The Church of Dog.

Doesn't this violate the constitutional requirement for the separation of kennel and state?

This is only part 3 of a bizarre sermon in praise of Dog. For parts 1 & 2, plus commentary, go here.

For an previous discussion of Senator Byrd's devotion to Dog, go here.

Byrd Dog
( Everly Brothers )

The Senator is a joker (he’s a Byrd)
A very funny joker (he’s a Byrd)
But when he takes my money (he’s a dog)
His jokin’ ain’t so funny (what a dog)
The Senator is a joker that’s a’tryin’ to steal my money (he’s a Byrd dog)

Okay, I made it to the three-minute mark, and that’s something of an achievement for someone so easily bored as myself, but I don’t deserve any credit, since I forced Mrs. Bissage to come over and watch the video along with me. I couldn’t have done it alone.

One thing though, viewing the Senator’s tribute to “DOG” becomes less painful, and even somewhat amusing, if every time he says the word “DOG” you imagine the former Kleagle and Exalted Cyclops of the Ku Klux Klan saying the word “niggrah.”

Go ahead. Give it a try. It’s fun and I'll start you off: The affection that a [niggrah] provides is unlimited, unqualified and unconditional. Ever the loyal companion, [niggrahs] protect us, assist those of us with afflictions and provide hours of enjoyable companionship.

Who says a leopard can’t change its spots?

Why Senator Byrd, you dear old goat, you, you’ve done gone and turned yourself into a big old [niggrah] loving softie!

I thought we were talking about Dog the Bounty Hunter. That would have been more interesting.

This guy is a textbook Slow Talker. Gah, I didn't have the patience to last more than a sentence and a half.

Slow talker? More like: crazy talker. And he was reading from a text. Who wrote that for him?

Holy crap. Is he using 100 point font or something at 5 words per page? How many trees have died to keep that man employed? Or is this just a senility-induced ramble, and those papers merely remind him where he is/to breathe/that he's speaking?

Prof. Althouse: Slow talker? More like: crazy talker.

No, just a slow talker, and he has an excuse given his age.

He went overboard with the religious jive, but I don't see how this speech is "crazy" when he's: 1. Correct; 2. Backs it up with some substance.

Althouse links back to her previous ridiculing of Byrd's speeches about dogs.

She said: It's very strange how much attention the pet food contamination story has gotten in the press, as I said that in the last podcast, where I asked if I was just imagining that I saw a Senate hearing on the subject on C-Span.

****
I would have thought it would be embarrassing to dwell on tainted pet food for so long. There are so many problems in the world, so many human beings suffering. How can the media go on and on about a few dogs dying?

In contrast to Senator Byrd getting emotional while also being correct, a Senator Althouse would've told America to pay no attention to tens of thousands of pets getting sick and, in many cases, dying from food sold in our grocery stores.

Thanks to the media and Congress paying attention to the pet food scandal, we're finding out about all kinds of unsafe and/or poisonous foods and products coming into America.

Just last weekend a NY Times op-ed explained how seafood from China and Thailand is unsafe yet America inspects almost none of it (in contrast to Europe). I didn't know that. I didn't know the shrimp from Thailand at my grocery store has a high chance of being unfit for consumption. But apparently when unsafe seafood is rejected elsewhere, it can still get through America's ports.

The op-ed added: For many people, this year’s melamine scandal, in which as many as 39,000 dogs and cats were killed or sickened after consuming pet food bulked up with a toxic plasticizer, ultimately traced to wheat gluten imported from China, was a wake-up call about the country’s involvement in the global food supply.

Yup.

And now we need a media microscope on the barbaric epidemic of dog fighting. It became an epidemic in inner cities as a result of scumbuckets in pop culture glorifying it - for example, in Nike ads and videos from rap mogul Jay Z. Pro-dog-fighting rapper DMX's record label actually sells a brand of dog food designed to raise fighting dogs.

Bravo. I am truly amazed at both this post and the comments. Apparently, people who post them don't see dog fighting and killing of innocent dogs as big deal. Instead, they choose to make cheap fun out of 90-year-old Senator who loves his dog dearly. Amazing.

What's being forgotten is that this is a pending case and no one has been convicted. I remember Richard Nixon getting a lot of media criticism for opining that Charles Manson was guilty before his conviction. Such statements can wreak havoc and work to the advantage of criminal defendants.

Nixon should have kept his trap shut then, as Byrd should now.
