting Christian supremancy, that just increases her credibility.

Alaska uber alles?
by Paul Campos

"Here are a couple of questions for Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin: What do you think of the following statement? "I'm an Alaskan not an American. I've got no use for America and her dammed institutions." Or how about this one? "The problem with you John Birchers is that you're too dammed liberal!"

"These might seem like odd questions to put to a governor, but more than a few things about Palin, currently the GOP's presumptive vice presidential nominee, are very odd indeed.

"For instance, several members of the Alaskan Independence Party, including its chairman, say Palin was a member of the AIP in 1994 and 1995, and attended the party's 1994 biennial convention in Wasilla, where she was a City Council member, and would soon become mayor. The McCain campaign says these claims are false, while as of this writing Palin herself hasn't addressed the issue.

"What's not in dispute is that earlier this year she sent a videotaped welcome to the party's convention. And Palin's husband was a registered member of the party from 1995 until 2002.

"The AIP was founded by one Joe Vogler, who is described on the party's Web site as a "plain-spoken gold miner, nonpracticing attorney, and charismatic icon of local politics." Another way of describing Vogler, who disappeared under mysterious circumstances in 1993, is as a far-right lunatic, who believed that Alaska's admission to statehood was illegal, and that Alaskans should hold a referendum on whether to become a sovereign nation. (The quotes about American institutions and the John Birch Society are Vogler's.)

"This remains the official position of the AIP. The party wants to hold a statewide vote on whether to become a commonwealth, to remain (become?) one of the 50 states, or to become a wholly independent nation.

"In other words this is, to put it mildly, an extremist political group. And surely it's appropriate for someone on a major presidential ticket to explain her precise relationship to a party whose platform calls for a vote regarding secession from the United States."

Christ almighty Verso, an embarrasingly awful column by this hack. Particulartly the last part. For true belivers only.

Brutus said: "She was not a member of the independence party. The NY Times corrected that."

No, Brutus, you're getting ahead of yourself. The NYT didn't say she wasn't a member of the independence party — though I understand why you would wish to characterize it that way.

What the NYT did was issue a correction of a statement made by *a single source.* Because one source retracted one specific claim doesn't mean Palin wasn't a member of the group. Several other people are on the record claiming that she was a member, or attended their events.

The truth about Palin's participation in the ultra-right wing group is unclear, but here's what we know for certain: Her husband was a member.

And we know how Althouse commenters would be suffering uncontrolled apoplexy if the same were true of Michelle Obama.

Widmerpool said...

Verso,

Now I can see why you read a hack like Campos. The NYT story was based solely on a single source. That source has since stated she is mistaken. Therefore, there's nothing left of the Time's allegation. I would also note that these "other source" you mention apparently didn't pass muster with the NYT, since they were not included in the story.

I've never seen such a hysteria on the left before, even about Dubya. This woman scares the bejesus out of them.

Verso wouldn't know the truth if it bit him on the ass. (Though that might very well be the way he prefers to receive his truth.) Palin has been a registered republican since 1982. And here's documentation.

Alaska isn't the only recent state to have an independence movement.

I want to know what a certain Hawaiian born politician thinks about these folks, and whether or not he's willing to recognize His Royal Majesty Akahi Nui, King of Hawai'i.

The overthrow of the Kingdom of Hawai'i, and its subsequent annexation was clearly an illegal act, and should be rectified. If Sen. Obama wants to restore our standing in the world, he needs to right this wrong.

I would point out that people often register with a poltiical party when they are quite young, like when they get a driver's license renewed at age 18, and it might never change despite other affiliations and voting trends. I registered to vote decades ago when I was a Republican, and have not changed my registration since. Why should I? It doesn't affect which elections I can vote in. It has no impact on anything.

Unknown said...

Fuck you.

Having a vice presidential candidate associated in any way with a party that boasts the slogan "Alaska First — Alaska Always" could be a problem for McCain, whose slogan is "Country First." There's no documentary evidence now that Palin was a member. But the question lingers: was she a fellow traveler? - Mother Jones

Probably depends on who you ask.

Meanwhile, I thought this conservative made a good point:

"All that the evangelical and Catholic conservatives care about is opposition to abortion. All that's required for them to be happy is an illegitimate or defective pregnancy, followed by birth. They have no vision of social order, no vision of an overarching good, but have reduced all goods to the good of avoiding abortion. Which means that they embrace every kind of disorder, so long as rejection of abortion is thrown into the mix.

"As I've already pointed out, the subject here is not the personal situation of Bristol. The subject is that a woman with Bristol's situation in her family should not be running for vice president. A woman with an illegitimately pregnant 17 year old daughter should have kept it private by not running for vice president. Instead, she brings it before the world, requiring all Republicans and conservatives to approve of the situation in order to maintain their support for her.

"The distinction between private and public has completely ended. The public sphere has been completely subsumed by the private sphere. So that if someone's messy private sphere meets the conservatives' requirements and presses their buttons (Palin's daughter's illegitimate pregnancy, followed by marriage and birth), then the conservatives celebrate that person and approve her for the second highest office in the land."

Unknown said...

Actually, not every member of the AIP supports independence. But there's no doubt that it has more than its share of wackos. That's one of the larger problems with the Libertarian party, too. Plenty of well-meaning small-government types but also far too many conspiracy theorists for many people's comfort, too.

Henry said...

So Mr. Palin has some sagebrush rebellion in his past.

Yawn.

Unknown said...

Ah. So you really want to hitch your wagon to Laurence Auster, Verso? Whatever.

Anonymous said...

Let me reiterate something else:

The NYT has not reported or confirmed that Palin was never a member of the far-right, America-hating secessionist group her husband was a member of for many years.

It simply corrected bad information it got from a single source.

Those are different things. The difference is important. And if you are aware of the difference but gloss over them and claim Palin was never a member of the group, you're lying.

At the very least, her husband was a member. And we all know perfectly well -- don't we? -- what kind of fits the right would be having if Michelle Obama even looked in the direction of such a fringe political party.

But I understand: there are different rules for Republicans. You all trust her MORE because of her far-right, anti-American associations. You know, as conservatives, that her anti-American ties can be properly contextualized as consistent with Republican loathing of government, and (as her defenders are saying) "states rights."

I'm not saying it won't work. Lying can be a successful strategy. But please, I hope at least you're not fooling yourselves.

Widmerpool said...

Verso,

These smears peddled by lefties always seem to follow the same pattern, and yours is no exception:

1. Allegation made by source.

2. Source is discredited or admits mistake.

3. But this doesn't prove the charge is actually false ('cause who knows?) and therefore it's up to the smearee to produce definitive, incontrovertible evidence to refute.

4. Smearee fails to meet this high standard.

5. Therefore original charge is true.

Andrew Sullivan has made a career of this recently.

The federal government controls very high percentages of the land of many western states. Here in Utah and Colorado, liberal fear mongers are locking up oil shale and other natural resources. Bill Clinton unilaterally created a national monument, locking up more natural resources.

Many of us who support the United States, still openly wonder when enough will be enough. I for one, favor splitting the US in two at the Mississippi.

For those who wonder, the top 10 list of states with the highest percentage of federally owned land are:

1. Nevada 84.5%
2. Alaska 69.1%
3. Utah 57.4%
4. Oregon 53.1%
5. Idaho 50.2%
6. Arizona 48.1%
7. California 45.3%
8. Wyoming 42.3%
9. New Mexico 41.8%
10. Colorado 36.6%

Verso, I'm curious. When you write "Meanwhile, I thought this conservative made a good point..." does that mean that you agree with that conservative?

Specifically do you agree with the thesis of the second paragraph: "a woman with Bristol's situation in her family should not be running for vice president"?

If you agree with that, then speak up and elaborate.

If you don't, then what's your point? You seem to have found a surrogate for bigotry. Way to go, liberal.

From a sociological perspective, more logical borders would be either the eastern borders of Montana, Wyoming, Colorado and New Mexico. I'd bet, though, that the the stretch of North and South Dakota, Nebraska, Kansas, Oklahoma and Texas would want to join as well since they have more in common with the far west than the east.

(My western Canadian friends tell me that Alberta would be interested in joining such a nation and its possible that British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatewan, Yukon and Northwest Territories might also go along.

Mark DeMoss, former chief of staff to Jerry Falwell:

"Too many evangelicals and religious conservative are too preoccupied with values and faith and pay no attention to competence. We don't apply this approach to anything else in life, including choosing a pastor." Imagine, he said, if a church was searching for a pastor and the leadership was brought a candidate with great values but little experience. "They've been a pastor for two years at a church with 150 people but he shares our values, so we hired him to be pastor of our 5,000 person church? It wouldn't happen! We don't say, 'He shares our values, so let's hire him.' That's absurd. Yet we apply that to choosing presidents. It blows my mind."...

"To be clear, DeMoss isn't saying Palin is unqualified. "The reality is, we don't know - and neither does McCain if he only met her once." The other Christian leaders who rallied around her didn't know much either. "I'm not hinting something's amiss but we don't know her and the people who gave her glowing response Friday didn't know. The euphoric rush to anoint without knowing -- it's a dangerous thing."

But conservatives don't care. They got their culture warrior, and that's the only thing that matters.

Obama, the man himself, works with and has at least some level of friendship with an admitted domestic terrorist who declared war on the United States - no big deal.

There’s something about outspoken conservative women that drives the Left mad. Thus, the onset of Palin Derangement Syndrome in the media, Democrat circles, and the cesspools of the blogosphere came as no surprise. They just can’t help themselves.

Liberals hold a special animus for constituencies they deem traitors. Minorities who identify as social and economic conservatives have left the plantation and sold out their people. Women who put an “R” by their name have abandoned their ovaries and betrayed their gender. As Republican officeholders and conservative public figures who are women have grown in number and visibility, the progression of Conservative Female Abuse has worsened. The astonishing vitriol and virulent hatred directed at GOP Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin is the most severe manifestation to date.

That is because she is everything they want and she is everything they wish they could be. She can identify with a broad spectrum of women in the country and they can identify with her. She is as real as they come. She is not elitist, she worked hard- real work- she juggles her career and a large family, she is a sports mom, her husband is a blue collar worker, and on and on. In effect, she is what the majority of working women in this country are. Something Hillary Clinton was not and never had been. They have no one to compare to her. Biden is looking like a bigger mistake by the minute and Sebelious is looking like she should have been the better pick. Obama screwed the pooch with Biden.

The only thing they can do now is trash her viciously, as we saw this past weekend. They have nothing else left.

Hmm, well, moose are indigenous and arugula is from Italy.

People have been hunting moose in this part of the world for thousands of years, I first saw arugula <10 years ago.

Dead prepared moose tastes great with a plate of raw arugula. But not so much vice versa.

Ten pounds of moose is enough food for a man for 15+ days, not so much with arugula.

Yep, moose is superior to 'talian lettuce.

She can't even get the false story straight.

MCG, when I was reading the vile rumours this weekend on Kos, one person said that it doesn't matter if they are true or not -- the whole point was to destroy her reputation.

"10-12% of the American people think that the Twin Towers was an inside job

10-12% of the American people Palin is not the mother of her baby"

Is how the person put it.

Given the squelching of the Bristol rumour having been so successful, and the fact that bloggers can be every bit as navel-gazing as MSM are (sadly), I don't think the latter stat is true.

But that's what they are aiming for.

Wait, up, XWL. I agree, but remember that Todd Palin is bi-racial: he's got Native Alaskan blood.

Native Americans have served with honour and willingness in droves during all of American history. But the impulse for independence for their lands is sometimes very strong for them.

If Palin were a Democrat, their supporters would be falling over themselves in glee at getting to exploit his heritage as an anti-American cudgel, and alluding to the fact that the AIP is an equivalent of La Raza.

Thank God our side is nothing like that.
