Oh, no!

It's just cruel. Please. This hurts my heart:

“The one that people know mostly is the Arc de Triomphe in Paris, France. And we’re gonna top it by, I think, a lot,” Trump said at a White House Christmas reception in December.

The Arc de Triomphe — already one of the world’s largest triumphal arches — measures 164 feet.

So it will be more than half again as tall as the Arc de Triomphe.

The proposed location is ideal and will enhance the area, and provides an architectural segue to the district. I don’t care at all for the size of the 250’ arch and hope, if built, the smaller of the three proposed sizes (125’) is selected.

And it’s pathetic that WaPo shows the arches as entirely gilded. None of shared plans show such a scheme. Two are entirely marble and the third has some gilded highlights. But, please, if there has to be some gold, let it be only the finial or statue on top.

If Trump manages to lead the defeat of America's current crop of enemies, he'll deserve a memorial on par with Lincoln's, but he hasn't done it yet.
But Trump hasn't proposed a monument to honor himself. The arch is to honor the greatness of the country and it's people which he clearly loves. I think maybe he believes something big is needed to remind people of the greatness of America since it has been so fashionable for so long to tear America down, forget the good and exaggerate the bad in our history.
If you wanted to put up a statue honoring the Boomers it could be a man digging the last grain of sand out his own navel with a pickax.

The art on top brings to mind the Victor Emmanuel II Monument in Rome (Il Vittoriano).

It's a huge white wedding cake with winged figures and horses on top. IMO, it's oversized and out of place in modern Rome, but certainly brings to mind how Rome would have looked in its glory days 2,000 years ago.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Victor_Emmanuel_II_Monument

The USA isn't 2,000 years old. This would continue D.C.'s endless efforts to stuff more and more and more monuments into limited space. Still, I'd be happy to see this arch replace half of the huge and boring and pointless FDR 'four parking lots' monument.

I'm not sure what Ann means about "cruel." Is it the design, or WaPo's mocking it? Anyway, it's not technically a building- it's a monument. Trump's a builder. He has a proven talent for improving skylines. His ballroom design is genius. As for the arch, the bigger the better for a couple reasons: it's modeled after the Arc de Triomphe and is thus a fitting symbol for the historically mostly benign projection of US power in the world. The second reason is that it will drive his haters insane until the end of time. And we all know it won't be that big. That's the way DJT works: if you want half the moon, ask for all of it, and "compromise" for half.

Initially, the Eiffel Tower (1889) was widely despised by Parisian artists, intellectuals, and citizens, who labeled it an "iron monster," "tragic street lamp," and a blight on the city's, aesthetic. Critics, including famous writers, viewed the 1,000-foot structure as a, "disgraceful," "useless," and "ugly" industrial eyesore that, overshadowed classical monuments.

Newspapers like the WaPoo are why we can't have nice things. I can can recall walking down the Champs Elysees in Paris looking at the Arch of Triumph. I didn't think it was that big. And so what if the proposed Arch in Washington D.C. is half again as tall. We're a big country with room to spread out or build up. Now what hurts my heart on the Washington Mall is the Korean War monument. I've got friends names on the Viet Nam memorial. But I look at the figures in the Korean War monument--that's a small unit that has had the bejabbers kicked out of it--and it hurts to look.

There certainly will be a non-GOP president at some point. Trump may even be the last GOP president, since many of those same stressors are at work on that party as well.
