What's with all the abortion posts? For some reason, I have that idea that in the past you'd mentioned you weren't particularly insterested in blogging about it. Am I mistaken?
In any case, I found the Wash Times article depressing for what it says about the process and who is considered "confirmable." The main value is having no track record?
Pastor Jeff: The Miers appointment raises the topic importantly, but also, I'm preparing for a talk to medical students on the subject of the Court and abortion. I'll do a post on that later today, probably.
Note that none of my posts are about the legal arguments for the right to abortion or my reasons for supporting it.
"There are no great justices anymore, because since [Judge Robert H.] Bork, they are not confirmable," he said, referring to President Reagan's Supreme Court nominee who was rejected by a Democratic Senate. "We have opted for average candidates who will not make or break any new ground. They are confirmable."
The filament quote which the Times bases their entire little article on.
Eh, I don't know.
Every generation produces a great justice.
The problem is, people expect homeruns all the time and let's face it, most justices are just long flyballs -- they have the distance, but not the power.
I'm confident that great justices can still be found, and are confirmable, but what makes them great, what has always made the great, is that they are RARE.
I also disagree with the Times' quote of John Roberts being "just a well-regarded litigator".
I think, like most people by now, we have come to appreciate that he is poised to be a GREAT JUSTICE indeed.
P.S.: I love Anagrammes too! But Roe v. Wade = Rove awed...eh.
A nun's oath could also be like a vow -- that's how I took it. When Ann first posted that as a headline on her blog, I thought it was the name of an actual beverage. It easily could be. I have a friend and a cousin who make boutique beers and ales at home (it is REALLY REALLY GOOD, very varied -- I'm not a beer nut but this stuff I would drink as often as I could get it). They'd love the name. You can just see the label.
I really don't understand your comments. I'm a Christian, yes, but what does that have to do with any of the things you mentioned? I've been critical of the Miers nomination, I don't think I've ever written anything about Rove one way or another, and I hate government corruption and the GOP's abandoning of fiscal conservatism.
If you're referring to DeLay, there's reason to believe the indictment is politically motivated. If not and he's guilty, then punish him - did you expect me to defend him for some reason?
What "news" are you bringing, who "asked," and what does any of this have to do with me particularly?
Now I remember - the Karl Rove anagram. Thanks for the clarification. Context is everything isn't it?
I think I understand what you mean now? There are Christians who conflate the GOP and GOD. I didn't think I had given that impression in my comments. That's why I was genuinely confused.
Or did your comment about "my former life" mean that church has changed in that we now believe in reincarnation? I don't preach that from the pulpit.
Now I'm confused again. Maybe I'll have to stick with "Jest Off Par." Or "Rap Jest Off" - enough with the joke that rap is music, already.

That's a pretty good one. I love anagrams!
Even though I was a supporter of President Ronald Wilson Reagan, I had to appreciate the creativity of "Insane Anglo Warlord."

Victoria,
All right, this one is killing me. Can you help?
Karl Christian Rove = Harriet Lacks Iron
But what do I do with the "v"?!?
What must we do for great justice?
Why, take off every Zigg.
All your base are belong to Bush.

Cancel the Lizards?
(This will make sense to you if you remember that series, V. If not, chalk it up my daffiness :)
Cheers,
Victoria
This is for everyone who's noted the appointee's unusual application of makeup.
HARRIET ELLAN MIERS = HER LINER IS LAME ART
Just remember you heard it here from me.
Yay! It's Anagramme Day on Althouse!

Annual Ethos-
Drops a quarter in the Salvation Army hat every Christmas?
Haunt Ale Son-
Keeps ragging Chris about his beer binging?
Pastor Jeff
Jest Off Par-

Victoria Elisabeth Barrett
Evil CIA Terrorist Babe
I win!
Cheers,
Victoria
Victoria: The official anagram for Ann Althouse is: Nun's Oath Ale, which I'd like to market.
Victoria,
Actually,
Pastor Jeff = Raj Fest Fop
In a former life, I was a dandified party-goer in colonial India.
Although I like the idea of whoopie cushions in church...
Ann,
I'd buy some!
Another anagram for Roe v. Wade: Reavowed (yes, not a real word).
Nun's Oath Ale, which I'd like to market
I love it!
Nun's Oath Ale. Very BoBo chic micro-brewery.
There's a dish in Greece I once had which is translated as, The Priest Fainted.
The upshot is that it tasted so good, the local pappas fainted when he took a dollop.
But Nun's Oath is better, because who amongst us has not wanted to hear a swear word come out of a nun's mouth?
Cheers,
Victoria

I can see it now.
Pastor Jeff in that natty tie he's wearing in his Profile Photo, and with one spats-shod foot on an elephant.
Very Edward VII, PJ. :)
Cheers,
Victoria
How did I miss out on this?
Hey, someone mentioned me! **sniff** I'm somebody! **sniff**
Ann Althouse is:
The Soul Nana !
vbspurs is:
irate vector hair babe !
Of course Sippican Cottage is:
A Pigs Pie Contact
The original anagram is not apt. One cannot imagine Rove being awed by anyone or anything. Rove is not the awer, he's the awee.
Amba: Well, yeah. I mean "Rove awed" in the sense of Rove awed us, not Rove is awed.
Hey, someone mentioned me! **sniff** I'm somebody! **sniff**
Just to me and your mother, Sippican. Aww.
Ann Althouse is:

vbspurs is:

Infamy! My hair is a cross between Princess Diana and that cute cut Keira Knightley had for 10 seconds last week.
Cheers,
Victoria
Victoria,
A nun's oath could also be like a vow -- that's how I took it.
It's ambiguous, Amba. That's what's so cool about it.

Ahh. Trust me to read a curse word into that.
When Ann first posted that as a headline on her blog, I thought it was the name of an actual beverage. It easily could be.
It's exactly like a micro-brewed beer name!
How much would a beer cost to brew? Surely the vats and all that are expensive?
I'd like in on this business, should Ann ever get serious about brewing Nun's Oath.
It could be, ooh ooh!, the first BLOGGER BEER. :)
Cheers,
Victoria
