"Bernardine Dohrn and Bill Ayers always told their sons that, even though they had their children during their 11 years 'underground,' they stopped illegal political activity when they became parents."

"He learns in his research, however, that one of their early family camping trips was actually a stakeout of a federal prison — the Black Liberation Army had asked his parents to gather information to help them break Assata Shakur out of prison. His father then participates in Shakur’s escape; his mother uses her day job to steal customer identities for the underground to use as aliases. Bernardine did not bring him along as a 'beard' when scouting bombing runs, but he learns that she did do that with another Weather kid. Ayers Dohrn devotes special attention to his enigmatic mother... a 'distant, icy and determined' person who seems 'far removed from any traditionally feminine caregiving role, determined to sacrifice herself for the cause.'... [When] Bernardine is incarcerated for seven months for refusing to cooperate and testify against her fellow revolutionaries... [5-year-old] Ayers Dohrn is left 'sick with grief and loneliness,' so distraught that he begins wetting the bed.... He cannot understand what his mother is saying to him about the government or its treatment of rich people — he barely has a grasp on what 'rich people' are...."

From "What Happens When Militancy Conflicts With Motherhood/Two 'Weather kids' reckon with the unyielding political convictions that compromised their parents’ domestic duties" (NYT)(gift link/I'm using my last gift link of the month on this one because there's much more there and this except will prompt questions that may be answered).

And here's the book by Zayd Ayers Dohrn "Dangerous, Dirty, Violent, and Young: A Fugitive Family in the Revolutionary Underground" (commission earned).

Ethel Rosenberg died in defense of a lie. No, not the lie of Communism, but the lie that she had nothing to do with any spying. If she had fessed up to her involvement in the spy ring, she could have gotten off with a five ro ten year sentence. She preferred the propaganda of the deed, as they used to call it, and went to her death proclaiming her innocence. Her children continue to believe in her innocence and martyrdom. I wonder what the grandchildren think?

Gee, what a terrific story, they really cloaked that hagiography well. Sure, there are a couple of implied criticisms, but nothing damning. And just look at her contribution !

The sickness that drove this monstrous woman still prevails in a lot of people in this country, I think. The price of an open society, I guess. But they should have taken her seriously when she declared war, and acted promptly, decisively, and with defensive malice.

At the risk of harshing the vibe here... I'm reminded of an episode of Family Ties back in the day. Recall that the parents are '60s "liberals" - read that as "bleeding hearts" rather than as "activists," much less "terrorists," a read that I just now realized may have been intended to... nice-wash? I'll go with that: to nice-wash the formerly bomb-throwing radicals who were by the '80s living ordinary lives.

So ANYway. Bleeding heart liberal parents. Michael J. Fox playing their conservative son. And the two daughters, who were apolitical. One morning, the older daughter gets out an English muffin to toast. The dad scolds her, "Mallory, I thought we agreed we weren't going to use any British products until England gets out of northern Ireland!"

Mallory visibly takes a breath and says, "Dad, I just want to have breakfast."

IOW, there's a line between exposing your children to your interests and commitments, and making them a party to them. And the kids will tell you where that line is, at least sometimes, at least if they're allowed to. My brother-in-law is raising his little daughter to be a mini-him - we'll probably never know whether the skating, snowboarding, surfing, sports, and composting are in her nature or are a thick veneer on it, because - although she would be allowed to bring objections, she has her mother's retiring nature and doesn't tend to speak up. Not yet, anyway - she's only eight. And her dad is her primary caregiver. Can't wait until puberty hits to see how he thinks he ought to handle that. (Sorry, this is the family who stopped speaking to us upon Trump's election, and although my SIL has softened to the point of responding to innocuous texts from me, there's been no other movement there.)

I await Tina Trent's comments on this one.

Ethel Rosenberg died in defense of a lie.

I think it was in middle school but it may have been in my freshman year that a school textbook contained the story of the Rosenbergs - and "story" it was. This piece presented them entirely as innocent, framed, tragic figures, absolutely no attempt to present or even reveal the evidence against them, and lingered lovingly on the gruesome details of their execution.

No agenda there, no sir.

A reminder about the 191 Brinks robbery and the type of people these folks are:

"Officer Brown managed to fire two or three rounds at the robbers before he was hit repeatedly by rifle rounds and collapsed on the ground. One robber then walked up to his prone body and fired several more shots into him with a 9mm handgun, ensuring his death."

The Roseburg children eventually came to realize their father was guilty and lying when their "uncle" Morton Sobell fessed up about it in the 90's. They still feel that Ethel was out to death in order to pressure Julian, which may be at least partially true.

There's a documentary of The Weather Underground that's pretty good. Solid B in my book.

Nice doc about an American terrorist group from the 1960's. Film really gives a vibe of the 60's from a radical point of view. A couple of the mad bombers (William Ayers and Bernardine Dohrn) do a commentary track, which is kinda like having Charlie Manson do the commentary to Helter Skelter. And they seem so sane, that's the scary part.

It was a sign on the times that in the 80s, Michael J. Fox's Alex P. Keaton became the star of "Family Ties." I think the parents were supposed to play a bigger role in the series than they turned out to.

Robert Redford, who entirely sympathized with SDS in the Ayers/Dohrn days, made a 2012 movie about a family living underground: "The Company You Keep."

Ayers claims that he wrote Obama's autobiography.

I think he's lying.

What's astounding is that the University of Illinois law school gave this douche a faculty position.

Ayers Is No Education Reformer.

I have no doubt that we have professors now who are indoctrinating kids to go out and murder people in the street.

Remember, Charlie Manson didn't actually kill anybody himself. He just wanted to create a race war, and inspire people to do his killing for him. It's similar to Islamic terrorists inspiring not-so-smart people to become suicide bombers.

Saint Croix said...

No, I apologize to the law school. It was the education department.

Saint Croix said...

See also the education department at Duke. The notorious Group of 88 consisted of undergraduate professors who announced the lacrosse team was filled with rapists. The university students put up wanted posters and urged that these innocent men ought to be castrated. Similar to the Democrat nut running for the House in Texas. If she gets any votes, they will be from university graduates. You indoctrinate the crazy and hope they do violent revolution.

Saint Croix said...

Of course the awful thing is the Marxist take-over of the education department, so that little kids can be taught that Communism just means equality, and it's never been tried. You can't get a job in many public schools unless you have an education degree.

Jamie said...

Remember, Charlie Manson didn't actually kill anybody himself.

"Charles Manson" was the Name of the Beast when I was little, even though I didn't know what the Family had actually done until years later. Even when I came across Helter Skelter in a young uncle's book collection at the age of eleven or twelve, and pored over the pictures in the middle in horrified fascination, I didn't realize that Manson himself never raised a hand.

When I did find out, I was shocked that they had managed to convict him. I don't think they'd be able to, today; Dreamy Luigi himself might walk free, after all.

This is where I stop taking comfort from the fact that the level of radical violence from the American left (as usual, there is essentially and statistically no radical violence from the American right) is lower, by incident and body count, than in the '60s. The problem is that today, violence from the progressive left is some kind of hero's journey to the mainstream left - at least as represented by Democrat elected officials and the press. I don't think it was, back in the '60s, from what I've read; the ordinary liberals, including the mainstream press (maybe not the gonzos), stood foursquare against bombing and armed robbery and the like, and we're admiring of Gandhiesque civil disobedience.

Those here who have first-hand memories of those days - how do you feel about today? Am I wrong to be depressed at what appears to be the widespread embrace and celebration by the left of violence as a political tactic? Is it just the damn 24-hour news cycle getting to me?

Kirk Parker said...

Jamie,

No, you are not wrong. Where you may be being led astray by the 24-hour news cycle is how prevalent those sympathizers are.

Saint Croix said...

Family Ties was fun because their rebel son was a Reaganite.

Mike (MJB Wolf) said...

Now just try to imagine they wrote such an article about Tim McVey's family. It would never happen. The left just loves loves loves political violence against their enemies so much that even when they write an "uh oh" article like this it is quietly celebrating Dorhn and Ayers.

And surprise, again I'll say it, there is no equivalent universe of terrorists on the right who are celebrated. It doesn't happen. Ditto for professorships, being constantly profiled in print and TV, sitting as advisors to the President, ghost writing books for the President, and being generally treated as the elite 1% because of their notoriety not in spite of it.

We are not the same.

From Wikipedia...

On September 23, 2010, Ayers was unanimously denied emeritus status by the University of Illinois, after a speech by the university's board chair Christopher G. Kennedy (son of assassinated U.S. Senator Robert F. Kennedy), containing the quote, "I intend to vote against conferring the honorific title of our university to a man whose body of work includes a book dedicated in part to the man who murdered my father, Robert F. Kennedy." He added, "There is nothing more antithetical to the hopes for a university that is lively and yet civil ... than to permanently seal off debate with one's opponents by killing them". Kennedy referred to the 1974 book Prairie Fire: The Politics of Revolutionary Anti-Imperialism, written by Ayers and other Weather Underground members. The book was dedicated to a list of over 200 revolutionary figures, musicians and others, including Sirhan Sirhan, who was convicted of the 1968 assassination of Robert F. Kennedy and sentenced to life in prison.

The NYT doing its job-replacing facts with a narrative that justifies the leftists existence.
Those two were part of a violent attempt to over throw America. In those long ago days, we thought it was fine to kill commies.
When they realized Americans hated them, they went into the education system, where they were treated like heroes.
Now the NYT is doing what it has done for decades-selectively editing the past- leaving out the death and destruction they actively support, and replacing it with a softer, sellable narrative.
"The past was erased, the erasure was forgotten, the lie became the truth."

Mike (MJB Wolf) said...

Fear not. House idiot RJW will waddle in and lecture us how the right just refuses to recognize the violence inherent in minding our own business or something. When I was about 10 years old there was a 3-month period that saw 2500 bombings by left wing activists. I doubt RJ can find 2500 right wing domestic terrorism bombings in all of recorded history.

Or even 250 right wing bomb attacks. Or 25. Or 5.

Before 2000, how many Democrats would agree with this type of resistance against Republicans? Fringe at best. How many would today? Millions. It's embarrassing. The radical left hasn't changed, but it has gone mainstream. The only way to prevent a catastrophe is to destroy them politically. I'll never vote for another Democrat, unless the alternative is a worse Democrat. They must be shown decisively that Americans prefer law and human decency over feelings, victimhood, and envy. What is the alternative?

The book is full of lies. I will hopefully be doing a podcast detailing these soon. But a few things to note here: Dohrn didn't just steal identities for fellow terrorists: she used her job in a baby boutique to steal customers' identities so that women like the atrocious Judith Clark could rent the getaway cars for the several Brinks robberies and murders. That makes her an unindicted co-conspirator in the murder of police and security guards. The NYT, which has given Ayers and Dohrn ample space to rehabilitate their image, refuses to correct Ayers' claim that the bombs he made didn't injure or kill anyone: the Times itself reported several injured in one of their first bombings, for which they took credit. Most importantly, both Zayd here and Michelle Obama in her memoir, Becoming, carefully maintain the crucial lie that Ayers and Obama didn't know each other well. Michelle does this by excluding virtually every name when speaking about women who helped her in Chicago and never mentioning her legal mentor, Dohrn; Zayd dedicates one very vague paragraph to the scandal that arose in 2008 when Americans learned of an Obama--Ayers connection, and it's just a sleazy attack on those Republicans who mentioned it.

In reality, Dave Garrow, a Pulitzer Prize winning historian and no conservative, discovered that the Obamas dined with Ayers and Dohrn several times a week for 8 years, including during the time of 9/11. The couples were unusally intertwined. Dohrn and Mona Khalidi told Garrow that they counseled Michelle when she was considering divorcing Obama if he did not leave politics. Other guests at these dinners sometimes included journalists, professors, reporters and writers, including Scott Turow, the only person who accidently discussed a conversation he had with Michelle's mother at one dinner. The Ayers/Dohrn children babysat the Obama girls during the dinners. Concealing this was a huge conspiracy propped up by countless "fact-checkers," national journalists, the Obamas, Ayers and Dohrn, and imposed on their children and Michelle's mother. It could have swayed the election if the public knew, and the media still kept repeating the lie after Garrow blew it to pieces.

Tina Trent said...

Ayers also was surely involved in the effort to bomb hundreds of servicemen and their wives and girlfriends at a dance at Fort Dix -- his girlfriend at the time was one of the three Weathermen killed while constructing the bombs, and Ayers at the very least visited her in the townhouse/bomb factory. He also ordered the bombing of a Detroit police station, one case that could not be tried because of illegal wiretaps. But at least lives were saved. Hero Larry Grathwohl, who infiltrated the Weathermen for the FBI when Weathermen were looking for discontented Vietnam Vets with munitions expertise, managed to alert authorities in time to get to the bomb. He also taught Weathermen bad bomb-building techniques to keep their bombs from detonating. When Larry pointed out to Ayers that bombing the police station's alley would also bomb a restaurant frequented by black customers, Ayers didn't care at all about potential black casualities.

I have always believed that it wasn't just illegal wiretapping that kept Ayers and Dohrn from rotting in prison, while their closest peers almost all got long sentences: I think Dohrn secretly cut a deal when she was jailed for several months in the wake of the Brinks murders. Obama advisor Jeff Jones and Jones' then-wife Eleanor Raskin also walked free despite being caught with an apartment full of explosives -- and a baby crawling around them. Raskin later became a law professor and a judge. It makes you wonder exactly how those four got away with it.

Tina Trent said...

And Assata Shakur, who Ayers helped free, tortured one of her own crew to death with boiling water and ordered the successful assassinations of several police, mostly targeting NYC's new black-white police partners designed to integrate and create comity among the races. She also had them murder a sweet young white cop in my (future) neighborhood in Atlanta. No cops let these animals go free: the rot was among the leftist DAs, wannabe Atticus Finch jurors, and especially judges.
