"... unfairly, I believe — to a symbol of what the ’60s rose up against.... Scandal followed Mr. Nixon throughout his career, as it has Mr. Trump. Both scrambled back to the forefront of politics — Mr. Nixon until he was felled by Watergate. ('He left. I don’t leave. A big difference,' is Mr. Trump’s
take.) Both positioned themselves as victims of liberal elites and champions of a silent majority; both maintained an enemies list of people and institutions they wanted to punish.... But... Mr. Nixon entered the fray only at the tail end of the ’60s.... His predecessors, John F. Kennedy and Lyndon B. Johnson, were far more responsible for the upheavals of that time.... Mr. Trump, by contrast, defines what is happening today. The troubles of the country and world, whether the Gaza protests, the war in Ukraine or unchecked immigration, may predate his second term, but the way he has incorporated them into his broad assault on American institutions and values stamps this era with his brand. Mr. Nixon never came close to anything of the sort...."
John F. Kennedy and Lyndon B. Johnson are held responsible but Obama and Biden are not. Why not?! The obvious difference between Nixon and Trump is that Trump is currently in power and the opposition to him is happening now. There's no political cost to holding Kennedy and Johnson accountable now. But when Nixon was in power, he was hated and demonized, quite effectively. The big difference between Trump and Nixon is the one Trump is quoted as saying: "He left. I don’t leave. A big difference."

good point!

Now, they have

The difference between Nixon and Trump is X.
The press lied about what Nixon did and Nixon was taken down by an FBI led Coup.
They tried to take Trump down with an FBI led coup also but he beat it.
Everyone involved with the Russian Collusion Hoax should be executed. Everyone on the Mueller Team should be executed. They are traitors. Everyone involved with Watergate should be executed if they are still alive.
Everyone who still pushes the Russian Collusion hoax in our country is too dishonest or to stupid to live in a free country and should be shipped to China.
And by "American institutions and values" the NYTimes means, open borders, unrestricted free trade and eternal nation-building wars.
There's another parallel. When Nixon and Trump were first elected they "reached accross the aisle" to the MSM and the Democrats and tried to "Work together to solve problems". And in both cases, the Democrats/MSM refused the olive branch and started lawfare to destroy them.
Nixon also tried to put together a cabinet and a team of advisors that represented everyone. You had liberal Republicans like Romney, Safire, Len Garment and Ray Price. You rightwingers like Pat Buchanan and Agnew. You had Democrats like Moynihan. IRC, Nixon not only started the EPA and Affrimative action, he imposed wage and price controls and wanted to give people a UBI.
But no matter what he did, the Democrats/MSM hated his fucking guts and finally destroyed Nixon.
"He left. I don’t leave. A big difference."
President Trump is right. Nixon should never have resigned. He should have forced Congress to impeach him. He pussied out like a fraidy cat.
One of the things I love about President Trump is that he is no fraidy cat. I feel like he will never pussy out.

“ incorporated them into his broad assault on American institutions and values stamps….”
When was illegal immigration an American value?
I thought peace was an American value. Pax Americana.
...oh my God, they framed Nixon
-William Murray
"...his broad assault on American institutions and values..."
Oh, that right there is a lie so broad and obvious, it makes anything else he says null and void. Just STFU, liar.
Let's do the Abby Hoffman test. Abby Hoffman was against the skullduggery of the FBI, the CIA, Washington DC, and the Pentagon military industrial complex. Trump is too. This should prompt your 'Trump is Abby Hoffman' tag.
The Left and the Fake News hate Trump way more than Nixon. That’s because, in part, Trump is much more effective.
Wow! How about this parallel? Nixon (5 letters) Trump (5 letters) Biden (5 letters) Obama (5 letters)
but the way he has incorporated them into his broad assault on American institutions and values
Waht weasel words. We voted for him because we want the institutions that are destroying American values to cease...

California is going to lose a lot of congressional seats if they don't get to count their illegals in the census. Another point where Roberts betrayed the country as chief justice.
California's medicare and medicaid and food stamp industries also rake in billions of federal dollars most of which goes to rich white women in bureaucratic positions.
The Assault on America and Americans came from Fauci, the Chi Coms, the evil billionaire Soros family, Soros Family open border plan, Crook Joe and his pathetic vile mob-BS family, the Liar(D) media including frauds like Jake Tapper... and the whole (hole) that is fraud MSNBC.
Really - that's all the collective corrupt Soviet left and their BS media boil down to - Lying liars who lie.
The only ones apparently not "responsible for the upheavals of" then and now are the people doing the upheavalings.
That's a constant position of progressive writers on left-wing extremism and violence.
The troubles of the country and world, whether the Gaza protests, the war in Ukraine or unchecked immigration, may predate his second term, but the way he has incorporated them into his broad assault on American institutions and values stamps this era with his brand.
These problems all go away when the Democrat party is suppressed and it is no longer a political tribe in our country.
All of the actual liberals like RFK and Gabbard are republicans now. The only democrats left are the progressives/socialists/fascists.
We will be better off without them.
I think the big problem with Nixon dates back to the late 40's when he went after Alger Hiss. Alger Hiss, the Soviet spy ("Ales" as we now know him from the Venona transcripts)
Nixon was right, Ales was a Soviet spy. They could not save Hiss but they did save dozens (hundreds?) of others with their performative Nixon hatred.
Ditto McCarthy. Well respected until he got too close to the nomenclatura. Then he became a drunken idiot. Especially when he got too close to infiltration in Eisenhower's beloved Army.
In the fullness of time we have found that both of them were right. Virtually every single person they went after has since been found to have been a spy or compromised by the Soviets and Chinese.
I'll wait for someone to name one of their targets who was not.
(But I won't hold my breath)

I guess the Trump = Hitler crew has run out of things to say.
The current insurrection in California is what they had planned for the whole country. They imported a foreign army and called them "undocumented immigrants."
They don't have enough "undocumented immigrants" anywhere other than New York City to pull off their color revolution.
And the best part is that 80% of the country is hoping that the California insurrection is put down hard.
Please keep fighting you traitorous scum. We beg that Trump puts thousands of these scum bags in jail.
When the NYTimes writes one of these screeds against a democrat, then come and wake me up. Every republican is Hitler, fascist, sexist, homophobic, racist to the democrat mouthpiece the NYTimes.
A new line of attack. Out "Trump is Hitler" --In "Trump is Worse Than Nixon".
A bit off topic but related to the LA riots. H/T to Jeff Childers' Coffee and Covid blog
In the BBB there is a provision for a 5% (lowered to 3.5%) tax on remittances out of the US. This has Mexico's president Scheinbaum hopping mad. Mexico receives @$65bn annually in remittances (For comparison, about $55 bn for all its oil) or about 3% of GDP
A couple weeks ago, she said “Say no to a remittance tax,” she said. “Another team will travel next week to speak with U.S. senators and our community across the border to keep working to stop this.”
https://www.pressenza.com/2025/05/mexicos-president-ramps-up-opposition-to-proposed-u-s-remittance-tax/
Total remittances to South/Central America are about $155bn, remittances to India are @$165bn.
A remittance tax could keep a nice chunk of change in the US.
So how much of this supposed Trumpian "chaos" is being ginned up and supported by other countries?

As for the comparison of Nixon and Trump, we shouldn't underestimate the different media and political environment Nixon faced. Three channel TV, Progressive domination of the newspapers and magazines and a bi-partisan Establishment that had effectively marginalized traditional conservative Republican suspicion of foreign entanglements and support for small businesses.
It doesn't feel like the 60's at all, it feels like a do over of Trumps first term. The big difference is that the opposition is becoming ludicrous while Trump is prepared. Trump's team is one of the smartest I've seen, a remarkable contrast with his first term. And people are getting tired of the same old, same old from the Democrats. It is a new age, and they look old and tired. Obama's legacy has run out of gas and is stuck in a ditch.

The riots are always described in the passive voice, I have noted- the implication being that Trump is the one causing them, not the rioters themselves.
To be fair to Nixon, Trump has popular, political, and billions of dollars in capital support to weather the kleptocratic wails of climate hypocrisy.

Now the rioters are throwing exploding projectiles at the police horses. No, PETA won't get involved. But now they are really p!ssing off the horse lovers, of which there are many.
Mr. Trump attends Washington, George, that is, President of our fair Republic... rising.
I am impressed by the willful blindness of the author to any predicate for the behavior and policies of Trump. There apparently were no Obama or Biden administrations or Hillary campaigns, bringing about fundamental transformations of America and the federal authorities, there were no corruption scandals like Fast & Furious or Russian collusion hoax or the entire Biden White House. The Trump counterrevolution apparently exists in a vacuum, created ab initio from the inside of Trump's black heart and deranged mind. To hell with that, to hell with them all, Trump is the one who decided to fight back against them. Go Trump, go!
There are a number of asymmetries between then and now. Probably the most obvious difference is that, back then, people still trusted the news media. Walter Cronkite was downright revered. Dan Rather had yet to manifest his Bush Derangement Syndrome by pushing an obviously forged document and, when the forgery was exposed, calling it “fake but accurate.”
Also back in the 1960s the anti-integration riots in the South (led by Democrats and Democrat-adjacent people) were still a fresh memory, as was Eisenhower’s deployment of the US National Guard to quell the riots.
Plus, back then most people, even the anti-war* types, firmly believed that the US was so strong that we could impose our will on any (small) country in the world through military force if need be. In the 1960s a twenty-year war against a country hardly out of the Stone Age — that we -lost and were forced to leave behind working artillery, sma arms, ammo, and combat vehicles was still 60 years in the future.
And the neverending culture wars had just begun, so we didn’t know that they were going to escalate forever. Civil Rights was a noble cause, and so was cleaning up the air (not that Canada gives a damn about their air quality of ours). CO2 as a pollutant? How gullible are we supposed to be?
But the biggest difference was that the working people, the kind that come home at night with dirt under their fingernails, were solidly for the Democrats. The part of them that were evangelicals came over to Nixon but the Democrats throwing them out of the party wouldn’t happen until Obama and would not be entirely recognized until Biden.
_____________
* Take it from a person who was draft-bait in the 1960s. Very few anti-war protestors were anti-war. They were only anti their own asses being shot in a hot, humid jungle.

These problems all go away when the Democrat party is suppressed and it is no longer a political tribe in our country.
The other way the "problems all go away" is if they are fully in charge, ISTM - if that were the case, there be no opposition. It also STM that that's probably the goal.
Odd headline. The only people who can "feel like it's the 1960's" are people who were born in the Forties and Fifties.
Anyone born after 1960 has no genuine memory of the 60's
In other words, if you're not on Medicare, you CANNOT
remember the 1960's (speaking as a 70 year old).
What this know-it-all NYT writer means is, "it feels like
'what you have been told the 60's were like."
What people miss about the comparison of the present to the
1960's is one big thing -- in the 60's, the chief reason the educated,
well-off middle/upper-middle classes turned agains BOTH
dems (LBJ) and reps (Nixon) was...the draft. The odd thing (to me) about the present attitude of the children and grand-
children of the 60's parents is they...have...no...such
gut issue pushing them to hating Trump/MAGA as much as
they do. Imho, people don't form deeply held views because
"I took a course in racism 10 years ago." They hold them
because they dislike and want to separate themselves from
lower-/working-class country-music listening whites.
In other words, everything we have been seeing since 2016 is
a "largely" non-violent social (class) civil war between different groups of whites.
Interestingly, Hispanics (see the polls) are largely perceiving
things this way.
Yancey - Indeed.
It's the classic child argument: 'You made us angry -- so we get to riot, temper tantrum, and break things... . It's your fault.'
Nixon was a classic case of "it's not the crime, it's the cover-up." I don't think anybody believes he was involved in the break in and if he let the investigation run its course, he would have been fine. But instead he tried to cover it up and then cover up the cover up, and it all spun out of control.

trump is an authoritarian with no respect for the Constitution, the rule of law, or separation of powers. How are Biden and Obama responsible for that?
jim5301
Please give specific examples of all the unconstitutional things Trump has done.
Nixon was loyal to nation and people, and a burr on some powerful interests' saddles. A "burden" in modern terms.
Spot on, chuck.
I agree with Achilles. If a bunch of these traitors were executed (by firing squad or the gallows is my preference), maybe, just maybe it would deter others from being traitors to the USA.
If memory serves, despite the hatred and demonizing, Nixon won a landslide victory in 1972, much more of a mandate than Trump has. The difference between Trump and Nixon, Nixon kept his anger within the Oval Office, Trump spews his anger and retribution threats from the Oval Office. We see Trump's every day; we only found out Nixon's when the tapes were released.
"John F. Kennedy and Lyndon B. Johnson are held responsible but Obama and Biden are not. Why not?!" I propose that Democrats, after examining Kennedy's and Johnson's stands on issues, now consider them to be practically Republicans now.
Rusty - for starters, punishing law firms because they employ or represent people he disagrees with. Do you have any problem with that. Have you read any of the five or so court decisions all concluding it was wildly unconstitutional?
How about deporting people to prison in other countries w/o any due process? I imagine you're good with that as well.
How about taking a 400 million "gift" from a foreign government and keeping it, which he says he intends to do? Familiar with the emoluments clause?
How about an EO squarely at odds with the citizenship requirements of the Constitution. How about an EO taking away from the states the right to run their own elections. How about shuttering agencies established by Congress w/o authority of Congress? And on ....
For starters ...
"The difference between Trump and Nixon, Nixon kept his anger within the Oval Office, Trump spews his anger and retribution threats from the Oval Office. We see Trump's every day; we only found out Nixon's when the tapes were released."
Nixon was a loser. Always fighting half-heartedly against the Liberal establishment. It was really a case of unrequited love. Nixon wanted the WaPo and NYT's to write well of him.
He let Agnew be his attack dog, because he didn't have the stomach for it. Its this goofy love of enemies, that led to his resignation. Oh well, at least he was a beautiful loser. Unlike Trump.
It's so cute that people still talk about Nixon as if he committed a crime that should live in history. It will live in history, but not because of the magnitude of the crime. It's because the left- meaning academia and the media- won't let it die. They keep teaching that it's a massive, never-before seen level of crime. Hell...Woodward and Bernstein have made a career on it.
Not a one of them has anything to say about how they foisted a Sack O'Potatoes on us as President, ignored every loud and clear example of him being unable to function, then covered for the entire operation as unelected unknowns ran the country and changed the course of history- for the worse- for the US and the rest of the world.
Nixon's burglary cover-up is cute by comparison.
In my opinion, when Nixon opened up China by normalizing relations he helped saved millions of Chinese from deep poverty. It did not work out well for US power but it was a great humanitarian gesture. The deep state does not believe in humanitarianism so they had to get rid of him. What was Nixon’s crime next to Obama/Hillary’s code red on Trump? A parking ticket.
As a reference, I will quote Grok:
“ Trade Growth: In 1972, U.S.-China two-way trade was only $95.9 million. Nixon’s relaxation of trade restrictions (e.g., allowing American oil companies to fuel Chinese ships and permitting $100 in Chinese goods imports) laid the groundwork for economic ties. By the 1980s, trade expanded significantly, and China’s entry into the World Trade Organization (WTO) in 2001, facilitated by earlier U.S. support, further boosted trade.
• Impact on Poverty: Integration into global markets provided China access to foreign capital, technology, and markets, which fueled economic growth. From 1981 to 2016, China’s poverty rate fell from 90% to under 4% (World Bank $1.90/day line), lifting approximately 800 million people out of extreme poverty. This was largely due to export-led growth and foreign investment, which Nixon’s overtures helped initiate.”
Nixon was a big picture thinker and accomplished several dreams.
Favorite part of the Pentagon Papers: Ellsberg copies documents from 1967, when LBJ was in office and running the war, and releases them in 1971 when Nixon was running the war. I think 'institutional powers' only ran the Watergate op because the Ellsberg op failed.
the other element was he was threatened to leak the SIOP nuclear target list,
I was just a kid, but disliked Nixon along with every other young person I knew. Now I think he was yet another victim of a soft coup orchestrated by the Deep State scum and their news media handmaidens.
The CIA and the FBI are evil and should be entirely dismantled. All American servicemen should be withdrawn from every foreign nation, and the size of the army should be cut by 75 percent. Eisenhower was right about the military-industrial complex, but I would call it the military-industrial-espionage-media complex. They are a dangerous enemy and a menace to liberty.
it was said that Ellsberg had once been with Prouty and Conein, who protected him when he had squired, the mistress of a Corsican caid, mob boss, who threatened him so he was spirited out of the country,
the MIC was a necessary evil but it had been largely tamed by Eisenhower, he didn't take the hint over Budapest, that Dulles
the classic Deep Stater had put him in a bind over,
Conein who masterminded the Diem coup, said if he had been in charge, the Watergate breakin would have gone off without a hitch
The reason TDS is so widespread is that Trump is openly what other Presidents are only in private. I prefer to see what I'm buying, including the defects. If you compare 2 items on Amazon that do the same thing, and for one you only read the positive reviews and the other you only read the negative, you are not doing yourself any favors. Even better is getting to try the thing first as we did in 2017-2000. Then we bought something so bad the seller hid it from view. That was a bad purchase, but in the end it taught us a lot.
" ...the Watergate breakin would have gone off without a hitch"
A lot of us think it went exactly as designed.

Bill Harshaw @11:49 repeating libtard talking points about "angry Trump" who is always mad and raving angry "every day".
Okay, libtard, show me some clips of Donald Trump losing his temper. Surely it must be from today, this weekend, last week.
You will never post anything because Trump never loses his temper. That's what weaklings like Biden, Obama, Clinton, and Bush would do.
The President and Constitutional Violations: Will the Federal Courts Contain the President’s Power Grabs?
A throughline of President Donald Trump’s second term in office is that his administration believes it can act with impunity when it comes to the law and to the U.S. Constitution. In a recent interview, President Trump responded to a question as to whether he had to uphold the Constitution with, “I don’t know.”
Courts have prevented the Trump administration from, among many other things, ending constitutional birthright citizenship, targeting opponents with politically motivated investigations, freezing funding that Congress had approved for projects, and cutting off funding due to political disagreements.
Until Congress stands up to the Trump administration’s efforts to strip its own powers, the courts—and especially the Supreme Court—must stand up for Americans’ rights and the rule of law. And though there is a right-wing majority on the high court, the court should still be able to speak with one voice that the Constitution prevents the president from acting unconstitutionally. The key question to be answered is: Are the president’s actions constitutional and legal? The short answer is no.
1)The president cannot use the Alien Enemies Act to summarily deport people
2) The president cannot legally run for a third term
3) The president cannot legally punish law firms for their legal activities
4)The president cannot legally punish his political opponents
litigation and stripping of security clearance of two political appointees from President Trump’s first term
5)The president cannot legally punish private companies and public organizations for diversity programs
The president’s threats to cancel education funding due to ideological disputes contravene settled constitutional and legal principles. President Trump enjoys many powers under the Constitution, but the power to unilaterally, absent any due process, force states and institutions to comply with his shifting policy demands or lose federal funding is not one of them. Individuals, organizations, universities, and states themselves should be wary of bowing to the president’s demands because anticipatory obedience to an illegal order wreaks just as much havoc on the nation’s democratic system as the illegal orders themselves. Trump is a convicted felon, a criminal and a perp, documented sexual abuser and an owner of a company deemed fraudulent. Of course he will do criminal things. The trumpers up in here are blinded and ask stupid questions about what has he done unconstitutional and illegal. You will never get an unjaded response from them,as Its impossible to graft a new idea on a closed mind. Keep shouting though, its healthy and there is the MASTER POLITICIAN who has a grip on it all and every knee WILL BOW in the end! Nixon was so much near beer compared to everything democrats have gotten away with, like bribery of the Clintons by the Chinese Russian and other parties, its almost not worth noting,
When there are riots. It feels like the 1960s (to people who remember the 1960s). So it was in 2020. So it was in 1992. Is there anything more to it than that? The country has been "more divided than at any time" since the 1960s/1970s for quite a while now (some say since the Civil War), but it's a different kind of division.
In the 60s you had smallish radical fringes against mainstream America. Today, you still have that smallish fringe, but the main division has been something like 50-50 for some years. In the 60s there was fear of a Black uprising. Does anyone really see that on the horizon?
The abominable Schmemann notwithstanding, one can't let Biden off the hook for our current divisions and for the riots. Opening up the border was a major break with "norms," and that mess has to be cleaned up.
The spirit or ghost or aura of JFK might have unsettled things in the 60s, but not so much JFK himself. Truth be told, he wasn't much of a president and didn't achieve terribly much during his term. People who thought his era was Camelot or Paradise and wanted it back may have been an unsettling force though.
I was fascinated that George Romney was leading the 68 Republican field before NH primary. It shows you the difference between then and now. No internet then. If there had been, Romney wouldn't have been leading and probably wouldn't even entered the race.
George Romney was just like Mittens. A businessman, arrogant, and liberal on everything except taxes and business regulations. With same penchant for flip-flopping on important issues. With him Vietnam. With Mittens, illegal aliens and Amnesty.
Nixon put him in the cabinet but despised him. Romney was a big talker and grandstander. His favorite pet plan was forcibly intergrate Americans suburbs and small towns with a massive subsidy for poor blacks to move their. NO matter what the locals thought. He'd have loved the 20,000 Haitians being moved to Ohio. Nixon was happy when he left after the 72 election.
