I witnessed my revered father saying the c-word this year. I must say it shook me, even though all he was doing was reading first initials of... I think it was book titles, off the TV screen during a British mystery show. (You know those British folk don't put as much weight on that word as we do. But even so, on the show, in which the author of these books was spelling out the word through his titles as an insult to someone who apparently killed him because of it, the screenplay stopped short of having the detective speak the word aloud. Tina Trent said...: Images and voices are important. Make sure your state is one tape or two tape (the latter requires open permission to record). Be nice and friendly and act like them for the first hour. Get them talking without knowing they're being recorded if it's a one-tape state. Then go back around the crowd holding your phone openly and ask again if you can record them. If you're one-tape, it doesn't matter what they say. But don't be hostile or even impolite (why bother, and if they are not grossly defaming us or advocating violence, you can have some great civil encounters). Aways ask a cop if they have a permit first. Permits may very fairly limit your access to the counter-protest area or outside the limits of the protest, so long as they follow the law too.

I look at it this way: if they believe in what they're doing, why not get their best argument? And if it's a good argument, well, we've all learned something, right? And I will always acknowledge that. If it's a bad, defamatory argument, or for violence and hate and deception, it will be disappeared by the media, so it's up to you to record it.

Always get pictures of the small logos on the signage and see how much of it is professionally produced, though I have noticed that they are removing such info and crafting more home-made signs. The messaging is still pretty identical, which is a tell. Pick up all literature. Record the date and place and time. Some of this information is crucial.; 10/16/25, 3:16 PM
