Leaving this site, the picture of Romney reminded me how he considers himself to be the enemy of due process and habea corpus. He wants more Gitmo, more, more "so people don't have acess to lawyers."
In other words, Mitt Romney dislikes the American system of Justice and the principles it's founded upon, including the ancient writ of habea corpus, won in medeival days.
And Ann Althouse is silent on the erosion of these pillars of freedom in American society. Don't look for her to utter a word of criticism against Republicans.
As far as your "illegal combatants," many of these people were handed over to US custody by militias in other countries. We don't really know if they are terrorists or goat herders. Already many innocent people have been released after months and years of imprisnoment and torture.
Does that make you proud? What kind of nation abducts and imprisons people lawlessly? A sad day for our nation, but Althouse can't be bothered to defend the rule of law.
In other words, Palladian, you resort to ad hominem because you can't adress the fact that the Republicans are falling all over each other to see who can vow to torture and gut the Constitution the most.
And that's what the Republican Party wants, to set up more Gitmo gulags, to whittle away habeas corpus and due process and to turn tail and run on American principles of justice that have made us a beacon of liberty.
The Republican Party is aptly represented by George W. Bush.
A.L. That whole story on AQ getting more funding from their Iraq operations...
How could such a thing be measured? Certainly not easily or with much certainty of accuracy. So why such belief in the story? Maybe it just appeals to your own pre-concieved notions. Well, that is great for you, but why would you think that would be convincing to others?
In addition, do you think fund raising by AQ in Iraq would be harder to do or easier if we left?

cardboard cutouts = (wood) pulp fiction
Re: "the erosion of these pillars of freedom"
I don't believe these pillars of freedom have ever been offeered to illegal combatants, anyhow, anywhere.
Too bad modern lefties weren't around when Lincoln and FDR were President. Their heads would have exploded.
Pogo:
Jose Padilla is an American citizen.

Alpha: Quit hijacking threads to push your issue. I'm going to delete from now on.
BTW, the photo is hilarious.
Cripes, you couldn't even stage such a thing nearly as well.
Leaving this site, the picture of Romney reminded me how he considers himself to be the enemy of due process and habea corpus.
Maybe he's simply wanting to emulate Abraham Lincoln or FDR.

You gotta admit Romney looks pretty lifelike.
Funny photo. :)
Yeah, Alpha, quit hijacking threads! We all know the real topic of this post is . . . wait, what is it again?
