Something is going on in Poland right now Everything I've read is confusing, to say the least, but it appears to be a coup attempt by leftists. You know, the people allied with Democrats in the US. I'm sure as our day plays out and theirs's begins we'll find out more. Apparently something to do with packing the Polish Supreme Court with leftist judges.

Report on events in Poland from HotAir. Does look like the TDS-addled husband of equally TDS-addled Anne Applebaum is trying to take over the Polish Constitutional Court.

Same people as who just pulled the coup in Brazil.

The globalists are getting increasingly desperate.

I have a new theory on Tucker Carlson.

He's got a brain tumor. And it's affecting his brain and it's totally changed his personality and his belief system. I would beg his family, and anybody who loves him, to get him to a doctor and check for a brain tumor.

Not making it up. I think it's a definite possibility.

On one of the cafe posts, people were talking about a judge named Ada Brown. And people on Reddit were going "brain tumor."

That's what I was going to say. Requiring a psych exam is one thing, but it could very well be a brain tumor. I think we all have a story. For me it was a minister who performed my wedding. He was really a great guy. A couple years later he began acting very bizarre, including calling church members in the middle of the night and making inappropriate sexual comments. The church sent him packing. A couple years later he died and the family discovered through an autopsy that he had a huge brain tumor affecting his behavior.

It's possible that he's just completely flipped out and become a raging anti-Semite, when he showed zero signs of that before. But it's also possible, brain tumor. And they will discover it when he was dead.

I might be wrong. Maybe he just became a raging anti-Semite, and he wasn't one before. We all have free will. But if you love him, if you are his actual friends or family, I would beg you to take him to a doctor and check for a brain tumor. You can still function, but it messes up your brain. And you start acting really weird, in ways you didn't before.

It doesn't hurt to check. Just go to a doctor and look and see. I don't know the man. Just speculation from an outsider. But he's a public person, and this anti-Semitism that I'm seeing now, I didn't see a decade ago. It's out of the blue. I think he's having a medical issue. I'm serious. Not a doctor, maybe an MD might comment on this.

My newfound favorite YouTube channel focuses on the Philosophers we all, whether we know them or not, have lived our lives to some extent, under the influence of their writings.

I don't know much about Benedict De Spinoza, but, I like what little I know. YouTube : Spinoza's Most Disturbing Theory About Free Will

Yeah, but I was just watching a YouTube of this week's Rush concert in DC, with Annika replacing Neal Peart on the drums, and what was one of the songs? Freewill. Then I check the blog, and you guys are talking about....CC, JSM

In the spirit of an open thread, I think fans of the film, “Casablanca”, will enjoy this discussion from the BBC’s “In Our Time” series. Particularly fascinating is the story of how European refugees helped create this Hollywood classic in the middle of World War II. Top notch.

Mosby, when Rush sings, "I will choose free will."

For decades, I didn't understand that lyric. What do you mean, you will choose free will? God gave us free will. I didn't have a choice. I'm a human being, made by God, and he granted us free will. It's part of being human that you are innately free.

Free will is why God allows Hitler to exist. Free will is why God allows Satan to exist. God is a big fan of free will, and we are not stripped of our free will in the afterlife. Free will is a deep part of my ideology and my theology.

Anyway, Rush might be making some Spinoza commentary. Or the other guy, who says we need to choose free will. I had no idea that's what Rush was doing! Now I know.

In particular, Lem, I like the early part with the baby, the angry child, and the drunk. I've been all three of those.

PW, thanks so much for those links. This is my #1 movie of all time. It's so amazing, you don't even recognize that it's propaganda to get America into World War 2.

Hollywood was a master of propaganda films. Casablanca, Across the Pacific, Ninotchka. You compare the shit the Commies and the Nazis were producing, it's embarrassing. Seriously. Do not underestimate how brilliant these artists were. Completely engaged in the issues of their day, but with humor, romance, danger, love, the hero's journey, all that stuff that makes a story cool and fun.

My review of Stagecoach (1939)

This is a movie about war. Specifically it is an American movie about how we have enemies, and they are out there, and we need to be ready to fight. When you think about Ford you realize he is rather a serious artist. He does not make Stagecoach to entertain us. Although the movie is quite entertaining. The final attack on the stagecoach will blow your mind, even now, 70 years later. But Ford has, I think, a specific purpose in mind, to instruct us in 1939 that war is here, get ready.

The interesting thing about Ford is that he always humanizes his warriors. He does not try to impress us with how tough they are. John Wayne is John Wayne because he's John Wayne, but he is most obnoxiously John Wayne in other people's movies. In a Ford movie John Wayne is usually a bit more subdued. For instance, in Stagecoach Wayne is playing a virgin. And he's a virgin who's got a little innocent romance going on with the town whore. So even in 1939, in a movie prepping us for war, Ford stops and recognizes innocence. Wayne's character, the Ringo Kid, is meant to be a kid, a big overgrown child who's never been with a woman and has no idea what he is in for. So this is the warrior Ford chooses for us.

The Indians, of course, are the bad guys in Stagecoach. They are not a character so much as an ominous presence. There is no attempt to humanize them or to show their side. Which shouldn't surprise us. If Ford were making a movie attempting to humanize Nazis in 1939, what would we think? Ford doesn't demonize the Indians. He just shows them as the fierce warriors they are, and notes they are going on the warpath. "They want war with us," is, I think, Ford's point.

I wonder if anybody else has had this happen to their Inbox:

I got hit with a spam blizzard this morning, a bunch of emails requesting that I verify my email address / use 'this verification code', all from different vendors or providers, some from out of country. Some saying they were from big names, but email addresses obviously not reflecting that. About 40 of these messages, all different, blitzing my Inbox over about 2 minutes, early morning. Then, this evening, a fraudulent charge on my credit card from a distant state, which was caught, but now the aggravation of arranging a new card.

Don't know if these were related, but it seems like a machine-driven activity.

As for propaganda to lure USA into WAR -
Do we know if FDR saw Ninotchka Not Rated 1939 ?
And if he watched it with Uncle Joe who was plucking feathers off live chicken?

HPL,

I'm using "propaganda" loosely to refer to movies Hollywood made. It's not government propaganda. We believe in free markets and free artists. The artists who escaped Communism and made Ninotchka were ripping a hole in Stalin's hide, in public, and it's glorious.

AI claims FDR did screen the film, in 1939. And he and others in the American government used it to to fight back against Communism when the war was over. AI's got a whole thing about it. I don't care enough to check and see if it's true.

Politicians are shitty artists and art critics. Their commitment is to their politics, not to art.

I saw a movie that was reportedly Churchill's favorite movie. It's #5291 in my movie book, which is not a high grade. That means that I think there are, at least, 5290 movies that are better than That Hamilton Woman (1941).

I saw this because it's supposedly Winston Churchill's favorite movie. You know why it's his favorite movie? Cause it's frickin' propaganda, that's why. He likes speeches about England. Woo-hoo, a speech about England. I'm dying for England. How many movies did Churchill watch, three?

That's the only anti-Churchill rant you're going to hear from me, by the way. I love the guy. But his art criticism sucks, big time. He was trying to, you know, win a war.

Serious English artists made A Matter of Life and Death, which is way, way, way, way, way better cinema. A+ all the way.

Serious question.

Would it be better for Republicans to shock, and keep the House and the Senate, and Trump pays out $5,000 to every adult citizen in the USA, as he pledged to do?

or

Would it be better for the Democrats to take the House.
