"If your li'l girl comes home and said she was forced to undress in a locker room with a biological boy, what would you say? She's crying!"

Why wasn't the Democrat, Abigail Spanberger, sharp enough to come up with something to say?

I asked Grok to write an answer for Spanberger and got: "I would hug my daughter tight, wipe away her tears, and tell her I love her no matter what. Then I'd explain that everyone deserves to feel safe and respected at school, including transgender kids who are just trying to be themselves. We'd work with the school to make sure there are options like private changing stalls for anyone who needs them, because protecting all our children means building a community where no one is left out or made to feel ashamed."

I was surprised by "I would... tell her I love her no matter what." I think that implies that the mother's first thought is, Oh, no, my daughter is transphobic!

ADDED: Here's the whole debate, and I'm pinpointing the beginning of the locker room talk:

That's so annoying. Spanberger keeps repeating her only talking point: Let local schools decide. And Earle-Sears keeps interrupting. The moderator pointedly presses Spanberger to answer the question whether she will rescind Governor Youngkin's order requiring schoolchildren to use the bathroom that fits their biological sex, and she incoherently offers her local-control talking point. Meanwhile, Earle-Sears maximized the opportunity to talk about nude men:
My opponent will not answer the question because she voted for men being nude in girls’ locker rooms, in bathrooms, and in girls’ sports....

I'm distracted thinking about nude men in girls' sports.

Are you going to change in a gym where men are nude in the locker room? Are you going to do that, Abigail?...

You can see in this longer clip that the reason Spanberger kept quiet when Earle-Sears pressured her with "Are you not going to answer" was that Spanberger was avoiding taking any of the questions Earle-Sears was peppering her with throughout the debate. It looks bad in an isolated clip, but Earle-Sears looks bad in the uncut debate, interrupting continually. We'll see how that plays out in social media today. I'm afraid Spanberger will be framed as a dummy and a coward.

I think your implication is because the topic involves transgender. AI really doesn’t understand the concept of gender in any way. It is simply mashing words and concepts together. Grammatically correct but otherwise a mashup.

I don't know if Spanberger gave an answer after the clip, but if it was anything like her tap dancing when the moderator asked her the question, it consisted of a lot of words, but didn't contain much substance.

In a fair world, that clip would have been the end of Spanberger's campaign.

That's kind of what I thought. People respected the Sister Souljah moment because it appeared to take a risk to tell someone or a group of someone's on their own side that they were wrong on an issue. But the Sister Souljah moment only involved saying what someone else had said was wrong and they shouldn't say things like that. Addressing this likely requires taking a policy position on a divisive issue. Even though the Sister Souljah moment only involved saying, "your words were naughty," it was still planned ahead of time. In order to on-the-spot address this issue, which seems to require a policy position that would either alienate a vocal part of her base or be widely unpopular with many other voters, is a very tough needle to thread. Even though her silence looks bad, maybe it was the least bad option, which is sometimes the best outcome one can hope for.

You'd think that every Democrat would be familiar with the Kitty Dukakis question and have an answer prepared for it before it is asked.

We'd work with the school to make sure there are options like private changing stalls for anyone who needs them.

This doesn't work at all because, as we've seen from a whole host of situations, the whole point of the exercise is the little (or adult) weirdo wants to be in the same space where women and girls are undressing. Trying to put the trannies in their own separate spaces violates the whole 'transwomen are women' claim.

Her Congressional district is just south of mine, and I’ve been watching her for years — and contributing to her opponents every two years. The answer to your question, Althouse, is that she isn’t all that bright but covers it up by being a hard core lefty extremist.

"I would... tell her I love her no matter what."

Yeah, I caught that too. Grok doesn’t “get” normal humans, does it?

Sears should not have kept talking. The silence would have been a better campaign clip. But that actually makes me like her more. She cares about the issue and is passionate and not just looking for a sound byte.

The Vault Dweller said...

"How could anyone's daughter be forced to undress beside a male"

In a middle school in Deerfield, Illinois some parents complained that their daughters were forced to share a changing room with a male student. Incident The school denies the allegation. I don't think force requires a gun pointed at someone or a threat of violence. Force can also include a threat or reasonably perceived threat of getting in trouble, especially when dealing with the young, like the 12 year old girls in this story.

The Vault Dweller said...

"The only response that I would consider would be: "Ask me a pertinent question and I will give you a pertinent answer. Irrelevant questions deserve no answer.""

You may be fine with that answer, but I think to anyone who is worried about males being in private spaces for females that reads like a dodge. Also, to folks who are on the opposite side and wish for trans folks to be able to go wherever they feel most comfortable it may sound waffling and like the person isn't courageous enough to stick up for this particular issue. It may be wind up disappointing the most number of people.

She's no leader - she's hoping political advice and coaching is going to trick the voters into putting her in office. She'll be a poor choice, because she'll be taking instructions the whole time. A non-political candidate like Winsome-Sears is a better choice, at least she doesn't run scared from a simple debate conversation. She has guiding principles and she stands her ground.

And if I say I'm surprised by something, it's incorrect to say "Althouse doesn't notice..." Obviously, I noticed and was surprised.

I was surprised at how GROK answered my prompt, because it contained an unresponsive side issue. Why wasn't the Democrat, Abigail Spanberger, sharp enough to come up with something to say?

Because she's an idiot who is horribly offended at a debate moderator who doesn't let her get away with saying nothing.

Her response to the "will you withdraw your endorsement of Jay Jones for his violent texts" is classic, and may well cost her the election. Her tone of voice when she answers is "total snot". She can't believe that this black woman moderator is actually trying to force her to answer the question, and that comes across, hard.

The same is true here: she's got her lies, and she's not not very smart, has no real experience with having to think on her feet, and so fails, utterly.

Besides, the answer you wanted her to give would force her to take responsibility and admit that she will change teh rules so that naked males are in female locker rooms checking out the naked females.

Spanberger got elected to congress on the anti-Trump wave, and is still riding it, as it is peaking again in true blue Northern VA. Someone above mentioned that all she had to do was not speak, and she'd be OK. That's largely true. She's CIA, and I do not trust spooks.

Last year, our legislature, now run by democrats, sent several bad gun control measures to the current republican governor, who vetoed them. When (not if) Spanberger gets seated, she will sign them. There is already a bit of successionist talk out here in the woods, and this will inflame it.

One aspect that I found interesting here, is, of the six candidates running for state wide office this term (governor, Lt. Governor, and AG), there is not one straight white man running. The republican candidate for LG is a homosexual.
