This afternoon in Madison, Wisconsin, we've got the Wisconsin/Ohio State football game and the big "No Kings" rally.

Am I worried about the chaos? Here's a helpful chart:

In short, it's a big Saturday, but a normal Saturday. A protest at the Capitol and a big football game at Camp Randall. The crowds should flow in and back out as crowds have ebbed and flowed from the isthmus from the beginning of football.

Grok made that chart for me. Is it accurate? I wouldn't say Camp Randall is on the "south side" of Madison. I think we all call that location the near west side.

Only 1 to 5 thousand protesters? That sounds like a pre-disappointment (if such a thing makes sense).

I'd like to see the Venn diagram on the overlap of both crowds.
I'll ask Kamala.

The No Kings crowd will be bigger than 5k, but nowhere near 80k. TDS is strong in WI, but not as strong as Badger Love.

Derve said...

Badgers gonna get their asses kicked. This is not going to be a "normal" football game, professor...

Derve said...

The Masses will be entertained! bwah hahaha!

Derve said...

You guys gonna get out there and get us some pictures? Barricade inside? Stay in the backyard and play? Let's see some content not just GrokAI telling us how things are playing out? (PS: yes, Camp Randall is on Madison's WEST side. Funny that you question that, living there so long, b/c a grok ai machine suggest otherwise... Be more skeptical, proffy? Some say you Boomers can't handle AI because you're not practiced enough with dismissing bullshit -- in a timely manner -- in the real world. That would explain the country your generation is leaving us to clean up...)

You're thinking of Golden Earring's Radar Love, perhaps?
Not too much love for this year's Badgers team led by Luke Fickell. Of course, you won't see that in Nebraska, but... #ChangeIsGonnaCome to Madison too. Let's see if his job survives the season?

In Boston big protest has been latching their crap marches to other events that will have turnout. Wouldn’t surprise me the Madison ‘crowd’ will get lots of national air time…

Shouting Thomas said...

The attempts to dramatize the “No Kings” rally are funny. The Trump admin isn’t doing anything to stop the rallies, but for the purposes of promotion, the organizers have to attempt to convince people that the rallies are somehow being suppressed.

Beasts of England said...

You have a march and a rally in Madison? That’s very special. We only have the rally and it starts at 10:00.

No college football game in my town, but it’s the Third Saturday in October down in Tuscaloosa, where you nice cheese people visited earlier this season. :)

A handful of people standing on a highway overpass with a "No Kings" banner, waving little American flags, shouting at the cars below zipping past at 80 mph is precisely the sort of cockeyed optimism that made this country great.

One might expect this would lead to massive parking problems. Luckily, the No Kings attendees and many of the Wisconsin football fans are Climate Change believers. I’m sure they gave up their automobiles years ago.

What about the market at the Capitol? Is it still happening? Wish I had seen this news item (https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2025/10/09/travel/things-to-do-madison.html), would have planned the trip? May be need to move my consultancy, or what’s left of it, to Madison.

jim5301 said...

I would have thought the numbers would be reversed. The last two home games the badgers were out scored 64-10. And Ohio State best team in country.

I would bet even odds more than 10k at the March.

Political Junkie said...

I bet there is not a lot of overlap between the sports crowds and the protest crowds.

The MAGA talking points is that the rallies will be chock full of Antifa and there will be lots of violence. And if that isn’t he case how will MAGA spin it?

Linda said...

I am planning a bike ride this afternoon and will be extra cautious using the overpass on East Washington Ave. During the first protest/march/rally the overpass was quite congested with protesters and banners. I was not expecting a crowd on what is normally an empty bridge and about 3 miles from the Capitol. I had to weave my way through them nearly got clobbered by a sign.

bagoh20 said...

MAGA doesn't need to spin anything. At this point, we're just here for the laughs.

bagoh20 said...

How many are expected for the "Yes Kings" counter protest?

Curious George said...

Half the fans will be Buckeye fans. Wisconsin football has really driven off a cliff. As Charles Barkley would say "Turrible"

I also like how it is always referred to as a peaceful protest, even though it hasn’t happened yet. As though it were part of the name—the No Kings Peaceful Protest. They have to keep reminding themselves to be peaceful because it’s so unnatural to them.

Keep telling yourself that. There are no MAGA talking points because they don’t care. Most of them won’t even know it happened.

Why "spin" it? It's going to be some large number of people scared of their own shadows, protesting something that isn't happening. Who needs "spin" when you've got reality?

The Badgers got shut out by Iowa.
This is going to be a loooong season. Maybe OSU will bench their starters so the Badgers can keep it competitive?

In our south Atlanta metro area, the local Democrat groups (stop pretending they’re non-partisan) schedule their protests sequentially so they have time for the chartered buses to get the protesters from protest location to the next.

MountainMan said...

It shows how out of touch the "No Kings" - really should be "No Brains" - organizers were to schedule it on one of the biggest college football Saturdays of the year. ESPN listed 32 games today critical to conference standings and the CFP. Normal people will be focused all day on the games. The protests, if seen by anyone, will only demonstrate even more how unhinged the Democrat Party is and more voters will be driven away from them.

Derve said...

You hosting the tailgate/protest party at meadhouse? *wink*

MadTownGuy said...

In Chambersburg, PA, near us, US Route 30 is detoured both directions for the party. It's a major east-west thoroughfare with a lot of semitruck traffic, mostly toll-dodgers avoiding the Turnpike, but a fair amount of local traffic too. Likewise, Route 30 in Gettysburg is blocked at about the same time.

Key Takeaways

A la king typically refers to a dish that is prepared with a creamy sauce containing diced vegetables, mushrooms, and sometimes meat, such as chicken or seafood. The dish is often served over rice, pasta, or toast points. The term is believed to have originated in France and has since become a popular way to prepare and serve a variety of dishes with a rich, savory sauce.

My older sister is participating in the rally in SoCal. She also forwarded a meme on social media claiming that ICE arrests constitute kidnapping, and therefore a felony. By that logic, any arrest by the Feds for breaking Federal law is kidnapping. Not well-thought through.

Nevertheless, I pray for her safety and that of those who are being completely (not mostly) peaceful. I reserve imprecatory prayers for the organizers and enablers, and the bad actors.

Irony alert: The funding for the "No Kings" protests are provided by a small group of billionaires.

Not Wisconsin's best showing.
A football program in need of a team and a coach.
A 'protest' offering no solution to a problem that does not exist.

Aggie said...

I dunno, isn't this at least the third 'No Kings' nationwide rally/protest? The first one drew some medium-sized crowds, the kind that make it almost impossible to get an impressive crowd picture. The second one, as far as I could tell at the time, died without much of a whimper. It looks like, in the modern era (no USAID teat), the budget for advertising has remained almost the same while the budget for rent-a-protesters has dried up, leaving only the delusional passionates. I'm not expecting much out of today. I guess the good news might be that ICE might have a more productive day, if all of the usual nitwits are off protesting kings, somewhere.
