“The one that people know mostly is the Arc de Triomphe in Paris, France. And we’re gonna top it by, I think, a lot,” Trump said at a White House Christmas reception in December.
The Arc de Triomphe — already one of the world’s largest triumphal arches — measures 164 feet.
So it will be more than half again as tall as the Arc de Triomphe.

Heck, if it’s gonna be gold why not go with a giant pair of McDonalds Golden Arches?
In the words of Nancy Reagan, "Just Say No".
As long as its gold... should work.
Peak Trump?
Whats the winged figure supposed to be? If its female and, er, a bit matronly, Melania could be the model.
its for the 250th
There is already a memorial Arch. 630 feet tall. In a National park.
I don't see a need for it unless it going to honor January 6th, but a lot of things dwarf the Lincoln Memorial, so that's not really an argument. Do you want a tiny version like in Spinal Tap with midgets standing guard?
Stupid
Trump’s going his leave his mark on DC whether the libs like it or not. The question is long will take President Swalwell and First Lady Fang Bang to tear all this down.?
what's going on with that ballroom?
I like the ballroom idea and hope it succeeds.
Whatever. As long as my daughter gets to dance at the ballroom.
The proposed location is ideal and will enhance the area, and provides an architectural segue to the district. I don’t care at all for the size of the 250’ arch and hope, if built, the smaller of the three proposed sizes (125’) is selected.
And it’s pathetic that WaPo shows the arches as entirely gilded. None of shared plans show such a scheme. Two are entirely marble and the third has some gilded highlights. But, please, if there has to be some gold, let it be only the finial or statue on top.
I predict that the ballroom money dries up over the coming year as the tech bros no longer feel the need to bribe Trump. He is going to leave the next president with a big hole in the ground.
He’s trolling you, Lefties. When are you going to figure that out.
We knew he was a fan of the Golden Arches but this is too far. Wait until he hears how tall the Washington monument is.
Trump is many things, but he's rarely arch.
’Wait until he hears how tall the Washington monument is.’
555 feet, and there won’t be anything built in the district taller than that, so it’s all good…
Dude wants his memorial while he's around to enjoy it.
fresh troll, naw rather stinky
There was also a lot of harrumphing about the Eiffel Tower when it was built.
Tech bros are not bribing Trump - moron.
Le Arc de Trollumpf
The figure on top is Victory/Victoria. It is not going to be all gold. The design drawings are white with some gold trim etc.
It's a shame the technology's not available to construct a gigantic hovering Trump Head that smiles and winks at you every now and then.
You have to read the article to know this: it's going to be built on the Virginia side of the Potomac, on the way to Arlington Cemetery.
So in other words, it's a victory arch for our fallen heroes.
If a Dem president came up with this idea, the headlines would say that: "KERRY PROPOSES MASSIVE ARLINGTON ARCH FOR WAR DEAD."
(or "HARRIS GIVES DEAD SOLDIERS HUGE ERECTION." Sorry, couldn't resist)
To be fair, I don't think Trump has been emphasizing the war-memorial aspect. Even on Fox, there haven't been clips of him saying it's for the troops. I didn't know until I clicked on the article, and I'm a veteran and a neighbor of the Cemetery - used to be one of my running routes. CC, JSM
Seems he is selling himself short. How about 47 + 45 + 80 (age) + 15 (birthday) + 3 (erect penis) + 0 (empathy level) + 46 (birth year) + 9 (rotten apples/Melania movie) + 28 (women who accused Trump of sexual misconduct = 273 ft
My first thought was horror. But upon further review, it is the 250th anniversary. If you had asked Americans in most eras whether we should do something really big and really classical for the quarter-millennium celebration, most of them would have said "Absolutely."
Howard, good one!
What does the reaction look like when the deciders discover they are no longer deciding? Never forget that Hitler was a failed artist.
Trump wants us to remember that he was a "rilley big show".
Yes, I too am horrified, but who knows what they'll think in 250 years.
Awesome! And inside he should have a statue of himself seated on a throne, like Lincoln only bigger, and gold! Take that, “No Kings!” fuckwads!
the first I hear of it,

I heard the Potomac is all sewage now... river of poop.
DEI hires are great with the infrastructure.
Just one more thing to get the fevered Left’s gangrenous bowels in an uproar. God help ‘em…

I think it is available. It could be like The Sphere in Vegas.
The Head.
Mitterrand Veut Construire un Arc de 110 Mètres de Haut, Qui Éclipsera l'Arc de Triomphe.
Et il l'a fait, bon sang !
You could go to concerts or pro wrestling in Trump's head.
Do we really need a gawdy knockoff of a French tourist attraction? Trump hasn't won the war he's in yet.
’It could be like The Sphere in Vegas. The Head.’
Yes!! And each hour instead of a bell peel denoting the time it could be his recoded voice. Each hour before noon could play ‘Yuge!’ and each afternoon hour could be ‘Bigly!’…
Ah, squirrel offered, squirrel accepted. Who says conservatives and Progs can’t get along?
Republicans under Trump have done more to solidify Washington's dominance of our federal system of governance than any Democrat could ever hope to do. This will be a great monument to that.
!
If Trump manages to lead the defeat of America's current crop of enemies, he'll deserve a memorial on par with Lincoln's, but he hasn't done it yet.
But Trump hasn't proposed a monument to honor himself. The arch is to honor the greatness of the country and it's people which he clearly loves. I think maybe he believes something big is needed to remind people of the greatness of America since it has been so fashionable for so long to tear America down, forget the good and exaggerate the bad in our history.
If you wanted to put up a statue honoring the Boomers it could be a man digging the last grain of sand out his own navel with a pickax.
Only Washington will stand taller. A fitting memorial to our greatest warriors.
Ever been The Arch of Titus in Rome? Celebrating the looted wealth of the Temple in Jerusalem? Maybe Trump could decorate the arch with the symbols of his defeated enemies.

I love the idea of a marker of 250 years of the greatest nation on earth! If not a ginormous arch which reflects a triumphant spirit, what then would suffice? Any better ideas?
I don't know... At least it's somewhat classical? Fits in better visually with the examples WaPo used for scale. The last few monuments we got off the Mall - the WWII memorial and the Eisenhower - are these modern things that never felt like they fit.

What about the Washington Arch in NYC?
What is that, chopped liver?
How come no mention?
Not as big as this one but pretty impressive.

This a great idea! Love it.
The Nebraska State Capitol is 400 feet tall. 250 feet is perfect.
What part of this proposal " hurts your heart"?
Never you mind those gunboats in the Indian Ocean, look at this squirrel!
yup the GOLDEN CALF syndrome
Then the Lord said to Moses, “Go down, because your people, whom you brought up out of Egypt, have become corrupt. They have been quick to turn away from what I commanded them and have made themselves an idol cast in the shape of a calf. They have bowed down to it and sacrificed to it and have said, ‘These are your gods, Israel, who brought you up out of Egypt.’ To be expected by this fella of the golden toilet fellowship..
I don't see a need for it unless it going to honor January 6th
Yes. Static monuments are so last quadranscentennial. A performance piece irritating the failed wannabe leaders of the present, commemorating their defeat heals my heart.

what more proof do you need?
So is it a distraction from Epstein, or from the impending, by all accounts, attack on Iran? Or is Epstein release a distraction from the war or the war a distraction from Epstein, or is this a bid by Trump to see if he can distract from Epstein without going the traditional route of starting a war somewhere where it is noon when it is midnight here?
’Ever been The Arch of Titus in Rome?’

Make America Grand Again
The ballroom is to Make America Gay Again
We can apply "new stadium" reasoning here... models predit that the memorial will increase tourism by X%, which will increase tax revenue by $Y, therefore it really pays for itself.
The worse part is that the taxpayer funded stadium argument is directionally correct (albeit quantitively wrong)
How about we just demolish the Lincoln Memorial? Man got 700,000 Americans killed in order to erect the all-powerful Federal government we're cursed with today. That's not even counting the thousands of black ex-slaves who died from neglect due to sudden emancipation for Republican political gain. And while they're at it they can sandblast his ugly face off of Mount Rushmore.
What else, what else... Oh yeah, Trump just declared the continued existence of the government of Cuba a "national emergency" for the United States.
In an old comment, G. Poulin insisted,
"I am not a crank."
Obviously, the office of president is not as busy as I like to believe. Trump has too much free time on his hands.
Bush used to say he was the decider.
well the income tax went away after Lincoln's passing then Wilson, the neoconfederate brought it back,
as part of the Capital improvement, if you want to take it, the Hunger Games way,
Lem: "Trump has too much free time on his hands."
Is it any wonder he's the President? CC, JSM
The model visible in the Oval O last fall wasn't that big. My problem is the spot isn't easily pedestrian accessible, and there's constant car traffic between it and the Bridge.
NO...NO... A THOUSAND TIMES NO!!!!
If you're unhappy about what Trump is doing, you should really be blaming the Democrats. None of this would be happening if they hadn't cheated President Autopen into office, you know.
Why are so many "grand" government memorials so derivative, unoriginal and down-right mediocre?
But not a real gold arch, that's cruel.

You mean like Obama’s and Biden’s library?
How about a giant eagle with the Axis powers captured in one claw and billion dollar bills being offered by the other?
An arch is actually a very good choice of type of monument because it offers space for multiple sculpted panels that illustrate key moments or achievements of the 250 year history of the US.
A ton of sculptures were removed a few years ago. It’s time to replenish, proudly.
in the year of the bonfire 2020,
This makes me smile, and I find it very fitting for both the 250th anniversary and a sort of memorial to the greatest president of my lifetime. Btw, I highly recommend "Melania". Haters will hate it, but the S. Illinois sold out audience I viewed it with loved it and applauded afterward. Trump makes several funny appearances and Melania is mesmerizing.
Seems like a good idea!
Ugh. I hate when TrumpTaste spills out from inside his homes onto the streets of America.
Where do they plan to put it? It would be lovely and appropriate at the entrance to Arlington National Cemetery.
The art on top brings to mind the Victor Emmanuel II Monument in Rome (Il Vittoriano).
It's a huge white wedding cake with winged figures and horses on top. IMO, it's oversized and out of place in modern Rome, but certainly brings to mind how Rome would have looked in its glory days 2,000 years ago.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Victor_Emmanuel_II_Monument
The USA isn't 2,000 years old. This would continue D.C.'s endless efforts to stuff more and more and more monuments into limited space. Still, I'd be happy to see this arch replace half of the huge and boring and pointless FDR 'four parking lots' monument.
Somebody please try to talk him into building in Iceland and Venezuela?
Bad idea. I hope it fails.
"So it will be more than half again as tall as the Arc de Triomphe"
Lincoln, seated inside the Memorial, is 3 times his actual height. The nerve.

I'm not sure what Ann means about "cruel." Is it the design, or WaPo's mocking it? Anyway, it's not technically a building- it's a monument. Trump's a builder. He has a proven talent for improving skylines. His ballroom design is genius. As for the arch, the bigger the better for a couple reasons: it's modeled after the Arc de Triomphe and is thus a fitting symbol for the historically mostly benign projection of US power in the world. The second reason is that it will drive his haters insane until the end of time. And we all know it won't be that big. That's the way DJT works: if you want half the moon, ask for all of it, and "compromise" for half.
"Don't worry, Jim—if they ask that, I'll just confuse them" -- Eisenhower to Jim Hagerty (his press secretary).
The Washington Monument never fit with the aesthetic. A 100 ft Arch (taller than the Brandenburg Gate) would flow better than the Washington Monument
Initially, the Eiffel Tower (1889) was widely despised by Parisian artists, intellectuals, and citizens, who labeled it an "iron monster," "tragic street lamp," and a blight on the city's, aesthetic. Critics, including famous writers, viewed the 1,000-foot structure as a, "disgraceful," "useless," and "ugly" industrial eyesore that, overshadowed classical monuments.
Transgender surgeries on minors hurt my heart. The disastrous withdrawal from Afghanistan hurt my heart. Open borders hurt ny heart. This is just a building in a sea of buildings.
Monumental Arched Golden Gateway to America... MAGGA!
Newspapers like the WaPoo are why we can't have nice things. I can can recall walking down the Champs Elysees in Paris looking at the Arch of Triumph. I didn't think it was that big. And so what if the proposed Arch in Washington D.C. is half again as tall. We're a big country with room to spread out or build up. Now what hurts my heart on the Washington Mall is the Korean War monument. I've got friends names on the Viet Nam memorial. But I look at the figures in the Korean War monument--that's a small unit that has had the bejabbers kicked out of it--and it hurts to look.
To avoid arguments about where it should be, how about they put it on wheels. You know like those big things NASA uses to use to move big rockets. It could move from place to place, spreading joy.
It could even go on tour, not just entertain the elites in DC.
And, how about a big platform on top where Mr Trump can stand and wave to the people, maybe throw them treats.
Perfect!
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Victor_Emmanuel_II_Monument#/media/File:2014-03-29_Altare_della_Patria.jpg
Looks like in that Victor Emmanuel II monument, they forgot that they were supposed to skim off half the budget for corruption, and put all the money into the actual building of the thing!
Shows that even corruption has its good points as a check on government excess.
Trump really should learn how to ride a horse.
“ I think it is available. It could be like The Sphere in Vegas.”
Hate it. Probably will drive by it tomorrow, on the way to the hotel (only the 5th tallest in Vegas). But it’s Vegas, where gouache taste prevails. Huge Ferris wheel. Fake Italian, French, and NYC scenes. Fake Egyptian Pyramid, with a spot light on the top.
We all know that Trump will rename it The Arc de Trump. And it will be torn down, thankfully, by the next Democratic Party President. And 98 percent of all of his Executive Orders will also be revoked and rescinded by the next inevitable Democratic Party President. This is the crazy political world we now live in, where everything is decided by autocratic executive orders.
“ The Nebraska State Capitol is 400 feet tall. 250 feet is perfect.”
But you don’t have a real gold dome. For that, you need to drive due west for a bit.
Besides, the NE capital is topped by the one in La, that is 450’ tall. I thought that the TX capital (308’) would be taller, but was built so long ago that these later built state capitals could top it.
Let us not forget that the San Jacinto monument in Texas is pretty closely similar to the Washington monument, except taller.
I predict that the ballroom money dries up over the coming year as the tech bros no longer feel the need to bribe Trump. He is going to leave the next president with a big hole in the ground.
It's already paid for, moron. Otherwise they never would've broken ground.
And in any case, should there be cost overruns I suspect Trump could find some loose change in his couch cushions.
Lonejustice: there won’t be another Democrat President.
Nothing sinister. Just that the election reform efforts will end their urban fraud. And DOGE and other financial efforts are choking off their tax-to-NGO-to-politician money supply. And the internal tensions between DEI/LGBTQ/Pooves For Palestine and what’s left of the traditional party will tear it to pieces.
There certainly will be a non-GOP president at some point. Trump may even be the last GOP president, since many of those same stressors are at work on that party as well.
Maybe an American Labor Party president will replace the winged victory atop the arch with a worker and soldier raising the tools of their trade in triumph. CC, JSM
We all know that Trump will rename it The Arc de Trump. And it will be torn down, thankfully, by the next Democratic Party President.
Considering your percentage of accurate predictions, I think it's safe to say the exact opposite will happen.

You are pretty much the only one to notice. Esp disappointed in Dinky, a Viet veteran
Everyone likes their own monument, no one likes someone else’s. Humans are built for motivated reasoning.
The new troll is still chuck the psychopath.
And I suppose that it will be the Arch de Trump. As Epstein said, Trump is "fucking crazy."
The image shows it as gold so that libtards can tell which one it is.
Very photogenic. Meade and other videographers will make multiple slow-motion videos of the sun rising, flags waving, and an eagle landing majestically high above the street. Future generations will think it was always there as a symbol of America.
