All arches are but temporary features and all will eventually succumb to the forces of gravity and erosion.

This is so sad. I never got to see it. On Wed, Aug 6, one of my favorite sons-in-law remarked (in response to my camera's dead battery) that none of the features of Colorado's Monument Park could change before next year's visit.
'Tis rare one of my sons-in-law being wrong.

This must not go on!
The time to act is now!
We demand:
A government funded panel comprised of scientists and environmentalists to survey the problem and devise a solution to erosion and gravity, especially that caused by man. This will be followed naturally by the establishment of a new governmental bureaucracy to impliment their recomendations.
A fund established to retrofit and reinforce other natural monuments before they suffer similar fates. This will be funded by taxing the windfall profits of some industry or another, just as soon as we can figure who to extort.
An investigation of the Bush administration to figure out why they are intent on destroying our natural monuments.
If that arch had to be destroyed as the cost of saving The Fellowship of the Ring from the Balrog . . . well . . . it would have been worth the cost.
But that’s just a silly fantasy and this is the real world and Wall Arch fell and there’s no meaning in that. It just happened.
It’s a cold, hard fact that things of stupendous wonder and beauty turn out not to last forever.
So take a moment and hug your kid too hard and for too long. Tell your special someone you love him or her in a way you never did before and make sure they know why you’re doing it. Pull the car over to the side of the road. And get out. And walk around. After all . . . there’s a rainbow there . . . you just have to spend a little more time.
Drink it all in.
As much as you can.
Because nothing lasts forever.
Nothing.
Time marches on and the world changes from cold to warm to "whatever".
Trying to preserve the ecology and the environment in amber isn't going to work. Somethings will fall(the arch) and fade away. Some areas will become dry. Others will become wet. Species will die....yes...including we frail humans and will pass the way of the dinosaurs. We will give way to more adaptable organisms

Fear not. Future wonders are forming as we grieve. They'll just be for others.
Besides, there are extant natural formations -- worldwide -- you can still go see (Monument Valley comes to mind). of course, if you didn't care about this one until now, you may not care about those. either.
This speaks volumes for the necessity of wearing good supportive shoes.
Not to mention the necessity of getting the hell out of St. Louis before it's too late.

i heard Dr. Scholls is going to help the St Louis from ever falling. they are working on a new form of arch support. The gel supported insoles seem to have to much give, with the resent rising waters. There is a reported issue of falling arches in St Louis, with the 2 hour wait to get in the Arch. LOL
