"The department did not specify where the hikers obtained the mushrooms, which contain psilocybin, a hallucinogenic compound that can cause people to see, hear or feel things that do not exist."

From "Hikers on Psychedelic Mushrooms Are Rescued From New York Wilderness/The hikers, who were in the Catskill Mountains, told officials that they had consumed the hallucinogen and one was experiencing a 'debilitating high.' It was the second such episode in recent months" (NYT).
The men were lost on the Giant Ledge Trail, a popular hiking destination in the Catskills, about 80 miles southwest of Albany. The trail ranges from 1,100 to 2,600 feet in elevation with “several sheer cliffs and drops”... Still, the three-mile loop is well-marked and wildly popular, making it difficult to get lost.... The hikers left the trail after deciding they wanted to walk in a straight line toward their car, through an area with boulders and steep terrain....

I'm imagining them embracing the revelation that you could just walk straight to the car, while all these other people deludedly believe they are required to adhere to the official path. Proceed directly to the car and drive away into your enlightened new life.

People who are going to do mushrooms need to designate someone to stay sober and act as a reassuring guide to talk them off the ledge-- in this case, literally. This is especially the case if you are intending to do a "heroic" or "theological" dose like their worst-affected companion.

They probably brought illegally cultivated psilocybe mushrooms with them. I don't think New York is well known for hallucinogenic mushrooms growing wild. They are mostly found along the Gulf Coast and in the Pacific Northwest.

So you snooty tall west coast mountain hikers- we’ve had to squeegee up more than a few of you from the Appalachians and the Whites because you underestimated their gqarlyness (swear to god that’s what it corrected to…) So yeah we don’t get the suffocating effects of the thirteeners but you will be beat to death by the up/down up/down of even a modest thru. If that don’t get you the fake out in the Whites with the mall parking lot at the bottom and the rv parking at the top will eff.you.up…

I'd watch Mushroom Hiker vs Cocaine Bear if it showed up on Netflix.

This place with the shroom dudes is just a bit south of the Ichabod Crane school district, I think, where all us kids bitd all wanted to go to school. When it snowed and we had our rosaries and radios listening for school to be cancelled, Ichabod Crane were always the lucky ones- even a modest dusting of snow and they shut down, sometimes the only ones to cancel that day. They all lived on the side of a mountain and would slide off when it snowed or something…

Rescue by forest-rangers of hikers who are debilitated by psilocybin-containing mushrooms has been a frequently-recurring local news story here.
To me the most notable part of this iteration is that the rangers went so far as to send someone to back-trace the hikers' path on the next day in order to find the misplaced bag of car-keys.

Don't blame the mushrooms these people are morons Whom do not understand navigation. It's a good point though the East Coast including the Adirondacks the Berkshires and the whites are more hairy than one would think even though they're not that tall. In addition navigation is more difficult because of the abundant vegetation.

Forest Ranger Russell Martin's comments make this article well worth reading.

Shroom trippers rescued by forest rangers. Public libraries in Chicago, LA, Philly, etc. stocked with Narcan for opioid overdosers. So often depending on the kindness of strangers.

Walking in a "Straight line" through boulders and forest is a lot harder then it seems. Its amazing how easy it is to get lost once you get off the marked trails.

AI Overview

Straight line hiking, also known as a straight line mission, is an outdoor challenge where a person attempts to traverse a region or landscape in a perfectly straight line, on foot, ignoring existing trails and natural obstacles like mountains, rivers, and cliffs. The goal is to follow a predetermined path with a GPS or compass bearing, forcing encounters with remote and challenging terrain while strictly adhering to the linear route.

Been there - done that, except it was the Mt. San Gorgonio Wilderness in L.A., and we found our way out just fine after a couple days. Good times.
