"Violence is necessary. Violence is a part of America’s culture. It is as American as cherry pie."

A quote from the subject of the NYT obituary "Jamil Abdullah Al-Amin, Black Power Activist Known as H. Rap Brown, Dies at 82."

He died in prison, convicted of murder. But once: "With his trademark black beret and sunglasses, dexterous mind and imposing 6-foot-5 inch frame — 7 feet, with his Afro — he was a persuasive and charismatic figure to many, adept at rallying Black audiences to his cause while alarming many white listeners."

Other quotes in the article: "Black folk built America, and if it don’t come around, we’re gonna burn America down," "You’ve got to arm yourself. If you’re going to loot, loot yourself a gun store," and, referencing 5 days of rioting, “I don’t think you could articulate the sentiments of Black people any better than they just did in Detroit."

The NYT prints the full "n-word." Is it fit to print? I won't write it. But it is the second word of the 3-word title of the man's 1969 autobiography. The other 2 words are "Die."

So his title was an innocent German phrase, like “Die Bart Die”?

How fitting that this criminal died in prison. Now only if George Floyd had died in prison; think of all the grief and death that would have been avoided.

Interesting that he changed his name.

*Mention* of a slur is vastly different than actually USING it to diminish and degrade others. I see no reason *not* to publish any slur in an appropriate context.

Good. Rot in hell. I guess NPR needs another Kill the Cops host and And Goddard needs another assault the children of dead cops commencement speaker.

Now spend three minutes on the people he killed and those he left behind. Would you like me to describe the horrific murder scenes to save you time? Shot in the head and the back, ambushed, hunting random innocent police.

Daniel Walker. Say his name. Say his wife's name. Maureen.

Academia is entirely to blame for his post-murder fame. Your people made him a cause and a hero. Your people gave him a platform. Anyone who has ever suscribed to NPR has blood on their hands. Any academician who watched their institution pimp him out should have said something. You did not.

Decent people can contribute to Maureen Faulkner's nonprorit to aid the victims of these academics and NPR-loving scum.

For the last hundred years, black political commentary and crime/actions have driven USA gun control efforts. This includes old-school "Saturday-night special" laws that stigmatized inexpensive handguns, carry restrictions that followed Black Panther protests and the like (e.g., armed visitors in California's state capitol building), and white billionaire Michael Bloomberg's "throw them against a wall and frisk 'em" comments.

Now, Glock has attempted to stave off gun control efforts because the Switch (an full-auto conversion device available/printable for a few dollars) is everywhere in black urban areas.

These gun control efforts were ALL led by (oligarchic and wealthy) Democrats. Bread and circuses for their black supporters. Carrots and sticks too. Pandering. Speaking out both sides of their mouths. Double dealing. ????

I hope Althouse doesn't start publishing the lyrics of rap songs or she'd be in a real quandary.

I read Eldridge Cleaver’s autobiography in high school. It was just the n word. He argued to his mom that people should not shy away from using the word because it would promote his book.

Using AI, I put together a Spotify playlist of high quality rap — intricate storytelling and vivid pictures of personal experiences or complex social issues — and refined it to exclude the "n-word."

If I've mistakenly included a song with the "n-word," let me know and I'll kick it off the list.

Regarding Hip Hop lyrical content. I once bought an Aesop Rock album because he was ranked as the artist with the largest vocabulary. Musically...ho hum to me...but he does use a lot of words.

I have to say, the days of H. Rap Brown seem more sane to me than what I see today. As nasty as those days were.

As a former Detroiter who lived in that area during the '67 riots, that city has never recovered from what was burned down. It wasn't just the buildings- it was the heart of the city. It is slowly now- just now- starting to show some shoots of green, some growth again. Here...58 years later.
And guess who suffered the most through all those years?

Be careful what you wish for.

Yes, it’s fit to print. All we have to do to remove its power to offend and hurt is stop treating it like a magic word. Print it, say it, shout it and people will stop caring about it.

Lenny Bruce explained all this over half a century ago and we’ve only gotten worse since.

I believe it was Dick Gregory who wrote "N______.An Autobiography".
Cleaver wrote "Soul On Ice".

I haven't heard the n-word used disparagingly. Everything's a mention not a use, or is in the rogue register. Failing to print the n-word is basically illiteracy.

It offends people who want to show virtue by being offended but who are too lazy to read.
