What was even funnier is that several commentators went from writing over and over that the GOP and Trump had shut the government to lambasting the Democrats in Congress for suddenly ending it by caving in. They don't appear to understand why that is funny.

Ref the crane shot: I visited a Roman reenactor camp many years ago. It featured an armorer who made edged weapons of all eras. He kind of had a Simpsons Comic Book Store Guy way about him. Inter alia, he showed us a Celtic spearhead shaped like a stylized crane head. He explained that the crane was a messenger of death in Celtic mythology, so weapons shaped like one were meant to frighten your enemies. CC, JSM

President Barack Obama gave a group of war heroes a surprise they will never forget.

The former president surprised a flight of Korean and Vietnam War veterans on an honor flight from Madison, Wisconsin, to Washington, D.C., ahead of Veterans Day, according to a video he posted on X.

“"Ahead of Veterans Day, I was honored to welcome a flight of veterans and their families as they arrived in DC. To all those who bravely served our country, thank you to you and your family for your extraordinary service. The sacrifices that all of you have made to protect our country will be honored, today and every day," Obama posted alongside the video on X.”

Happy Veteran’s Day all who served and to my daughter who served in the Navy for 22 years and now works at an organization that makes veteran’s lives better.

President Donald Trump declared on Tuesday that he was giving Veterans Day a new name while speaking at a ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery.

”As you know today is not only Veterans Day, but it’s my proclamation that we are now going to be saying and calling Victory Day for World War I,”Trump said.

The president said he was recently at an event and saw that European countries were celebrating Victory Day, but the U.S. was not.

“I saw France was celebrating another Victory Day for World War II, and other countries were celebrating,” Trump rambled. “They were all celebrating. We’re the one that won the wars.”

“I watched it. I watched UK. I watched Russia. They were celebrating Victory Day World War II, and I said ‘we got to have a Victory Day.’ Nobody even talked about it in our country,” Trump said.

“From now on we’re going to be celebrating Victory Day for World War I, for World War II and frankly for everything else,” he declared.”

What a way to honor veterans, change the name of the day that is honoring THEM.

America is a wild complex place that historically defies easy categorization and attempts to control it. Politics, economics, and civil society are three broad tents where one can watch aspects of different trends and patterns as they play out over time. The current drama in the political tent may influence the events in the other two tents but it does not control them and it is but one tent out of three.

US regulator promotes veteran to quell unrest in top ranks ~ FT
'Richard Pazdur expected to improve FDA staff morale and smooth relations with the pharmaceutical industry'

"The US Food and Drug Administration is naming an agency veteran to oversee its largest division granting drug approvals in a bid to quell turmoil in the top ranks that has churned under health secretary Robert F Kennedy."

RFK Jr. has zero experience running a large organization and zero scientific or drug research experience. He's a conspiracy theorist trading on his famous family name.

The fact that Trump and Republicans in the Senate felt him qualified to lead the Health and Human Services department including the FDA shows their complete incompetence and willingness to put politics above good governance.

RFK Jr. has gutted his department of competent people and set it back many years, to the detriment of all Americans.

I do like re-adopting the practice of honoring 11 November as the day the guns fell silent in 1918. I'm a veteran, and I don't mind giving up a bit of the holiday to honor the massive casualties of WWI. We had approximately 117,000 KIA in just one year (compare to 50K in our 20-year involvement in VN). I am a First Infantry Division veteran, and I frequently go to the Big Red One monument here in DC. The individual KIAs are all named, and for WWI they are organized by company (about 100 men - might have been closer to 150 back then). Each company has more KIAs than its authorized strength! That means that in less than a year of combat, companies had 100% turnover just from deaths, let alone wounded who were evacuated but survived. And we won! Boggles the mind.

Trump does miss the boat a bit on calling it Victory Day, though. The Europeans, Canadians, ANZACs, etc, don't call it that. Part of why commemorating that war, wearing the poppy, etc, has been a bipartisan thing for over a century is because they all figured out early on that it's not about commemorating the war - it's about commemorating the sacrifice. The UK lost about 800K when their population was about 40M; France lost 1.1M out of a similarly-sized population. The WW1 remembrances are more like Yom HaShoa in Israel - remembering something that happened to them, not something they accomplished. Nearly all colors of the political spectrum take part in the commemoration.

This past Sunday, I watched the ceremonies at the Cenotaph live on GB News. The King, the current PM and the leaders of all opposition parties, and all living former PMs were all out there laying wreaths. The new Archbishop of Canterbury giving a politically neutral benediction (even though I'm sure it physically hurt her). Contributions of pre-partition Irish and former Empire populations were also remembered. Real national unity for a few minutes once a year. We could use something like that.

(Not perfect unity, though - the two combat veterans in the Royal Family weren't invited. I remember when young Harry, in his real Household Cavalry uniform with spurs, his real serving rank, and his real medals from the GWOT, used to lay wreaths.)

WW2 Victory Day is celebrated in Europe, though. We used to celebrate VE and VJ days; Trump, as a Boomer, must be remembering that. CC, JSM

According to the Census, we have about 17M total vets in a general population of 340M, so about 5%. Multiply by 3 close family members per vet, and you have 15%. Compares to blacks and Hispanics in size.

But back to young vets: 7.5M of those vets are Gulf and GWOT. About 2% of the gen pop. Multiply by 3 immediate fam, and that's 6% - approaches the size of the gay bloc. Not something to sneeze at. CC, JSM

Another study showing something many of us already know- higher Vitamin D blood levels make you healthier. This study show it reduced your chance of a second heart attack if you have had a first.

https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2025/11/251110021043.htm
Stands to reason that if you had that higher level before you had that first heart attack, maybe you wouldn't have had one... but they don't make that jump.

Measurement is important, because without measuring Vitamin D blood levels, you're guessing. And still the medical establishment, as defined by NIH and other government agencies, does NOT recommend routine Vitamin D blood level testing. Despite estimates stating anywhere from 24-60% of the US population is deficient in Vitamin D. And deficiency is defined as <20 ng/ml. Healthy levels are above that...

If you live in a free state, head off to a lab and get tested- if you care about your health. If you live in a health dictatorship like NY where you're forbidden to learn about your health without paying a a gatekeeper, tell your doctor you want to be tested. Remember- you are responsible for your health, not the doctor, not your insurance, and certainly not the government.

"World War I was ended through a series of treaties, collectively known as the Paris Peace Treaties of 1919-1920.

The most famous of these was:
The Treaty of Versailles (June 28, 1919) - This treaty officially ended the war between Germany and the Allied Powers. It imposed harsh terms on Germany, including:

Accepting full responsibility for the war (the "war guilt" clause)

Paying massive reparations

Territorial losses

Severe military restrictions" ---AI Claude

Those "harsh terms" eventually led to Hitler's rise, as he invoked their "unfairness" to stoke up Germany's population, as they sank into economic misery and resentment, as reparations sucked 132 millions of Marks and economic resouces out of the country , leading to hyperinflation .

IOW the "Armistice" led to Treaties, with Germany as the defeated party, and the Allied Powers the victors.

In David Reynolds's book "The Legacy of the First World War" he notes some interesting stats about how the different countries dealt with pensions for the wounded: IIRC in about 1930 the Brits had millions of wounded but were paying only about 250k pensions; in the US, with about 250k wounded, there were half a million pensions being paid.

When someone like Peachy keeps demanding “links” or “proof” for things that have been widely reported — ICE raids, detentions, family separations — it’s rarely a good-faith request for information. It’s a rhetorical strategy meant to shift the burden and stall the discussion. She’s not verifying facts; she’s derailing the thread so I’ll waste time chasing sources she can nitpick later.

It’s a form of proof-trolling — pretending ignorance to act as the arbiter of “truth.”

Once I provide a link, it’ll be biased, outdated, “an isolated case,” or ignored altogether while she launches into a new rant.

Comments should go up immediately... unless you're commenting on a post older than 2 days. Then you have to wait for us to moderate you through. It's also possible to get shunted into spam by the machine. We try to keep an eye on that and release the miscaught good stuff. We do delete some comments, but not for viewpoint... for bad faith.
